What Is Fueling The Rise Of Atheism? by Psalms5522: 5:04pm On Apr 09, 2020 |
Africa has for centuries been the home of a people who believe in a God (monotheism) or plurality of Gods. But in recent years there is a movement that is growing at astronomical rate it is called atheism. A lot of friends here on nairaland Identify as atheist and a lot more are simpertizers who might not want to Identify with the atheist due to the stigma attached. There is still the religious subset of people (Christians, Muslims, traditionalists etc) who will do anything to stop this rise in atheism. So what is atheism? And what is fueling it's rise in Africa. The definition of the term atheism on the surface is a lack of belief in a God or God's. But to know more about what it means let's ask atheist. According to the website atheists.org it says “atheism is not a disbelief in God or Gods or a denial of Gods; it is a lack of belief in Gods”. The above definition seems confusing even to me at first, but let me illustrate it this way. A young man who has a father that doesn't care if he exist or not, a father who is alive but it's as if he is not, can use the words “I don't have a father “ that doesn't mean he denies the existence of his father but he doesn't believe in his role as father. Although there are some atheist who are far right that holds on to the denial of God's existence altogether. I know atheist in the house are relating to what I am saying (though am 100% theist, I believe in God) Now to my theist friends (that is those who believe in God or gods) I understand your concern about the rise of atheism but what is fueling this movement. According to Michael J. Buckley a theology professor : “ The Churches were the soil for atheism… the western conscience found itself deeply scandalized and disgusted by confessional religions” how Ironic, religion is the fertilizer for atheism how? The crimes people have committed in the name of a divine being is enough to drive one away from the divine one. Consider witch hunting small children in southern Nigeria at the order of a so called representative of God , the massacre of people in the north by bokoharam, the ritual killings and other barbaric custom of the African traditional religions. Look at the role religious leaders play in this current crisis we have instead of sensitizing their followers about the dangers of Corona virus, they are on a campaign of disinformation and outright lies so as to keep their grip on their members. Another factor fueling the rise of atheism is the desire to be accountable to no one, Karl Max whose writings would influence so many atheist once said : “ I want to increase the minds freedom from religion “. A disbelief in a divine being means anyone can set his or her own standards as to what is acceptable or not without fear of offending an omniscient divine one who can at his own whim and caprice condemn me to so great beyond of suffering. To these atheist it lifts a heavy weight off their shoulders. The third cause of this rise is the band wagon effect. A sizable number of people who identify as atheist do so because they think it's the cool thing to do, others feel it makes you look or feel intelligent. “This group sha una funny” From my research these are some things I found. But there are still some questions that beg for answers. Will the world be better of without religion? Can humans exist without religion? Is religion really the problem or are we missing the human factor? Next article loading… Reference atheists.org en.m.wikipedea.org/irreligion_in_africa wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/1994880 |

...then there are atheists like me. We do not see any permissible reasons, proofs, evidence, significance or justification for anyone to believe in gods... at least, there are no proofs that gods have impacted on anything, aside from those who just want to believe or pretend to believe so, to either feel safe from fear of the phenoma of life/death or to exploit gullible people. 9 Likes |

Psalms5522: Biko, how did you come up with this conclusion? Or did you just think of it while making your writeup? I don't think your statement is correct. If one becomes an atheist, it's simply because he /she has come to an agreement or conclusion that there is no God. Saying most Atheists became Atheists just to look cool or sound intelligent is totally off point and in no way related to Atheism. 10 Likes |

Ignorance of Christians which arises from pre -conceived man made doctrines. For instance, man made doctrines which dominated among Christians that the earth was flat in shape was proven wrong, as a result many Christians became atheists. Other baseless man made doctrines like rapture, end time, Antichrist, Armageddon, mark of the beast or 666 etc which promote fear among Christians and impair their minds to be productively engaged in this world are the major causes of the rise of atheism this modern day. The question is, when will Christians start getting it right? 16 Likes |

And many people are driven to atheism when the gods presented to them as God Almighty appear less intelligent, less tolerant, less disciplined, more stupid, more powerless etc than the humans themselves. For example, the foolishness of Jehovah and Allah as written in their books will make any sane person want to quit religion. I opened a thread to discuss how PRESENTING JEHOVAH AS GOD ALMIGHTY has driven many Christians to atheism. https://www.nairaland.com/5766306/how-presenting-jehovah-god-driven 9 Likes 1 Share |

Psalms5522:certainly, we are ignoring the human factor. We know the human factor exist, but because that inherent nature of Christians to give humans the undue reverence where it is not warranted by upholding their doctrines even when these doctrines are not scriptural, we tend to always see these false doctrines when we read scriptures and that is very dangerous to Christianity. I can tell you that there are scriptures that seems to indicate that the earth is flat, but because of human factor(assuming it wasn't proven otherwise) people will believe what i have said that the earth is flat because that is what i saw in the scripture. But unknown to them i am having a very wrong conception of that scripture. This is how a lot of doctrines we believe today in Christianity was developed many years ago. Examples of these kinda doctrines are rapture, end time, mark of the beast, end of the world. Now, you see the effect of this kind of beliefs to a pastor like pastor Chris oyakhilome? The belief of these fictious doctrines have made him look like a very confused person today going by his recent opinion about 5G technology and covid-19 3 Likes 1 Share |

