I just told you Nigeria import ban list exist to prevent the flooding of their market with things they produce best It is always cheaper to import from China. It doesnt mean you shouldn't set up local production to create jobs. whiles you build fantasies on the theory that because it is cheaper to import from China, no one should produce for their local market. jln115: 2 Likes 1 Share |

jln115:Dont produce locally in SA to create jobs and see what those angry unemployed people will do to you and see if the market will still exist. 1 Like 1 Share |

Just30:Bro I have a honours in accounting and I'm busy with my CFA... Believe me when I say this... I know more about economics than you. Besides I wasn't debating what you are saying now at all.... . Infact some of what you are saying now is exactly what I said a Government must do to protect local producers.....here is my post from earlier : jln115: Also Trump didn't suddenly ban imports from China.... He spent years creating policies to empower local producers before this whole trade war begun. Where your mistake lies is thinking Nigeria is currently producing enough metals, machinery and textiles that exceeds demand when in reality it isn't because if it was then it wouldnt be importing as much of these products as it is now. Machinery, Textiles and Metals are Nigerias three single biggest imports........ That doesn't sound like a country that produces those things as well |

Just30:I agree you have to produce locally hence why some of our imports are heavily tarriffed Don't know why you are debating this topic |

jln115:Listen, I am not saying that South Africa doesn't have influence in SADC, what I am saying is that their are two prime way to spread influence, Harp power, such as Military and Soft power (culture, history, economy and diplomacy). Tanzania can use the later to influence SADC better than SA. And when it comes to the point SA and Tanzania are competing for influence(That would never happen) SADC countries will tend to lean on to which county is a better friend and how will they stand to benefit. And with Swahili, that has been Tanzania's push for a long while. SADC has no benefit of adopting Swahili so they could have just said no. 1 Like 1 Share |

just because we now produce more rice doesn't mean rice isn't still being imported. it's just that importers of rice through the ports no longer get cheap forex so they can make a killing locally. since they now source for their own forex it makes no business sense importing as much as they used to despite the fact that local demand for rice hasn't been met. with textiles access to forex has also been restricted https://nairametrics.com/2019/03/05/cbn-ban-forex-sale-to-textile-importers/ jln115: |

actually petroleum products petrol, diesel, kerosene etc account for a lion share of what gulps our imports bills. machinery obviously we have some way to go in that respect due to metals. unfortunately we had a steel plant in a place called ajaokuta that was supposed to address that problem jln115: |

Mzal3ndo:Let me simply respond to the bolded as I think it answers all the boxes. If what you say does by some very impossible chance comes true and SADC has to choose between South Africa and Tanzania... I can guarantee you every single country would choose to side with SA... Not because SA is a better friend but simply the economic impact alone of not having South Africa as a trading and investment partner would be monumental!! Even Tanzania would not dare let that happen since SA is one of its biggest investors and 4th largest importer 4 Likes |

chrisooblog:I didn't say you dont import rice anymore but because you are producing yourself and because it isn't as cheap to import it anymore importation has decrease drastically and you are now producing more than you are importing But what I am saying is textiles(or metal) are your 5th biggest import and thus any impediment to import textiles due to convid19 will negatively impact your markets, as you don't have enough local producers as yet. |
