Hello Nairalander. I am creating this thread for every salesman and those that wants to join the sales profession. Basically the sales am talking about involves fast moving consumer goods (FMCG).
There are two kinds of sales which are sales of goods such as ready to drink, beverages, seasonings, instant foods, pharmaceuticals, dairies etc. And sales of services such as sales of insurance, investments, properties, etc. Like I said I will be focusing on FMCG sales. Feel free to drop your questions and comments

Let's kick off proper. When you meet a lot of young guys out there and as them to join sales as them, if they would be interested in sales job, 90% will tell you god forbid I will not do marketing job. Note in FMCG organizations, sales team is usually different from marketing team. Sales actually deals with the placement of a company's product in the channel they operate. For example ABC company have finished manufacturing a palm oil. The sale team will be the ones that will distribute the oil in various markets. So basically sales deals with distribution of products (collection of monies) while marketing team are the ones that ensures that consumers pick the distributed oil off from the shelves.
There are lots of FMCG companies in Nigerian. So are conglomerate, foreign and local businesses. Funny enough most us want to work for any of these companies but not as a salesman. Let's classify some companies with their area of specialization.
Dairy (milk or milk base products): Friesland Campania, Promasidor, Arla, Oriental foods etc
RTD- none alcoholic (ready to drink) Chi limited, Frutta Juice, Suntory etc
Carbonated drinks: coca cola, Pepsi, bigi, Rc cola, LA cassera, big cola etc
Soaps and detergents: Pz cussons, P & G, Unilever, Duraju, etc
RTD alcoholic: Guinness, NB, Ab n bev, etc

Let's continue......Sales job is closely related to marketing but in actual sense, its not. One can switch from sales to the following role such as Trade marketing, brands and category management, capability development, Route to market etc. The following are the levels we have in sales
1. VSR: Van sales rep. they are the basic entry level of sales job and they are the regular guys we see on our streets driving branded vehicles selling to those stores around your neighborhood. Minimum entry level is SSCE. although lots of B.sc guys are now VSRs, the good thing is that one can grow up the rank easily with a B.sc in some structured organization.
2. OMSR: also known as open market sales rep. They are placed in the market and are mostly female minimum entry level is SSCE
3. Sales Executives / Territory sales mgr (TSM)/ Business development mgr (BDM)/ Field Sales mgr (FSM): This is a supervisory role. This role is a supervisory role. At this stage, its is the duty of the supervisor to ensure that an assigned territories target is met.

Other roles include Area sales manager, Regional sales manager, National sales manager, Sales director. For this thread we will be focusing on entry level sales from VSR to TSM...........

Sorry about the policy change. Best believe if you can weather the storm, you'll become a better 'sailor.'
I won't mind chipping in my 2cents as a contribution to your biz though

Like I said sales is dynamic and fun. It's an act of distributing your finish goods to various channel to enable the consumer purchase at their convenience. We have various channels we can place our goods. We use an acronym call SIMON for the channels.
S: Specialized Channel: this are outlets or vendors that are known for selling a special kind of product. They do not sell all fits all like other channels. Example includes: Petrol stations, Pharmacy, Babies store etc. For example whenever one see a petrol station, of course you know fuel is the major thing they sell but their is a mini mart in almost all filling stations you can place your products there. Same goes for pharmacy.
I: Institutions: this need no definitions they are usually an organization where people with one goal usually meets in large number. Example includes University, Churches, Mosques, government parastatals etc
M: Modern Trade: this is our one stop shoes which we call the supermarkets. You can show at your convinence under a very conducive atmosphere and some you can just go for sight seeing. They have specific entry and exit point Example Shoprite, Spar, Games etc
Open market: where cluster of people gather together to buy and sell. There is no specific entry and exit point. E.g Oke arin, Yaba market, Main market onisha, Oshodi market etc
N: Neighborhood Store: that mama Bolu that sells things in your street.

With all this various channel, you must determine the one that best fits your model. Tomorrow we will be talk about coverage of these areas

I really wish you would continue this thread. I just stumbled on it now, and coincidentally, I am trying to enter into Sales/Marketing in the FMCG, though my work experience so far is not in FMCG.

What can I do? Any helpful advice?
