Your last sentence says a lot.
The vacancy for residency training in Nigeria is becoming something else.
Not passing the fellowship exams is also dependent on the examiners. Some of the
old examiners tend to look at medical exams with the analogue knowledge they used during their days. For one to have undergone training for 6 years in an accredited institution, signed and presented for an exam by the institution shows he/she has the adequate knowledge in that speciality. There is no need to expect one to turn into a professor during residency training before passing the exam.
The examiners should be lenient and focus their examination more on practical issues rather than theoretical. Because these days anybody can use Google for theory.
I don't know what you mean by lenient
You may wish to Google pass rates for international postgraduate medical examinations. Not everyone passes
Every one cannot become a Consultant. The idea that just by undergoing training means one has what it takes is puzzling.
Does every ICAN Candidate pass?
Does every undergraduate graduate?
Anyone can use Google for theory? I am scratching my head and don't know what to say to that one

Social distancing maintained even in protest.....lol.
Fact is this letter is unnecessary. My question is simple, do you guys have enough manpower to run the hospital?
Rather than send individual letter, a memo could have been appropriate informing them of the need to reapply......whilst still engaging them.
Most of these guys are almost set to migrate to middle east, Europe and Canada. We should stop making them feel unloved here!

You do not understand the issues fully and should try to do that
If a state government offers an NYSC doctor a place it is for 12 months.

If the NYSC decides that the doctor should repeat the year for whatever reason. The state is not obliged to offer him a spot.
States have budgets
If they budget for 10 doctors each year that means the next set will sacrifice a slot for the repeating doctor.

The doctors are not sacked their time is up, They are post graduate trainees who did not pass their exams within the allocated time.
Normally they should make way for others
If you eat you must defecate. If not there will be problems. You cannot continue eating and not do the other one. Every pregnancy has an expiry date
In this era of of Coronavirus lockdown today I queued outside a shop. It was 1 in 1 out only 4 people in at any time.

Will they say they are not aware this is coming their way. It was a 6 years contract and it is over.

It can never be 6 years. That is not what the Residency Training Act stipulates. The hospital violated the provisions of the Act

We dey find doctors eh... h!

Why sack the few available ones that we have?
This is not the time for administrative rascality. Whatever the issues are should be looked into after COVID-19 is over.

Who are these people in positions of authority? Do they really think at all?
No , they don't think, because the so called leaders has a dead brain.

The 30 doctors allegedly sacked by the management of Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi displayed their sack letters earlier today Wednesday, as they called on the state Governor, Dr Samuel Ortom to intervene.

In a press briefing with newsmen, the President of the Association of Resident Doctors in the institution said about 32 of their members were sacked by the management. According
to her, the sack was not in accordance with the laws regulating Residency Training in Nigeria.

She dispelled the statement of the hospital management who said they had not domesticated the Residency Training law in the hospital, hence were took their actions based on the hospital policy.

The President said, "The Medical Residency Training Act (MRTA) was passed by the national assembly in 2017. A year later, it was signed into law by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari.

"The Act regulates Residency Training in institutions anywhere in Nigeria and Benue State University Teaching Hospital is in Nigeria and ought to abide by the law".

She called on the Benue State Governor, Dr Samuel Ortom to intervene in order to avert crisis in the health sector of the state.

"We are, again, appealing to the amiable Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Dr Samuel Ortom and all other well-meaning sons and daughters of Benue State to prevail on the management of Benue State University Teaching Hospital to obey the law, in order to avert a crisis in the health sector of the state."

Efforts to get access to the Chief Medical Director, Prof Terrumun Swende proved abortive. A source confirmed that he was in a closed meeting with the Governor over the matter and could not respond to calls and messages.

I don't mean to graduate anyhow. Maybe I didn't use the right vocabulary. But I have heard people that passed all the stages in the final level exam towards becoming a specialist, only for them to be failed based on simple things such as not remembering a 'term' during oral examination. Examiners vary. And trust me, some will pass this kind of candidates and simply remind them the word, while some old professors will ask such candidate to come back next time. This is an example where I say Google can help in a real life situation. And in advanced countries they use their computer to search for information (may not be Google, can be a book or protocol of the hospital). Note oral examinations are subjective and some candidates can be there and it will simply be a gist with the examiner.

There are all these medical exams over 500 doctors will write, at the end only 30 will pass. And you feel it is normal? Or they are making money for the college?

Being lenient doesn't mean passing every TDH.
Anyone that passes all stages but fails at the oral part on is not a dunce.

Nairalanders are funny o, u guys are here saying what the doctors wanted u to say because I don't know wharisgoinon. The said resident doctors are looking for who will pity them.. In their appointment letter, it was stated six years.. And six years have reached.. Now why all the drama.. New resident doctors will be employed to also learn..

Na only them wan learn? .. They should rather start applying for a permanent job... This is when they have finally become doctors.. They were still schooling.. They have graduated.. They have to go home for other doctors to come and also learn

Instead of applying for a Job, they want do residency for ever.. It's not done that way any where in the world

They were terminated since December, it's now they are coming out to find who will pity them and bad mouth the hospital management because it's Corona virus period.. Shame

You guys should know that other new set of resident doctors will replace them..

Generally, doctors are selfish people... Shame again.

Has anyone read the content of the letter. That's not a sack letter... Their training is supposed to end within 6years and they were given option to reapply within 2 weeks.

It's very incensitive of the CMD to do this at this time that you need all hands on deck. But they should stop parading it as Sack letter and stop creating misleading drama.

This one's na dull doctors that can't pass their training exams. Those failures can apply for extension or extra year if they so wish.

Residency training has a duration that must be followed. Fresh brilliant doctors should be admitted into the program while these dull ones are flushed out. They can go and practice as GP.

Emigration loading. I won't be surprised if half of them are working in the U.K, Canada or the USA in 5 years' time. I see no reason why a doctor should stay here when he can easily earn 10 times more working in these countries.
