Hi guys, this is for those of us who just migrated to Canada and couldn't get a job because of the pandemic or just stopped working just after we got a job. We don't qualify for E.I but we can get CERB. We qualify for CERB. I just applied successfully. No dulling. 8 Likes |

kpnick: Good to hear. How about someone who had not earned $5k in Canada (she obviously made as much prior to migrating) in the twelve months preceding the application but lost her job due to covid-19? Will she qualify to apply? |
Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant Part 2 by salford1: 6:37pm On Apr 07, 2020 |
LecturerIFE:I won't rely on Nairaland for such information. It might be a good idea to call for clarification. If to go by the criteria, the person would not qualify. Some may get the money without qualifying only for CRA to come after that person the next tax year. 5 Likes

salford1:Lots of people are going to pay back. The system is on automatic qualification, it expects you to apply only if you qualify. They will do the auditing later and people are going to be paying back. 2 Likes |

sweetrie:I kind of sense that as they want to get the money out ASAP. It's just like tax returns online, they quickly get out the payment and always go back to discreetly audit everyone. With CRA, back dated interest would also be added on top of the amount owing. It's better to first clarify by calling than to goof, then paying the penalty later on. 3 Likes |

salford1:Exactly. I got returns quickly, I reassessed and over 3 weeks I haven't heard from them. Spent 6hours trying to call and I didn't speak to anyone. They expect people to do the right thing and apply only if they qualify |

Be careful to avoid future claw-backs. The requirement clearly says you must have lost your job due to the current situation and earned min $5k. It is possible it is approved as they are most likely trying to get it out to people urgently, but have it in your mind that you may have to repay it in the future and prepare yourself. I don't know for sure, just saying to have it at the back of your mind just in case. For your first CERB application: You have stopped or will stop working due to reasons related to COVID-19 For at least 14 days in a row for the period you are applying for, you will not receive: employment income self-employment income provincial or federal benefits related to maternity or paternity leave You have not quit your job voluntarily You did not apply for, nor receive, CERB or EI benefits from Service Canada for the same eligibility period You earned a minimum of $5,000 income in the last 12 months or in 2019 from one or more of the following sources: employment income self-employment income provincial or federal benefits related to maternity or paternity leave https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/benefits/apply-for-cerb-with-cra.html LecturerIFE: 1 Like 1 Share |

sweetrie:They are busy right now due to the demands of Covid. They would surely get back to you. My wife has been through reassessment twice. one was done pretty fast i.e in about 3 weeks, the other took 6 months, and all these were before Covid. |

ttmacoy:The 5k criteria is giving a lot of people concern especially, those in the gig economy. I believe the government is planning some different type of benefit system for them this week or next. |

Ok, it makes sense. Same as in the US, the package was passed in a rush so it's understandable that it will not be perfect hence the need to make necessary updates for the people who are left out. I think the guy should apply given his situation as the money will help till he gets a job but just prepare to pay back unless they pass an amendment to exclude the $5k. salford1: |

salford1:The 5K criterion isn't an issue as they said the money mustn't have been earned in Canada.. My major issue is that for a new immigrant who hadn't gotten a job before Covid 19, how will you say your income was impacted by Covid 19? when you were not in employment prior to that.. This is the reason I haven't applied.. Because the CERB is for those whose income have been impacted by COVID 19.. If I can get clarification to the above, then I may just apply.. Me sef need the money 1 Like 1 Share

Greetings everyone and I hope you and your families are staying safe during this period. Please I'll love to have your suggestions regarding my family's plan on migrating to Canada. My wife is going to be the primary applicant, but we are both Sales Associate in Dubai, (NOC 6421 C) so we can't go through Express Entry. Can you advise which PNP we can consider that does not require job offer. Also, regarding POF, I have majority of the money in my account, do I need to move the money into her account now and we wait 6months before starting the application. Thanks |

Influential101: Maybe an applicant could say Covid affected employment in former country of residence since the $5k criteria is allowed to be earned outside Canada? It also says you must have not quit your job voluntarily. They would be checking ROE for that (those in CA). Those under the CERB affected by Covid related job loss, after 4months would automatically be transfered to EI payments if they haven't being called back by their employers or still out of jobs. CRA and their wahala dey sometimes turn head. That's why it is better to call and speak to someone, or may be apply now and call later. Worst case scenario, the money would be classified as tax owing with interest in the next tax year, sort of a loan with interest. It might help take care of some bills till the economy stabilizes. 1 Like |

Influential101: The benefit is for workers. The way I see it, I am a worker by even their definition, I came in as a Federal Skilled Worker. Covid 19 has hindered my chances of getting employed. I think they have this in mind hence they included the clause of earnings outside canada. I think they just want to make sure at least someone was working ( Canada or abroad) 4 Likes 1 Share |

ttmacoy: It was out of abundance of caution that I asked my question. She easily meets the other requirements, and if income made prior to migrating to Canada is considered (she did make as much as $5k in 2019), then she's qualified to apply. But I get your drift.. one can't be too careful. Thank you |
