Forget the population thing..it isn't a deciding factor here...India with over a billion people has only 9 gold medals..

The problem is that our government has failed to invest well in sports in the country... During the military regime,more attention given to the sport sector and athletes were rewarded well if they performed well at international tournaments,maybe that was why we won all 3 gold medals during the military regime..but corruption has made the government focus less on the sport sector...
A lot of Nigerian athletes are being poached yearly to represent other countries.. like Salwa El Nasser (Ebelechukwu Agbapuonwu) that won gold for Bahrain at the last world championship..

We have the talent,the funding is what's poor..and it's quite sad
