DAY 5






Lawrence sat so still, eyes following the bird in flight. he watches as children do, with that look of love and awe. His eyes stay with the bird, the beating wings capturing his mind in the most calming of ways, the same way soft waves on the beach do. It's as if he's in love with nature, with life itself.., but then the awful thoughts came pushing the good ones out.., flashes of been shot at slimming it's way in his vision...

"Is it true you're a prince...?"

Lawrence tun his gaze with the alertness of the question to face the little boy, so sweet and gentle.., his childhood days was nothing compare to the life the boy was living...., his childhood was a picture of terror, having to face the brutal aspect of life..

"You don't have to answer him..."Liza cut in jolting Lawrence from his thoughts..."He asks too many questions...., I've learnt to ignore him whenever he throws his annoying questions at me..."

"My questions are not annoying.."Rick blare out..

Lawrence smile slipped when he noticed Rick expression was slowly transiting into a frown..., the boy reminds him of himself when he was his age.., he was so curious about many things after been exposed to such a life that doesn't befits a kid...

"Yes they are.."Liza said, voice clipped..."What kid asked his mother what loves means at 5...?"

Lawrence raised his brow at the revelation....

"I'm 8 now.."Rick returned sharply...."So you should stop treating me like a kid."

"You're 7.."Liza fling back tilting her head forward..

Lawrence sigh and touch his jaw as he watch the sister and brother argue with serious expression...

"Going to 8..."Rick replied...."And that's almost 18.."

Liza scoffs before turning her gaze to her phone..."In dog's years"

Rick frown and turn to face Lawrence..."She treats me like a kid, everyone treats me like a kid.."

"That's because you're a kid.."Liza said back once again turning her expression to him....

"I won't be a kid if I actually have friends of my own size that I talk to..."

Liza rolled her eyes and settled them on her phone....

"You don't have friends..?"Lawrence asked curiously when Rick smouldered back into his angry look....

"Mum doesn't let us go out..."Liza chime in and Lawrence quickly understand the reason behind it.., their mother is scared of loosing them.., with their war against the Godfather, family is the ultimate target....

"We don't even go to school..."Rick blare out bitterly...

"Rick....."Liza dragged the name between her teeth..."You don't have to tell him everything..."

Lawrence smile slip..."It's okay.."

Liza sigh..."We have home teachers..."

Lawrence suck his teeth....."Your mother must have reason for doing so.."

"She does..."Liza said awkwardly and quickly lour her eyes to her phone...

"Do you love my aunt..."Rick asked, voice smooth and cheerful

Lawrence widened his eyes in stunned surprise...

"I told you.."Liza chided..."All he talks about is love like he knows something about love.."

Lawrence chuckle at Liza words, then he glanced over at Rick who was staring at him impatiently for his question to be answered...., does he love her.., could what he feels for her be called love, he feel drawn to her and find himself thinking about her so often..., the last time he felt this way about anyone was 4years ago..., he had met this pretty girl during a workout, she was stunning in every ramifications..., he found himself stealing glances from her but never got a chance to talk to her during and after the workout session..., then they met again on another fateful day.., when she spoke to him.., her voice melt every large wall inside him.., she was cheerful.., the kind of girl any man will dream of having..., for weeks they were seeing each other but their conversations was always casual..., until he decided to delve into her personal life....

"Are you single..?"He had asked her

She was quiet for a while making he wonder if he had asked something he shouldn't have...

"It's complicated..."She had told him...

Her odd reply was the beginning of complicating thoughts on his heart..., he liked the girl.., every fibre in him was enough to know he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her...

He didn't want to go further with the questions but with the way his heart was beating then.., he knew he needed to ease the tension in him...

"How so..?"He had ask her

He watch her drop the ostrich chips and reclined her back on the chair.., like he had just pushed her into thoughts she had kept locked faraway in her chest and never want to unlock the memories...

"I have a husband..."She had said and it broke his heart....

