There's just something unusually casual/cavalier about your tone/attitude towards how you got it in the first place and handled it that makes your writeup a bit...idealistic though. I know your intention is to uplift and spread hope but some of your rhetoric could also be taken as a bit misleading

What you first need to understand is that every adult is expected to take responsibility for his/her own actions. As an adult, one has the option of either maintaining total abstinence or having only protected sex. But what you find in reality amongst most couples who are into a relationship is that they eventually engage in unprotected sex without first testing themselves & their partner. They may even be 100% faithful to their current partner.

However, you have to bear in mind that a person who is in a relationship today with someone may have also had relationships in the past that probably didn't work out or lead to marriage, before eventually meeting their present partner. So as an adult, if such a person has never checked his/her status or that of the partner they're dating and went ahead to engage in unprotected sex, when the problem of STD or HIV occurs they're expected to learn from their mistakes, find a solution & move on with their lives without constantly dwelling on the unpleasant past experiences or trying to apportion blames to anyone. That is what it means to take responsibility for one's actions.

Mind you, just like some STDs & other viruses, it is not everybody that experiences symptoms for HIV. Some people are actually asymptomatic. You can browse it out if you're in doubt. So it is only when they go for a test that they can detect it early enough.

The man said that he enrolled for volunteer's work for HIV patients in rural areas across Africa. It's possible he was exposed to the virus there and later infected his girlfriend. He was the person that started showing signs of the infection while at his outreach which prompted his returning home.

Well, I don't know if the side effect affect only few people. I once took PEP for Hiv. The side effect was terrible. Headache, dizzness, nausea and vomiting, diarhoea for 1 month that I was taking it. I wished I was death. There is nothing good about contacting the virus. To me if I contract it, it is a death sentence.

I have somebody that contacted it but leaving fine. It is never a death sense. Compare HIV to cancer,you will know HIV is not a death sentence. Though I have been so fortunate not have it. It is a long story.
