Op do you reside in Lagos? Kindly let me know whenever you decide to dispose any, seems animal husbandry is getting lucrative now. This could be combined with salary job if there is a place to rear it and agriculture will be the way out of the projected famine after this covid-19, those dealing in it will have every course to be happy and laugh to the bank.

Yes, Lagos based.
Unfortunately, I don't intend disposing/selling off for now cry. Although, I have started castrating all other male goats due to the persistent fights and troubles given to the females.
Moreover, I should be buying another sets of bucks from a source soonest to help sort out issues that might arise with inbreeding.

Please upload some pics of the farm and the goats. How do you castrate your male goats? I really want to learn so I can do same with one of my male goat, its becoming a nuisance. Thanks

Up until recently, I have been using the cutting method. This I do within 7 to 8 weeks.
Well, my vet did help in castrating a year old bucks using the Burdizzo method and I think I just might opt for this method; less blood. Although still contemplating on its success rate.

@Jidestroud I'm your big fan and following up on your agro projects.

I'm definitely gonna start something someday even if it's for the fun and joy of doing it.

Well done.

My goats have been giving wahala none stop on the farm grin. Lots and lots of destruction to my plantain farm, they technically ate up everything. After thinking and deliberating on what to do as payback for their unchecked behaviours after several warnings angry , I decided to restrict their movements to their rooms.

Walahi, I pursue goats taya today! grin, them no even send me say I be their owner oooo!!! See sprinting... (Foolish Wild Goats) cheesy. It was almost successful but I still have about 4 hiding in the plantation. The chase continues tomorrow. wink cheesy wink cheesy.

Long story boss... Looooong story!!! cry

Okay let me shorten it. The goat I paid for literally disappeared. I was to go pick it up a week after I paid for it, but, on getting there to retrieve it, nobody knew how the goat vanished. In summary, I was scammed. Although, I was given back 8k and told to come back for my balance which I never did.

Yes, it is not profitable if you're not doing it intensively as a business. Goat business comes in 3 forms - meat goat, dairy goats for milk, and goat breeding. You must decide which one you're into, so you set appropriate targets.

To make money from meat goats, the animals must be kept in pens and fed aggressively with balanced rations so they gain weight fast.

If you're keeping them to breed, having them gain weight fast is usually not the target. But, to succeed generally in goat business, good nutrition is key and their health must be closely monitored, with vaccines and dewormers given on schedule.

Your goats must eat a well balanced rations, with adequate amounts of digestible protein, carbohydrate, and mineral salts, as grass fodder alone does not promote this.

To feed your goats cheaply, get wheat or barley seeds and sunflower seeds. Sprout these grains hydroponically and give to your goats to help them grow healthy. Also, supplement them with mineral blocks to lick and have a VET DOC to help prescribe good dewormers and to set a vaccine schedule for them.

Do this and see a good turnaround in your goat business. Goodluck with your goat business!

Use google and youtube to find more information on "hydroponic fodder for goats." Below is an example of goats eating grains that were sprouted using hydroponics

I am interested in this project. More especially the interaction between the farmer and his children( goats).

Can't stop laughing at restricting them in a room as punishment cheesy

Congrats Mr farmer. I love farming so much. It's a pity is something I can only fantasize only of now.

Don't you have goat pens?

We usually have animal pen. Their excrete and remnants of what they eat are what we use as natural manure for farming.

I don't know how you trained yours on what to eat but the goats from my side eat grasses, see that plantain leaves, it's their food, even dry ones. It's said that any green leave your animals like sheep's and goats can't eat are not good for human consumption. Palm fronds, coconut, mango, cashew, anything u can think of. If u have farm, these are things u can readily get from your farm free.

We also give goats that corn fibre.
Well done

Moreover, I just adjusted my kidding periods to 2 times in 18 months as advised by goat farmers. This would require controlled crossbreeding between them henceforth.