"Do you..?"Rick crowled jolting him from his thoughts

He heaved a deep sigh and look at the boy's face..., he was so innocent and curious..., he was that way in his childhood days.., wanting to know things.., sometimes his mother just ignore him and chase him off and when he attempts to ask his father.., he sits him down and start telling him how to be a good king....

"You have to make the people fear you..."His father had said to him when he was small...., and he always tends to emphasized on the fear.....

"It's complicated.."He said to Rick who was kinling for a reply

"Complicated...!."Rick said with shrugged shoulders...."What does that mean..?"

"It means it's difficult to understand..."Liza chimes in..."And at your level, I doubt you'll understand..."

"You all are having fun....."

The children spun around to see their mother....
"Mum thank God you're here..."Liza said...

"Mm..."Claude mutter with a smile..."Did I miss something....?"

"Not at all.."Lawrence jump in ....."Actually I was just having a conversation with your son..."

"Mm-hmm...."Claude mutter..."I do hope he isn't asking too much questions..."

"Trust me mum.."Liza cut in.."Rick's mouth is like the size of a bucket..."

Claude smile slipped..."Liza why don't you take your brother in.., I'll love to speak to our guest"

Liza brows flutter before she hesitantly stood up..
"Let's go loud mouth.."She said to Rick

"I'm not a loud mouth.."Rick said after before dragging his feet to follow her..

"You're doing well with the kids..."Claude said reverting her gaze from her children to Lawrence....

Lawrence nibbed..."My sister and I were the same..., we fight almost over everything.."

Claude laugh...."When I was pregnant with Rick.., Liza couldn't take her hands from my stomach..., she was always praying I have him sooner.., and now that he's out..., I can't get enough of their quarrels.."

Lawrence chuckle knowing he did same when his mother was pregnant with Maria...."He did mention they aren't going to school..., could your fight with the Godfather be the reason..?"

Claude heaved a deep sigh and glance back to see if her children were out of sight..."He is.."She said returning her gaze to him..."Rick will understand better when he grows up.."

Lawrence jiggle over the words..., his mother had always told him he'll understand better when he comes of age whenever his father scolds him on why he needs to be feared by the people.....

"Miranda said you were once married to a king..."

Claude exhale.., lour her head and raise it back to face him..."I was...., you see my father and I didn't really have the kind of special relationship between a father and daughter...I hated him for controlling and dictating my life..., he sold me to the prince of Akpatu just for power..."

His jaw twitches as he thought about how his father always takes charge of his action..., he did everything to satisfy his father when he small.., many against his wish but fear his father may use the iron hand on him, he did them regardless...., he remenber the harmless bird his mother has bought him on his 5th year birthday...., the bird stayed with him, he plays and talks to it even though the bird never said anything back.., for once in his life he felt he had a friend who cared despite not been a human...., but his joy was shortlived when his father ordered him to kill the bird..., asking why wasn't a question anyone dare to ask..., when the king says something...you do it without questions...
He cried as he hold the harmless bird and squeezed it's neck until it was lifeless...

"I heard stories about Akpatu..."He said leaning his head forward..."About how the prince parent were killed and he came back for revenge.."

"The prince name is Pious..., and the man who killed his parent was the father of the king I got married to.."

His forehead creased in stunned surprise...."Your father forced you to marry him knowing his father killed the late king..."

"My father didn't know, and I can't say he forced me..., first that was the case but then I realised I had to marry him to find the truth about what happened to the late king..., and I was digging so deep until Pious returned and joined in the war..."

"Pious..., I heard he succeeded in destroying every chief that had a hand in his parent death..."

"He did..., but I wasn't there to watch all of it happen..., I left and came back here when my husband died..."

"You came back to the same man who orchestrated the plan behind you getting married to that chief son..."

Claude sniffle and continue..."You see years ago I severe all ties with my father thinking he killed the man I use to see..., his name was Rick..., and he's the only man I've truly loved.., we were going to run away together until we were caught and he was shot dead right there in front of me..."

