Re: Please, Who Can Solve This Puzzle? by akintun: 8:12am On Jul 30, 2011
The missing part is adding 1naia to the liability to give 99 naira. The 1 is meant to be added to the 97 naira shirt to give a 98 naira asset. The asset and liability would be 98 naira. Below is an analysis of the asset and liability flow.

Asset liability

Shirt - 97
cash - 3
Total - 100 loan - 100
repamt - 2 repayment - 2
total - 98 total 98

man the remaining one Naira is with you so stop looking for it.
Re: Please, Who Can Solve This Puzzle? by shadrach77: 11:46am On Jul 30, 2011
Guys i figured out another way to solve the puzzle. You see, the "missing" 1 naira is actually part of the 97 naira he used to buy the shirt. How do i know this? 97 divided by 2 = 48.5. If he returns the shirt, and gets a full refund and decides to give his parents the refund, it means he would be giving them 48.5 naira each. Now if he now gives each parent, 1 naira each from the 3 naira he is has left with him, it means each parent will have 49.5 naira each. Now 49.5 multiplied by 2 = 99. And if we now add the 1 naira which he still has with him to the this amount, it makes 100. End of story! grin grin cheesy cheesy

Here is it worked out mathematically:
97 divided by 2 = 48.5
48.5 x 2 = 97
48.5 + 1 = 49.5
49.5 x 2 = 99
99 + 1 = 100

Wrong sum.

Money borrowed= N100
Money paid back= N2
Debit Balance =-N98
Credit Balance =N1
-£98+£1 =-N97

The answer to the sum is -N97 not N99

Therefore, we should be looking for N3 not N1

And i think everyone already knows where the N3 is hidden

Boss Ttdiamonds:

Guys, your answers are all wrong, You're just adding up the numbers from the beginin' , But the real case here is that he borrowed 100 naira, bought the shirt for 97 naira, gave both parents 1 naira each and now he's in debt of 1 naira cause the money dont add up to 100 again,

i.e #100 = intial debt and price of shirt
shirt bought for #97, ( 100 - 97 ) =3
now he has 3 naira with him

suppose he gives both mom and dad #1 each that means he'll be 49 naira indebted to both his mom and dad
49 + 49 = 98 + 1 = 99,
He's askin' for the missing #1

but what ya'll doin' is addin' up 97 + 3 which is not possible since he has returned #1 to each of his parents

the deal now is that he has #1 missing help him find the #1, Cant ya'll do math,

The sum is invalid. There is no missing naira because Minus 98 naira plus 1 naira equals to minus 97 naira not 99 naira.

Wrong sum.

Money borrowed= N100
Money paid back= N2
Debit Balance =-N98
Credit Balance =N1
-£98+£1 =-N97

The answer to the sum is -N97 not N99

Therefore, we should be looking for N3 not N1

And i think everyone already knows where the N3 is hidden

Dad = 50
Mom = 50
Total = 100

Shirt = 97
Change = 3

100 = Change + Shirt

Then Later
Mom = 1
Dad = 1
Change = 1

So

100 = Mom + Dad + Change + Shirt.

But to go back to when you had 0
Mom would be -49, Dad would also be -49, Change would be 1 and Shirt would be 97

So

0 = Mom  + Dad + Change + Shirt.

In any case you have to take the shirt into consideration.

100-97=3 . 3-2=1. Which means you are oweing both ur parent N98 after you return N1 each to them and you are having extra N1. by paying N1 out the money you owe it will remain N97 which is the price of the shirt so therefore no NAIRA IS LOST.100-97=3 . 3-2=1. Which means you are oweing both ur parent N98 after you return N1 each to them and you are having extra N1. by paying N1 out the money you owe it will remain N97 which is the price of the shirt so therefore no NAIRA IS LOST.

Seriously? If the OP allows you? Why do you need the OP's permission when so many people have already solved it. There is no missing N1.

pThree men are travelling and get tired, so they decide to spend the night at a nearby inn. When they go to the front desk, the innkeeper charges them $30, ($10 each), and the three men go into their rooms and go to sleep. Then the innkeeper realizes that he was only supposed to charge the men $25 total, so he gives $5 to the bellboy to give to the men. But on the way to the men's rooms, the bellboy thinks to himself, "Hey, I've been so good, I deserve some money." So he keeps $2 and gives the remaining $3 to the men. Because they each get $1 back, they paid $9 instead of $10 each. But 3 x 9 = 27. But $30 - the taken $2 = $28. Where is the missing dollar?

Re: Please, Who Can Solve This Puzzle? by hope2007(f): 10:32pm On Jul 31, 2011
By paying N97 for the shirt it means each parent makes a contribution of N48.5. When you add the N1 given to them they each have N49.5.Then the remaining N1 with you if shared into two gives 50k each and when added to the N49.5 it give N50 and then you will find no money is missing. Simple

Mom Dad
N48.5 (Moms contribution to shirt) N48.5 (dads contribution to shirt)
+ 1.0 (N1 you returned to mom) +1.0 (N1 you returned to dad)
+ .5 +.5 ( N1 with you is shared between mom and dad)
------------ -----------
N50.00 N50.00

Therefore 48.5+48.5=97+1+1+.5+.5= N100
No money is missing

Re: Please, Who Can Solve This Puzzle? by Nobody: 10:15pm On Aug 19, 2012
This is a proof that most people in Nairaland are dummies: Another reason why I hate arguing with NLs because they cannot comprehend simple logic. It's unfortunate that no one here can invalidate the calculation or contradiction the OP made.

Solution:
The OP basically twisted your brain. You cannot solve the puzzle following or analyzing his own calculation because it's invalid.

Total sum borrowed(Credit) = N 100
Amount paid back = N 2

From basic finance:
Credit(Total credit in hand) = Remaining borrowed money (N 98)

N 97 (Dress) + N 1 (In hand) = N 98

I hope this explanation is enough.

27naira:

The question is faulted.
your exposure was 100; you paid 2 and got 98 left; 97 was used to pay for the shirt and you have 1 let.
Now, if you pay 2 and got 98 left, you can as well give them the 1 naira balance, the 97 credit balance is the cost of the okirika shirt.
I think the trick you applied here was to direct our minds to 98 and 1 but not on the whole transaction.

meanwhile give up buying okirika shirts, it makes you think too much.  grin
Wicked answer
