Is that not how Benue Governor was saying it was Fulani herdsmen that was causing havoc in benue then only for them to discover it’s a tribal war between Tiv and Jukun?

There has been attack between 2 villages (Hukke and Funture villages) in that Bassa LGA with each village accusing each other.

Hakeem Olajuwon.

He is the highest rated Nigerian in the history of his own sport. He was dominant in his position for several years and many believe the most skilled/complete player in his position.

I don't think you will find any other Nigerian whose all time rank in his sport is as high AND was also great for as long.
He checks the boxes for both sustained excellence and peak performance, as well as historical ranking.

Hakeem Olajuwon never played for Naija jare.

Have you heard of Dick Tiger, a two weight boxing champion and twice the Ring magazine fighter of the year. I don't think anyone surpass that for now. Maybe Adesanya can become the greatest if MMA gains more traction.

Not a terrible pick but I don’t think that’s the best answer.
Kanu Nwankwo is a legend of the game in Nigeria but how dominant was he in his sport in the continent or globally.
In the ranking of greatest ever footballers what is his global rank?
Even greatest ever African footballers, where does he rank?
Is he even the greatest ever Nigerian footballer?

Recently when people were naming our all time 11 I don’t remember many people mentioning his name.
What was his output in terms of goals for the national team, especially in big tournaments?

@bolded: That is the reason why he is FIRMLY in contest to be the greatest Nigerian sportsman.

Remember your original question is Who is the greatest Nigerian sportsman? And why?

We can't use the world ranking to choose the greatest Nigerian.

Compare him with his counterparts in the country not in the continent or world.

Even in the continent he was a 2 time African footballer of the year, A 2 time BBC foot Aller of the year, Olympic Gold medal winner (first in Africa in the men's football category), Nigeria league winner.... Haba put respek for this guy name na.

Kanu might not be the goal machine that Ronaldo is, but you see those two goals against Brazil in Atlanta? Those 2 goals are enough to make him Nigeria's all time greatest!

Because people didn't choose him in their all time XI here didn't mean he doesn't deserve it. People didn't put Ronaldo in their EPL all time XI here too unless someone made a case for him and others started changing their line ups.

As far as Nigeria sports is concerned, for me, it is Kanu Nwankwo.

1) Olajuwon played for Nigeria at junior level.

2) I know Dick Tiger. He is not a bad pick and worthy of consideration but he was not as highly rated or respected in his sport as Hakeem, and he definitely was not as dominant.

3) Even your Adesanya is not and will never be a Nigerian international.
How can you remove Olajuwon who left Nigeria at 20 and PLAYED FOR NIGERIA and include Adesanya who left Nigeria at 10 and has never competed for Nigeria.

TRY AGAIN. Lol

Good shout. It's about the flag they fly though. Olajuwon became American the moment he signed up for dream team, no different from Emmanuel Olisadebe

Kanu is not a terrible pick but I just don’t think he was dominant enough. I personally rate Yekini above him. The kind of confidence Yekini gave Nigerian fans, and the fear he instilled in our opponents is unparalleled in our history.

There was this nigerian heavweight from the mid nineties - president Ike, went 20-0, then went to jail.

could have been a real contender for the boxing pick now if things had gone a bit better for him

Ibeabuchi. Yeah, he suffered from psychosis and I think raped someone. We can't claim him. America should have him.

Atanda Musa is another one and he was the O.G.
With Atanda Musa and Segun Toriola Nigeria dominated African table tennis for over 30yrs

His story is still being written. He is on the way there but if he retires today he would not be regarded as an all time great. But that is by the way.

Another question. Who is the greatest Nigerian sportsman of all time? And why?

Francis Obikwelu.

Who do I leave out between Roger Milla, George Weah, Abedi Pele and Raba Madjer? Not to mention Yekini, Samuel Eto or even Japhet N'doram.

I'm going with the ones who made the biggest impact in AFCON, World Cup and European Cup in that order.

Limited to only the players I watched

GK - Nkono (Grobelaar fought for Apartheid regime so the soil rejects him)

LB - Kwadwo Asamoah (can't think of a great LB for now)
CB - Noureddine Naybet
CB - Kalidou Koulibaly
RB - Lauren Etame

CM - Ahmed Hassan (Xavi of AFCON)
CM - Yaya Toure
AM - Abedi Pele

RW - Mohammed Salah
LW - Sadio Mane

CF - Roger Milla

Somehow one day, Aruna Quadri will be in the conversation especially when it comes to Nigeria table tennis.

He has done better than Toriola and Atanda Musa at the Olympics already by reaching the semi final before losing to that Chinese. If he should find a way to win an Olympic gold medal, he surely will be in the conversation.

5 Olympics with always a hope of a medal running against those doped up girls like FloJo, Gail Deavers, Merlene Ottey and Marion Jones.

She was the staple of my Olympics as a child, and got the bronze medal in 200m which is better than long jump. And she was better than Ajunwa in all the sprints forcing Ajunwa to try her luck in long jump.

I just see Ajunwa as a Buster Douglas who got lucky one time while Onyali gave me repeated hope in every final over many years.