"Oh God.., I'm sorry.., that must have been so painful and traumatizing...."

"It was.."She said..."But then it made me stronger, and that was another reason I agree to get marry to the chief's son despite suspecting his father had a hand in what happened to the late king..., I wanted to be stronger.., powerful..., but then I had to leave it all when I find out he was the one who actually ordered the dead of Rick and not my father as I always thought...., I came back here to apologise to my father for blaming him.., for not listening even when he was trying to tell me the truth..."

Lawrence nib on his bottom lips dwelling on the thoughts that him too had to leave after been exposed to sorts of inhuman activities courtesy of his father who didn't leave any stone untouched in making sure he becomes like him....

His mother fear he was gradually becoming the man his father wanted so she had to convince his father that sending him abroad to learn more about what politics entail and having the knowledge of the white man will help him more in becoming a king that his father wants...

It wasn't easy convincing his fathet before he finally agreed to it..., and that was his freedom.., how he escaped the cruel clutches of his father and deadly teaches.....

"So how does the Godfather come into all this..?"He asked curiously

He watch as she drew her lips into a snarl and he wonders if he just asked the wrong question..

"Four years ago..."She said, voice gentle and casual unlike what he expects...."A man came to my father with a business proposal...., after much thoughts about it I realised the deal won't be favourable to us in the future so I asked my father to decline the proposal the man was making..., my father did, then weeks passed and then months and then one day we were just sitting here like we doing now when a woman ran to us crying that her son has been killed..., we investigated who could have killed her son in such a brutal way... , we couldn't find any answers and that was how the killings continue only for us to realised the killings were a consequence for a deal we rejected......"She bit her lower lip before she continued.."My father sent out scouts to search for these killers..., my father sent 10 men and only one returned injured beyond cause but he was left alive to deliver a message...., and that was the first day we heard about the Godfather...., he told us...we're paying for our disobedience, that the only way to stop the killing is if my father step out from the throne....., so says the Godfather...."

Her words surged up the rage inside Lawrence but he kept it contain and listen as she continues....

"A week later.., he brought war to our doorstep.., I saw a glance of his face when he killed my father.., I couldn't see his entire face because he was wearing a mask.., he defeated us and for once in my life, I felt death crippling all over me...."

"If he won.., why didn't he take the throne...?"

"I don't know..., but I remembered his words very clear..., he said a promise has to be fulfilled..."

"What promise...?"Lawrence asked anxiously

"I don't know...."

"So he said that to you...?"Lawrence asked

"He said that to Miranda...."

Shock raced across Lawrence face...."Miranda..!"

Claude nodded....."And when I think about it..., i think Miranda is the reason he spared the rest of us and didn't take the throne"

"Does he know Miranda...?"Lawrence asked anxiously

Claude inhale deeply...."I don't know..."

"Your majesty..."

Claude spun around to see the person...

"I need to talk to you..."Capisho said with a cringe at Lawrence...

Claude gave Lawrence a side smile before standing up to follow Capsiho to a corner where Lawrence wont hear their conversation

"What is it..?"Claude asked...

"I think Miranda left...."Capisho said handling her a paper..."I saw this paper in her room when I went there..."

Claude heart fluttered as she read the words in the paper...

"Do she think she's gone after the Godfather....?"Capisho asked

Claude swallowed dryly...."That stupid girl.., I told her not to go..."

"Should i go after her...?"

"No..."Claude replied sharply...."She made her choice..,I told her not to go but she did.., whatever happens to her, she's on her own..."

Miranda look both sides of the road in search of anything that could be danger, when she saw none.., she pull down her jacket hood from her head and zip her back bag open.., she took out the pistol and check the bullets.., she dropped it back on the bag and took out the picture, she glance at it for a while and dropped it..then she zipped the bag and hung it around her two shoulder..., she's going to find the Godfather, then she's going to say the words he once said to her right back to his face before she shoots him....A promise has to be fulfilled
