Hamid, the venom in your post is forgivable primarily because you have no idea of how a small business runs especially in this country.

Many small businesses are operating on the edge of the precipice. Indeed I know many bakeries that have shut down (hopefully this is temporary)
just because of the increase in the cost of essential raw materials. Some have also been threatened because they operate with a minimal gross profit margin which is predicated on a keen competition the are facing in their segment.

At the end of every month they can barely meet payments to suppliers and other contingent costs.

I will however assume that your post was anchored on your humanitarian leaning and not on experience as a business owner or as a dispassionate observer of the economy and our local business atmosphere.

Please understand that many companies are operating on hope and it will take a while before they break even and thus have a reservoir they can tap into. These are definitely not easy times for the business owner.

Many suggestions have been advanced above and some of them are quite sterling. The solution i would like to proffer is that when work resumes workers should work a bit smarter and harder to ensure that things get back to normal as soon as possible.

One of the options available is that there will be no bonuses and 13th month this year. Companies should collapse those monies into April salary and start paying it off weekly.

Where there is a will there is a way.

For people working for the government i think yes,but we working for private firms i think not,only if they are doing it out of benevolence which I'm counting on,doesn't mean they have to pay the full salary amount but just something to keep us going during this lockdown.

After some days of lockdown the head teacher said I should pay salary, I told her to pay half she said if I can't pay full I should forget it say am not being Human that she can't feel happy to pay half salary... After the whole tussle I said its an order go pay half, she said she is not where the money is... Now who is more wicked ? We are good at talking but give those same people castingating the same power and see how they would act... Note... The short answer is: The structure of any commercial enterprise is inherently similar to any individual or personality. Without the possibility of external assistance The business, company or firm will sustain its workers on three merits:

Its needs.
Its resources.
Its character.

The lock down will eventually end so if it BADLY needs its workers to stay alive it will do everything it can plus more to keep them.

If it has the resources to, either out of vast reserves or highly liquid assets or access to credit underpinned by the possibility of a post pandemic rebound. Not every business will rebound to the same levels after such a severe economic upheaval such as this.

The character of the business, its ownership or its promoters. If they are either socialist or humanitarian in character, yes, tthey will go to severe lengths to keep staff. If they are hard nosed capitalists with great latitude due to lax laws and the setting is highly informal.... which accounts for the vast majority of Nigerian businesses then the outlook is very dire indeed.

Now, all these factors depend on how long the lockdown will last. That is the reason why I say repeatedly that it is important that the government gives clarity and leadership as to first of all what makes for the lockdown and what they expect to see before it is lifted so that businesses and the economy can build resilience. If things remain open ended and uncertain it is likely most businesses will seek to cut costs immediately because the owners and promoters too are human and want to survive.

Leadership is critical. The dynamics of the pandemic in Nigeria is simple. The more people are strained financially either through poverty or job loss the less likely there is to be social cohesion. The lockdown will become less and less effective and the vicious cycle of poverty and spread will escalate.

These are the things the egg heads in government should be deeply concerned about. How to square this circle.

It is not a stupid rationale. It is a normal rational. But for you I am sure your support for government will blind you to the reality that a lot of businesses were not doing well before the pandemic. How many of them have the means you describe here. What government does in other places is to guarantee businesses both big and small the means to keep their workers as the first line of palliatives.

It is government that is locking down. It is them that should provide the means of compliance. If government doesn't have the means or the will to palliate then it should fashion alternative strategies to total lockdown in fighting corona. Because if it squeezes people in between a rock and a hard place they will not willingly comply.

I want to ask you this simple question. What do you expect of Nigeria if this 'lockdown' continues till December... for instance.
