9jaRealist:

Obviously, the more people you test the more likely to turn up positive cases...
It’s been that way across the world, no reason to think it would be different with Nigeria.

The limited being made though is...
If you are testing more people but the RATE (not number) of positives is lower, that’s a good thing.
>

That is the point. Now see what I found:

The approach recommended is Test, Test, Test

Here are the test performances of a few countries as at 10th April:

US - 2,500,000
Russia - 1,010,000
Germany - 1,317,000
France - 330,000
Spain - 355,000
Nigeria - 5,000
Italy - 807,000
Brazil - 54,000
Vietnam - 118,000
UK - 282,000
S.Korea - 500,000
Australia - 338,000
UAE - 593,000
Canada - 348,000
Israel - 120,000
Turkey - 250,000
Belgium - 84,000
Switzerland - 171,000
Venezuela - 217,000

Now compare Nigeria 5,000 tests against reported contacts of over 10,000 and a population of 200m and see the percentage in relation to other countries above.

Are we doing enough tests? Even Niger Republic has done close to 5,000 tests!

They both started with fewer deaths. People in America called it a mild version of the flu. Italians simply ignored social distancing advice. We are lucky not to have had a bigger number of infected travellers coming into the country.

Nope. We all started about the same time. Today they are where they are while we are where we are.

Had the Coronavirus been able to hit us it is currently hitting them, by now, we would all have been dead.

The best precaution to take (and which should have been taken from the onset) is to prevent foreigners and returnee Nigerians from entering the country.

Thank you. So, imagine China that has tested on their people and with volunteers already lined up, bringing resources and logistics to Nigeria just because.

The Chinese medics that arrived are only treating CCECC staff, and not the general population....
However, since they also brought along donated ventilators and other equipment for Nigeria, they will also help with operational training.

That’s the entire extent of their mission in Nigeria.

Which company is currently ruining the vaccine trails in US? it's Melinda and Bill gate foundation
and Australia are still on chloroquine trial on animals.

so china is on their own trial here, take it or leave it. grin

stay safe.
China has supposedly tested their vaccine on 108 people in their country and more people are volunteering according to 9jaRealist. So what exactly is your issue with human trials here?

What matters is the number of deaths.

Thousand may test positive to the "Nigerian-used" version of the Coronavirus. But they will all(virtually all) surely overcome it with little or no treatment. They may not even show symptoms... embarassed

Does anyone know if they have started testing people with symptoms who have no travel history and no direct connection to a confirmed case?

A very good question, Seun.

That's what the authorities should be doing now no matter how unpleasant the results could be. This virus obviously has spiraled beyond NCDC's testing scope.

We need to test as many Nigerians as possible, not just lock people in their homes.

Facts are coming that almost all deaths are now reported to be of COVID-19 in Italy & figures deliberately hicked in US even if its of cancer or heart attack. I hope we have not imported that also.

We did not start the same time. The first confirmed cases in both the US and Italy were in January. Africa in general is the last to be hit by the virus. I suspect the government delayed shutting the border because some of them and their family members were outside the country.

I am still baffled as to the point you are struggling to make...

My point is that if Nigeria had been (eg) testing 100 new persons daily and the number of new positive cases were in the 10-20 range, if when it starts testing (eg) 200-300 persons daily and the number of new positives remains in the 10-20 (or even goes up to 15-25-30 range), then the RATE of new cases (as determined by the PERCENTAGE of positives) would have actually slowed - and that’s a good thing.

The point should be succinct and CLEAR enough. No need to drag irrelevant comparisons into that limited point.

Yes, but unless testing is intensified, these ones can spread it to the vulnerable ones. That is the general concern. They had better been tested, isolated and treated.

Nigeria's record so far evidently shows that we seem to have a natural handle around this virus, but there are many in our population who are quite vulnerable.

Nope. They all registered their first cases in February - same with us.

Even then, what's the difference between January and February to warrant a comparison of far over 10,000 deaths with 7 deaths.

Come on, this is just common sense.

It is important we start using the resources available for covid19 to carryout more test on people to curb further spread of this deadly virus.

My fear is when this becomes a big bang, our myopic government and poor heathcare system wont be able to fight it

If this is true then we are in for a big trouble. Presently in ofa in kwara state a professor of medicine according to the people staying there confirmed that the professor was treated a UK returned that happened to die of coronavirus and some Alfa when in to do the normal Muslim rite on the burial.
The neighboring company like erinla in kwara state have block there boundaries not to allow someone from ofa in kwara state to past down to there community and likewise oyan in odo otin local government. Is well with Nigeria oooo

It’s was an entirety imported virus...
So it made sense, in the case of limited resources, to prioritize testing the segment of the population likely to bring it in.

The 127 returnees from CIV (who came in through the land border) are so-called “ordinary citizens” but were nonetheless tested.

Well, what I mean by the 'vulnerable' are those with a slim chance of surviving it if they caught it, eg those with underlying health issues. Maybe you have a different explanation for this cheesy
