A civil society organisation, Rescue Nigerian Economy Project, has appealed to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu not to impose a curfew on the metropolis as part of measures to curtail the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Governor, during a live broadcast at the State House, Marina on Friday evening, had said that a curfew may be imposed on the state with the increasing cases of coronavirus.

He said: “We are moving to the direction of curfew, but there are indices and numbers we need to see, we haven’t seen that number yet to warrant a curfew".

The disease is not a respecter of anybody. It doesn’t look at class, gender or race, everybody is at risk, that is why we need to obey the rules and regulations set for ourselves.”

However, in a statement made available to INDEPENDENT on Saturday, the Executive Secretary of the group, Dennis Alamu-George said imposing curfew will only turn Lagos state into a ghost city which is not good for the image of the country.

It added that the measures put in place by the governor such as partial closures of markets, religious organizations, malls and public transportation systems such as the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) are a step in the right direction.

“The governor of Lagos has set a good example for his colleagues on how best to curtail the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. We also appreciate the palliative measures which he has announced for households in Lagos.

However as a group, we believe imposing a curfew in a cosmopolitan city like Lagos may be a step taken too far. It will turn the whole state into a ghost city which is not a good image for the country.

“While other steps taken by the governor in curbing the spread of the virus is welcome, we believe a curfew is unhelpful as it will also affect people with essential services from freely moving about.

“We are also appealing to Nigerians to stay indoor and obey all health regulations. Those showing symptoms of the disease should self isolate and call the emergency numbers made available by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Lagos State government for immediate evacuation and treatment,” the statement said.

maybe, but if no drastic step is taken, the disease may turn the state to a ghost town. Then government -if there will be any government by then- will regret why it didn't turn the state to a ghost town before the sickness.
Tough times call for tough measures

I think i agree with the group. One minute can save the life of patient. If there is a curfew, soldiers will mount roadblock questioning people's movement. supposing they delay a medical doctor who is rushing to a clinic to save a life for about 10 minutes Lagos is on lockdown already. No church, no market and most companies have closed shop. No need for a curfew
