South Africa's state arms and technology company, Denel, will design and develop medical ventilators in partnership with other state-owned entities to help treat coronavirus patients.



Denel said in a statement on Sunday engineers from Denel Dynamics and Denel Aeronautics were already working round the clock on Project Sabela to produce the ventilators, without giving a target figure.



"We are still in the early stages of the project, but we are optimistic that this local initiative will help to alleviate the dire need for medical ventilators that are required in great numbers at both public and private hospitals,"



A task force has been formed consisting of experts from Denel, Armscor, which acquires defence material on behalf of the Department of Defence, power utility Eskom, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and other entities to investigate designs and produce a prototype of a local medical ventilator.



Du Toit said he was confident the team would soon make huge strides in producing the ventilators at a time of global shortages. South Africa has an estimated 6000 ventilators in public and private hospitals.



Denel, a cornerstone of South Africa's defence industry, is also considering other initiatives in which it could repurpose its current operations and technology to assist the national effort to tackle the health crisis.



This includes converting Casspir mine-protected vehicles into ambulances, the firm said.



South Africa has reported 1,585 coronavirus cases as of late Saturday, with nine deaths.

Same applies in TZ, tourist come for Kilimanjaro, national parks etc,they stay in superb hotels,but after doing all what they came for,they add up village tours,school visits,etc.

ABUJA – The ongoing attacks on Nigerian nationals in some parts of South Africa were a “criminal ingratitude” by South Africa to the role played by Nigeria in liberating the country, an analyst has said.

“Apartheid is one dark era in the history of South Africa that the country should be eternally grateful to Nigeria for her role in bringing the era to an end at the time it did,” said Nigerian analyst Jude Ndukwe.

Ndukwe said Nigeria was the first country to provide direct financial aid to the now-governing African National Congress from the 1960s, while in the 1970s, Nigeria supported the ANC and the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) with an annual subvention of $5 million to help them in the struggle.

Nigeria set up a programme to cater specifically for their educational needs and general welfare through the Southern Africa Relief Fund (SAFR) to which then-president General Olusegun Obasanjo contributed $3.7 million.

Ndukwe added that civil servants gave two percent of their income to the fund, then known as the “Mandela Tax”.

“Students joyfully skipped their lunch at school just to be able to contribute to the fund.”

Ndukwe said that in six months’ time, the fund had amassed $10.5 million sent to the South Africans. According to SAFR, 86 South African students were educated in Nigeria for free.

Ndukwe said it is estimated Nigeria spent well over $61 billion between 1960 and 1995 to help fight apartheid and bring about democracy in South Africa.

“Yet, when the South African icon Nelson Mandela died, it was the leaders of the western nations that had turned their backs on South Africa in their times of need that were given prominent roles and front seats, while Nigeria and other African countries were relegated to obscurity,” said Ndukwe.

He said if South Africa wanted to be “ungrateful” to Nigeria it should not kill Nigerians.

You're missing the point. People don't spend a lot of money just to come see samey hotels & highrise buildings either. They have them in Europe & elsewhere. In SA, at least, townships & villages are a trend with tourists. Township B & Bs are making a killing from tourism. So yes, they do want the cheap beer & everything that comes with it.
Maybe the countries you mentioned aren't offering enough or exploiting the opportunity, but it's there.
