salford1:I was about to say the exact thing, applying is easy but they audit these things and if you are found wanting, you will pay back with interest. It’s best to know your stand before applying. 1 Like |

Influential101: You see, my confusion actually stems from the bolded part in your screenshot - "The income does not have to be earned in Canada, but you need to reside in Canada". Not sure if that is speaking to general residency requirement or one is expected to have been residing in Canada while earning the income (like rental income and dividend from one's home country). Maybe I am the one overthinking this 4 Likes |

LecturerIFE: The tenses look plain to me sha. It does not need to have been earned in canada (past tense) You need to reside in canada (present tense) They did not say 'you need to have been residing in canada' (past tense). Therefore so long as you are residing in canada, 5k earned no matter where is good to go. An interesting aspect is this: You are not eligible for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit if you quit your job voluntarily. And then there's this aspect: It is expected that you will return to work when you are finished collecting maternity/parental or other special benefits under the Employment Insurance Program. If work is not available as a result of reasons related to COVID-19 upon conclusion of your maternity/parental leave, you may be eligible to apply for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, provided you meet the eligibility requirements. 2 Likes |

19CannyMum:Someone on my group posted this... "I just got off the phone with cra, and the rep said the clause to this is that even though you earned the 5k outside of Canada , but you must be a resident at the time of earning it outside the country" The matter is somehow 1 Like |

sweetrie:So this basically means PRs or Canadians working outside the country, and returning back home. E.g. Canadian residents arriving from the US and other parts of the world. It seems the resident requirements refers to general residency. However, in my opinion, anyone that actually needs the money can still apply, worst case scenario is that the person may be owing the government the amount collected plus interest/penalty when he or she files 2020 tax returns. |

LecturerIFE:General residency requirement would cover the bolded too, but it's just my opinion. |

sweetrie:The CRA rep that processed mine asked me for the date I migrated to Canada, after which he asked me if I earned 5000 last year and told me it doesn't have to be in Canada. I am sure if there was an issue with me migrating to Canada this year, he would have told me. Besides, the application was successful and I have already been paid the benefit 7 Likes 1 Share |