Many bother their minds with the existence of a being, personal or impersonal, called God even when we do not understand what God is, or the nature of existence itself. It's more about knowing oneself, the Yoruba spirituality call it 'Ori', and emphatically express that the self is an arch divinity, and should be acknowledged. That acknowledgement makes one GOD. Know thy self and you will become a God. I am a God, a concious living divinity, eternal and exist. I choose to identify myself as a spiritual atheist. A spiritual atheist, unlike traditional atheist, tends to redefine God as a form of natural energies, and discard all form of superficial attachment by religious establishment. Permit me to bring it down a little. Everyone would think Sango is a fiery man breathing fire. I see Sango as a personification of electrical energy. Lady Justice is a representation of Law/order. Atheist might lock out idea of worshipping Lady Justice, and even deny it exist in reality. But she does...as legality. Would atheist deny existence of Lady justice after knowing there is law in the society? Therefore, instead of debating the existence of God, understanding the nature of existence and God is vital. What exist? What is God? 4 Likes |

spartan117:there is no where rapture was mentioned in the bible. yes, this one is scriptural. But it doesn't mean the end of the world. Now, look at this fascinating revelation. Revelation 21:24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the KINGS OF THE EARTH do bring their glory and honour into it. One may ask, how does the king of the earth do bring their glory into God's kingdom? Do they climb ladder to the clouds in access to God's kingdom? These are questions those who claim there will be rapture and end of this world need to answer Antichrist is anyone denying Christ by kicking against Christ and Christianity. For instance, people who persecute early Christians in the bible were antichrists. 1 John 2:22 So there is nothing new about Antichrist, they are just mere humans like me and you. |

According to God's word, ATHEISM will soon overthrow all the religions on planet earth excluding just one, and that's the one and only group of worshipers of the TRUE God! The time is short now! I've been making this known to many atheists on Nairaland, telling them that their group will soon take over the world power and declare war on religion! That time is now coming faster even than i expected! All religionists should be prepared for the worst, because this seemingly permissive ATHEISTS will come out like locusts against religion, it will remain only one group of worshipers, it's when they try to attack this one and only TRUE Christians that God will act to destroy all of them including those who failed to take their stand with God! 2 Likes |

paxonel:That is why there is a need for one to ask questions and study the Bible to see if what was presented as Scriptural is really Scriptural. But you see a popular adage that says if you want to hid something from man put it in a book some times applies to us (me included) we don't read we don't meditate on what we read we just look for already made explanations. 1 Like |

paxonel:Concerning rapture what's your understanding of this scripture? 1 Thessalonians 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Concerning the anti Christ this scripture seems to depict that the anti Christ is a spirit that gains expression through men. Don't you think? 1 John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. |
Re: What Is Fueling The Rise Of Atheism? by Nobody: 4:02pm On Apr 10, 2020 |
paxonel: To fully grasp the meaning of AntiChrist, you need to know Who is Christ? What was his mission? Who are his followers? How are they operating? That's when you can easily recognize the AntiChrist! Because the Bible is spiritual and you need God's holy spirit to perfectly grasp the Bible's message! The AntiChrist began amongst the first century Christians, gradually Satan started sowing his own evil seeds amongst them {Matthew 13:24-30} but they can't progress amongst the first century Christians because the Apostles were still very much around! 1John 2:18-19 So they left the gathering of TRUE Christians to form alliance with the Roman authority so after Constantine has given them power, they turned against the rest of TRUE Christians who were trying to keep up with the teachings of Jesus' Apostles, the pressure was so intense that all those who knew the way Christianity was established were silenced. That was how the seeds of Satan formed a religion that bears the name of Jesus but with a totally contrary mission. The name of the AntiChrist is Roman Catholic Church! Everything that Jesus taught was turned away and replaced with Pagan Roman philosophies and festivities! 1 Like |

I never believed atheism was even an option until I started studying religion rather than blindly believing what men in fancy clothes told me. Through many years of researching science, history, the origins of religions currently practised and contrasting them with what religious texts and so called intercessors of the divine have claimed I came to the conclusion that all religions are man made constructs designed not only to give answers for what people then did not understand but exert control over others. Religion does not require proof, solid evidence, or logic just belief and obedience. One religion can claim to be true but that does not make it so. With the Internet we can properly research these things for ourselves rather than asking our equally in the dark parents, peers or religious leaders with a vested interest in growing the influence of their religion. Doing either of the above will give biased answers or even result in serious personal harm as religious people hate having their beliefs questioned. 8 Likes 3 Shares |

spartan117:read 1 Corinthians 15:35-58 for the full explanation of what Paul was trying to say in this scripture. He was simply explaining resurrection of the dead, not rapture. Paul used a lot of figurative languages here but the interpretation of these figurative languages point to resurrection of the dead, not rapture. You see, that's why i said in the first place that there are scriptures in the old testament that seems to indicate that the earth is flat. That is how 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 seems to indicate that it is explaining rapture. For many years i used to think it was explaining rapture until i read through 1 Corinthians 15:35-58 and saw that it was actually explaining resurrection of the dead, not rapture. Infact, 1 Corinthians 15:55 concluded by saying O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? To let you know that the key aspect here is resurrection of the dead. So, the question is where is the rapture thing coming from? Obviously, from misconception of the scripture perhaps by the ancient catholic church who propagated the rapture doctrine that we keep believing till today. anyhow you want to see it. If you like see it that they were controlled by spirit to deny Christ, the truth is they are mere humans like me and you denying that Jesus is the Christ and that's nothing. And for us who believed that Jesus is the Christ, we were made to believe so by a spirit in us known as the holy spirit. |

Psalms5522:Exactly! The adage is very true. Have you ever been in a situation where you read a course in preparation for an exam, you read very well and you are convinced that you read the material to the last, but at end you still fail the course? It happened to me in one of those courses like that. you will think it is the lecturer that deliberately failed you But you see, I remember when i was reading the same course again as carry over, i soon discover that i was misinterpreting a lot of things thinking i was reading 1 Like |
