I saw a clip where Fashola said we are trying to prevent the spread of a Virus and not bacteria hence we don’t need hand sanitizers because it is used for bacteria. This I not only find unintelligent but a high level ignorance was displayed. He did not think about ways one can contract the very one we are faced with before making such shameful statement. But if I’m wrong and he’s right, I stand to be corrected. Cheers 2 Likes |

Fashola is 100% wrong. He is a lawyer. Don't listen to medical illiterates, listen to real experts or read medical and research literature. Virus are far more fragile than bacteria. Any solution(sanitizer or not) with 70% alcohol will destroy any kind of virus. Lower concentration sanitizers will also destroy viruses if used in sufficient quantities. 13 Likes 2 Shares |

He might be right but not 100% right. There are two main types of hand sanitizers: Alcohol-based and Alcohol-free. Once a sanitizer is Alcohol-based (containing at least 60% alcohol), it will be effective against virus not just bacteria and fungi alone I think it's important our people know this too. An alcohol-based sanitizer is the type needed at this period. 1 Like 1 Share |

According to the CDC, hand sanitizer is not as effective at killing germs as washing your hands with soap and water. The CDC says that washing your hands is a better tactic for removing certain viruses and bacteria, such as Cryptosporidium (causes diarrhea) and norovirus (stomach bugs). Nigerians and poor comprehension skills, he was right because sanitizers are not all that effective, hence his views that hand washing is far more effective than sanitizers, that was the context and the point he was trying to make, wash your hands instead of depending on sanitizers as if it's the magic bullet. Wash your dirty hands. 14 Likes |

mikezuruki: The CDC is the foremost authority and the best disease control institution in the world, they advised to wash your hands instead of relying on hand sanitizers that are not as effective as hand washing. CDC is in America, advanced country and they agreed with Fashola that hand washing is far better and more effective than hand sanitizers and the fact that hand sanitizers are everywhere doesn't mean they offer full protection like hand washing, the point that Fashola was trying to make that people misunderstood. I've already posted what they said about handwashing and sanitizers, read their conclusion before your next post. Fashola was right, sanitizers are antibacterial solutions. 6 Likes 1 Share

Alcohol based sanitizers may have effect on some viruses especially the ones that have lipid envelope. Alcohol dissolves the lipid coating thus significantly impairing the virus's virulence. The effectiveness, however, is a function of the concentration of alcohol and the duration of exposure. Coronavirus is an enveloped virus. In the light of this I wouldn't say Baba is totally wrong. If purely antibacterial or low alcohol concentrattion sanitizers is used the viral particle will not be destroyed. Washing with soap, as correctly pointed out, is safer, cheaper, easier and more effective. 6 Likes 1 Share |

NGpatriot:It doesn't matter what is written on the body. Many drugs are used for far more than what is written on their body even widely unrelated ailments e.g Aspirin Do you carry soap and water everywhere you go? How many organizations stock soap and waters in their gates? Who would assist you to use the soap and water in such case or will you throw away the soap and water after every use. The CDC didn't say you should not use hand sanitizers, Fashola did. I am hoping he has buckets of water and soaps at the entry of all ministry of works for staff to use if not he is an idiot who will endanger us all should people listen to his advice. Fashola is a lawyer who should stick to what he knows. 2 Likes |

Xisnin: 1. Sanitizers are antibacterial, not an antivirus, Fashola was 100% CORRECT and there's not a single sanitizer out here that says antivirus sanitizer because they are antibacterial regardless of what other things you use it for. 2. Regardless of access to soap and water or not, it doesn't change the fact that hand washing is far superior and more effective than hand sanitizers.. 3. Yes, hand sanitizers are provided as alternatives, but they are not effective, they give you nothing but a false sense of protection, this is why the CDC put out advisories to highlight the superior effect and effectiveness of handwashing over sanitizers. 4. Again, Fashola was 100% correct and the CDC agreed with him. 5. Fashola never said you should not use sanitizers, he only highlighted the fact that it's antibacterial, rightfully so, a perfect and correct statement. He also emphasized the importance and better effect of handwashing. 6. This is why my first post in this thread referenced poor comprehension on other people's part, they either did not watch the video or did but didn't comprehend. I use sanitizers, but with the understanding that I'm not 100% protected and still must be careful and vigilant until I'm able to do proper handwashing with soap and water. Instead of losing sleep over this issue, stick to what you believe in, stick to sanitizers and let other people stick to handwashing, it's your choice. Btw, I'm not a lawyer or a doctor, but I know a lot about this virus, about how to protect myself and what I need to do either per handwashing or sanitizer, this is common sense and you don't have to be a lawyer or doctor to know all that. 15 Likes 1 Share |

NGpatriot: Stick to what you know! Fashola is a medical illiterate just like you. Sanitizers are not only antibacterial but kill other microbes. As general advice for your health, just because something is written on the body(that is not how drugs are prescribed) it doesn't mean it is good for you. The information on packages are for ignorant laymen and not for experts and many sanitizers do not mention bacteria on their body(since that is what you are fixated on). Most that do mention germs which is a non-technical term encompassing virus, bacteria, fungi and other disease-causing agents. Do you even know what a virus is? When your basics are wrong all your listed points are wrong. This isn't politics where opinion reins. This is science. BTW, did they write on the body of the soap and water you use that it kills virus? Why would you use soap and water when it is not written on the body? 4 Likes 1 Share |
