davidnazee: 1. You said I was making Ife look like an empire or a mighty kingdom. Well, let me shock you. My name is NOT Margaret Plass. My name is NOT Erediauwa I. Neither is my name William Fagg. Nor am I a curator, authority or history expert at the British Museum. Take it up with these authotities and experts, who noted clearly that the kings of Benin paid homage to Ile Ife, and that they regard the Oonis of Ife as gods. I was clearly citing the experts and authorities only BTW, I would love to see you cite experts rather than vomit your personal imaginations. Thanks. 2. Yes, like I have noted above: "An emperor/Empress is a king/queen of a higher and elevated status. All emperors/empreses are kings/queens, but NOT all kings/queens are emperor/empresses. The Ooni of Ife is styled as His Imperial Majesty. The Oba of Benin is NOT." 3. I am still waiting for your evidence from any serious text (of course not from Nairaland or a random Facebook post) of where the Oba of Benin was ever styled as "His Imperial Majesty". Never! He dared not. 4. Furthermore, "official" means "one who holds or is invested with an office" [Merriam-Webster Dictionary]. No where does this definition say it must be a country's government. A royal styling becomes "official" as soon as the palace sanctions it. May be it's hightime you sued all your English teachers and request refunds. And as far as I know the Benin palace never uses "His Imperial Majesty" for the Oba of Benin. They dared not. The Ife palace on the other hand uses "His Imperial Majesty" exclusively. Benin dared not. 5. All along I had thought I was having an exchange with an Edo child who knows even the most basic stuffs of his language and history. It's a shame you don't know why Omo N'Oba N'Edo Erediauwa I admitted that the kings of Ife were known in Benin kingdom as "Oghene". 4 Likes 2 Shares |

kygo: Oshiomhole could not even destroy or move the fence of the Oba palace. They had to shift the road not to talk of dethroning the Oba. Except he wants to govern an empty land. Even the British colonial master had their fare share of the Benin and it’s Oba. That Kingdom are very loyal to the ruling family. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

johnmattew: yeye comment. all d so called delta & bayelsa people particularly ijaw, urhobo, ishekiri & some other heartless people of d so called Niger Delta are currently invading Benin land and converting same & renaming to theirs. Benin people are some of d weakest & coward people I have met. Ijaws took Gelegele from them Took Enkewan from them took nifor from them and about to collect Udo. Itshekiri is about to collect Ologbo community from Benins using the Iyasele of Warri .When you see weaponry of the Itshekiri, you will know Nigeria will one day fight ethnic fight that even Rwanda will be a joke. Benins are currently being decimated at Ologbo by the Itshekiri militant. Benin has been reduce to 7 local government but in reality it is only 2 local government Benin has. you will find most benins in Oredo & Egor . the remaining 5 is occupied by Ijaw, Urhobo, Itshekiri people. As I type, Ijaws are already kidnapping people using Ikpoba River and this is a river at d very center of Benin city. Very shameful to come from this part of the world. let me not talk about the influx of fulani bandits, northern beggars, terrorist from Mali, Sudan, Niger, etc. This is why I so much like the Igbo man for not selling their ancestors land to non Igbo residents. |

Because the Ooni was submissive to the colonial master. The Oba Ewuare was never submissive to their indirect ruling system. The Ooni was Vulnerable and an ass licker. The Oba knew that going to exile in Calabar after being betrayed was better than being submissive. Sewgon79: 1 Like 2 Shares |

But finally you know these kings don't deserve respect because they were still the ones conniving with the whites to sell their subjects into slavery. |

olakintanj: Well, no one is arguing that the governor of Edo is not the number 1 citizen of the state. The oba is not on the governor's payroll. Will you say the house of Assembly members are under the governor's payroll when they are paid their salaries? The oba of Benin (just like the house of Assembly members) have a certain amount he is being paid as guaranteed by the Constitution. The bottom line is that the oba of Benin is not one who needs a certificate from the governor to become oba. He is Oba by birth. And no governor can Change that 1 Like 1 Share |

johnwarax: Who told you, the history says that. The colonial respect OONI OF IFE. To the extent that the first time OONIRISA left his Palace when there are dispute about tradition and they try to solve it but they could not. The other oba told the British that it is only OONIRISA present that can solve the dispute. The British then has little knowledge of power of OONIRISA. They beg OONIRISA to help solve the issue, if I could recollect, OONIRISA told them if he is to come out of ife, every river he will cross, the British have to kill cow, the colonial buy 1000 cows and provide transportation to convey OONIRISA. Moreso, when OONIRISA left Palace, all the Kings in South Western left their Palace including Oba of Benin. Because it has never happened before for OONIRISA to leave ife. Go and ask or check Nigeria history and gazette. 2 Likes |

Just hearing the story for the first. But the Oba blatantly rejected all the offers from the colonial masters and no conditions where given. One thing I know is that the Benin kingdom fought colonialism Sewgon79: 2 Likes 1 Share |

Oritsewhandey:you are absolutely right.. That was on display when he visited the ooni... It was even quoted in the tribune thus: ``The Oba of Benin and his entourage soon arrived, in a convoy of no less than 50 vehicles, comprising jet black SUVs, saloon cars, buses, and the oba’s iconic white Rolls Royce in the midst. “This is more than a governor’s convoy,” one observer remarked.`` https://tribuneonlineng.com/when-oba-of-benin-visited-ooni-of-ife/ 1 Like |

TAO11: All this you say still doesn’t make Ife an imperial power or Ooni an imperial majesty.. Any king can style themselves Imperial majesty.. As for comparing Benin to Ife I won’t argue that with you because you already know Ife was never an empire or a force to reckon with. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Sewgon79:Oba Ewuare, during his visit to the ooni of ife, in his speech which was quoted in the tribune thus: “I want to say it gives me great pleasure to visit His Imperial Majesty today in countinuation of my nationwide thank you call to traditional rulers, and other eminent personalities that graced my coronation on October 20, 2016, which by the divine grace of God is also my birthday. This visit has long been planned but due traditional and other palace engagements in Benin, it is coming at this time. My post-coronation thank-you tour commenced with a visit last year to President Buhari and the Sultan of Sokoto. I thank God for making this visit possible. https://tribuneonlineng.com/when-oba-of-benin-visited-ooni-of-ife/ 1 Like |
