Ibrahim Pantami Seeks Reduction In Call, Data Tariff by solagist(m): 3:38am On Apr 01, 2020
Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Ibrahim Pantami, has urged telecoms companies to subsidise the cost of calls and data to cushion the effect of the ramgpaging COVID-19 pandemic.

A British telecom firm, Vodafone had, in the wake of the pandemic, offered a 30-day free unlimited mobile data to half a million of its pay monthly customers.

The mobile network said it was doing so as part of its support measures during the coronavirus pandemic.

Customers considered “vulnerable” will be automatically upgraded, it said, while others can apply.

Pantami, on his official Twitter handle, urged telecoms companies to ensure they further subsidy or reduce calls and data for citizens in this criticla time.

The telecoms firms, however, said they have been supportimng the nation and first responders as they tackle the menace of COVID-19.

They, however, said they were not interested in making a showmanship of the gesture at this trying time.

Acting under the aegis of Association of Licesned telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ALTON), its Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, said though the times are hard, the telcos have been doing a lot to support the country during this trying times.

Adebayo said the industry is looking at various options as responsible and caring corporate citizens to support the government and the customers.

Yes ooo, Since enterprise like MTN did not drop 1 Billion. They should just open free data for Nigerians for now.

Even if it's free 5GB. It will help cry


And also DSTV and GOTV should reduce their price... undecided

Can these greedy telcos show us whet they have been doing to support this pandemic, despite raking in billions of $$ in profits over the years?
Apart from the useless Stay safe, Safety first , Safety for All and other unsolicited and ineffective banners on our mobile phones?

They’ll rather spend millions on endorsements for some wacky accidental celebrities than doing something that will have direct impacts on their numerous subscribers.

And yes Mike Adenuga donated #1.5b to the the government to fight the pandemic. However, we all know that government in this context is a committee of vultures that specializes in devouring what’s meant for the populace. so that can be categorized as a wasted effort, a badly thought out Idea or the usual audio donation.

I just don't understand why we can't just get something right in this country. Even if the government can't regulate the price of other things There's nothing stop them to control this foriegn own telecommunications companies.

It's not only about covid19 government just have to do something to this telecom companies that reaping Nigerians their hard earning money.

Mtn with their poor service delivery these days can't justify the irrationality behind the hike on their Data price.

Govt officials suddenly demanding private companies to provide "palliatives" for their customers. But the govt themselves who control the vast majority of our resources have provided zero palliatives in this period.

Bit must be to a considerate reduction agreed by both parties

It takes a lot to keep this infrastructures running and the loss and sabotage that comes with it is explosive.

The midline should be reached between operators and the government and should never be an imposed tariff.

The will never do that. Nigerian are too greedy. Instead they wld even look for ways to get more money out of people.

Just hours before the lock down prices of commodity had increased in Abuja. Imagine a bag of pure water that was 100 naira immediately increased to 150 naira.

Nigerian are really bad people. No wonder we have the kind of leaders we have.
