At least 17 people were said to have been killed when a fighter jet belonging to the Nigerian Air Force fired a bomb on Sakotoku village in Damboa local government area of Borno state.

Residents told TheCable that those killed included women, and children who were said to be playing under mango trees.

The air force, military sources said, was informed that Boko Haram insurgents were gathering around the village on Thursday afternoon.

The supposed target, according to a source, was an area in Korongilum, a neighbouring village 12 kilometres away where suspected Boko Haram insurgents had gathered earlier.

“We don’t know if they didn’t communicate well with the land troops as the air force jet fired that bomb on the village,” one of the sources said.

“Seventeen people were killed, mostly women and their children playing under mango trees. Many were also injured and have been taken to the 25 army brigade in Damboa, and those with critical injuries were taken to Maiduguri.”

Some of the villagers whose houses were destroyed have found their way to Damboa.

In February, residents of Garkida, Adamawa state and Korongilum, Borno state, had alleged that NAF fighter jets refused to open fire on suspected Boko Haram insurgents when they attacked their communities.

Ibikunle Daramola, NAF spokesperson, had then told TheCable they could not engage the insurgents because the situation in Garkida was chaotic, and that they took the measure so they would not hit civilians.

In 2017, 126 civilians were killed in Rann, Borno state, in an accidental air strike by the military.

When TheCable contacted about the incident in Sakotoku, Daramola said: “It’s a matter of operation” and the defence headquarters would be in a better position to speak on the matter.”

Both Onyema Nwachukwu and John Enenche, defence headquarters spokespersons, were not reachable for comment as they neither responded to calls nor replied text messages.

Another sign of incompetence. The time to do the right thing is now. All the service chiefs have to leave. Serving Nigeria is not their birth rights.

This incident should not be swept under the carpet as was done in the past. Someone should be held accountable and liable otherwise it will repeat itself. Human lives are sacred. What nonsense.

incompetence at it best.

the villagers would have preferred the security forces left them alone for Boko boys.

or could it be that those killed are Boko boys and the community being Boko boys apologist are trying to paint the security agencies black?

Though they did wrong but this same villagers will allow Boko Haram stay in their houses, eat and dine together without informing the military men. Abeg northerners are in one way or the other Boko Haram sympathizers.

You scanned, locked and got a confirmation from superior to drop a bomb and you're saying it's accidental.

What kind of madness is this? angry

Hmmm! In as much as I condemn the action of the NA but the villagers also need to stop harbouring terrorists, it will be very hard to separate chaff from wheat in this case. But if bombing them is the only solution to BH and the villagers are not ready to expose the criminals within themselves, let NA keep bombing them together till they get sense.

Openbusiness:

What of when they bombed the IDP camp by "mistake" according to them, was the government IDP camps too filled with villagers hiding terrorists? Chad military just killed over 1000 boko haram in a single day, without killing any Nigeria civilians, recovered countless weapons and equipment. Yet our own, if grounds troops request for air assault backup, if they don't crash the plane, they will bomb civilians leaving the boko haram to escape, or bomb IDP camps. You better tell yourself the truth, something is seriously wrong with our army, stop blaming innocent civilians for their failures. Your army needs serious overhauling and rebuilding. Bombing civilians all the time, civilians that are not even inside Sambisa. Buratai has really moved to the theatre. The incompetence really shows. Won't be surprised if more mishaps keep happening.
nams77:

Its not as easy as you think. Let me give you a scenario. In a neighborhood, must people know who the criminals are but can't point them out for fear of reprisal attacks. In U.S there is the witness protection scheme that gives informants like this protection, relocate them and even change their identity. But in naija, na police go even show the arm robbers the person wey come expose them

You both have valid points but the northerners scenario is a different case, and if you live or have lived in the north you will understand this better.
In the South West, the people form vigilante, landlord association etc, they report the slightest suspicion to the police infact at their disadvantage. (I can remember a case of when we caught a boy burgling a house and we reported to the police, the community still contribute up to 20k to the police for reporting Kwa , and this does not deter them for doing so in the future). But in the north , it is a different case, if a thief/criminal is being pursued and get to enter a community, that is likely to be the end of it. They do all sort of coverups there, how many times have u ever heard that they lynched a thief over like we do see in the south! It's a different scenario

From Quota system Generals, to Quota system troops that boast on social media they will raw rape the mothers of civilians and give them HIV, and now to Quota system airforce pilots........The Nigerian military has been turned into a disaster by the Quota system Dictator Buhari. now I finally know why IBB removed this man. He was doing the country a BIG favor. IBB deserves a special medal of Honor for saving Nigeria in the 80's from this disaster. The world's most powerful Black Army equipped and trained with billions of dollars has been turned to a disaster filled with incompetence under 6 years by Zoohari. Idriss Derby for Nigeria President 2023!

Nigerian army and airforce, always assuming under Buhari .

Something is fishy. It is now obvious that we have boko haram saboteurs in the military.

Chad will be laughing at our soldiers now.

They have started again
Shame shame shame? Shame!!!!!

On this platform called nairaland we have seen the Nigerian Air force blowing out cargo vessels in the Niger Delta region with outstanding precision, not once, not twice! Degrading the environment all in the name of stopping oil bunkering.

When it comes to Boko haram they always make mistakes, if not bombing IDPs, they bomb villages or crash land to kill young southern pilots. This is the best Burutai could do after arriving the North East?

It must be tough trying to be like Chad I guess.

Make Una gosidin for corner abegi

I swear all the money used to send all these our military officers for training overseas is a waste!

If the intention is not to kill all villagers, why does the Nigerian Air Force always bomb residents without ground troops first engaging the terrorists?

Even if you were informed the terrorist were there in the village, what precautionary measures were taken to ensure very minimal civilian casualties?

You heard Book Haram terrorists & fiam! You just start raining bombs on innocent homes angry

Nigerian Military is overrated.

I have never seen a more incompetent security apparatus as the entire Nigeria Defense force . What do you expect when illiterate abokis are recruited into the force?

They must think it's about danfodio and the army of horse and sword.

If they are not killing civilians willfully, they are killing them mistakenly. Stupid government with their stupid and untrained servants.

Ordinary operation that Chad carried out successfully, look at what the zoo government is doing to themselves. Not to talk of the ones they didn't tell us .
