TayserMahrii: My problem with this dude is rewriting history;deliberately downplaying the horrific crimes of his people. Like this! Also the abolishment of Slavery wasn't the main cause of the Great Trek, but did it play a role? Its difficult to say as the trek boers never took any slaves and their sovereign states were "free" states..... If the abolishment of slavery was a major reason don't you think the Boer states would've been "slave" states instead of "free" states? The truth is right from the beginning slavery, the capture of Blacks was part and parcel of settler culture. Within a few decades of thr landing of Jan Riebeek Khoisan were enslaved. "They objected that there was not enough grass for both their cattle and ours. 'Are we not right therefore to prevent you from getting any more cattle? For, if you get many cattle, you come and occupy our pasture with them, and then say the land is not wide enough for us both! Who then, with the greatest degree of justice should give way, the natural owners, or the foreign invader?'"Mind you, that's the pioneer settler himself talking! Anyway they kept slaves throughout their treks and republics referring to 'indentured servants,' captured kids kept after their Swazi,Pedi,Nguni parents were killed in battle. IIRC,they were called 'Inboekselings' also referred to as slaves and were treated as such-unpaid and mistreated. Orphan children of the native tribes were booked in strictly controlled by legal process, at appointed Boer families to look after them until they came of age.[17]:47 The administration was similar to the system of indentured workers, which was simply another form of slavery, with the exception that children so registered had to be released at age 16.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_African_Republic Btw,the Great Trek was sparked off when the Brits in Cape Colony banned slavery. There were also 30,000 African and Asian slaves owned by the settlers, and about 17,000 indigenous Khoisan. Relations between the settlers – especially the Boers – and the new administration quickly soured.[4] The British authorities were adamantly opposed to the Boers’ ownership of slaves and what was perceived as their unduly harsh treatment of the indigenous peoples.[4]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Trek In fact slavery was legally codified and black prisoners were often hired by Boers who paid the government a nominal almost like Chinese prison labour . You can imagine the conditions with no official oversight-many died from TB,whippings and maltreatment. The system died out only in the 80s: I can't find stats on the mortality rate. During the great depression in the 1930s, prison labour was made available to the agricultural sector at a very low cost. Farms such as the Glenroy sugar cane farm, situated near Dududu on the South Coast of Natal (now Kwazulu Natal province), had bought prisoners to work on the farm. The prison labourers were bought from Durban Central Prison, for 5 cents. Some of the prisoners were from townships surrounding Durban, such as Umlazi. Other prison labourers died on the farm and were buried there. They died from illnesses such as tuberculosis. The farm is now owned by Illovo sugar.https://www.sahistory.org.za/article/history-prison-labour-south-africa The more you read the more you wonder... Under apartheid, thousands of black prisoners, and those who had contravened the pass laws, were supplied to farmers as labour. Prisoners were often accommodated on farm outstations. Conditions on prison farms and mine compounds were regularly exploitative and harsh and employers were very not often held accountable for the treatment of prisoners. ...WHY THE ACTUAL FCVK DID THIS NIGGA EVEN BRING UP THIS TOPIC IN THE FIRST PLACE!? 1 Like

Stevoh18:it will surely impact negatively on the economy if it continues for like 6 months but with a young and vibrant population, it will bring about a positive change in a long run. Average Nigerians barely feel the impact of oil money, the level of misappropriation in the sector is alarming. Bad time for the Economy. 1 Like 1 Share |
