2020 is going to be a tough year for many countries. But how do you handle a problem like Kenya's? grin
NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 20 – Kenya’s Growth
Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to
decelerate to 3.5 percent in 2020 due to
pressure on agricultural export, tourism
activities, locust invasion, and COVID-19
pandemic, a credit rating report has said.
The report by Agusto & Company Limited, a
leading Pan-African credit rating agency has
given Kenya a “B+” sovereign credit rating.

Even when the Kenyan economy grew by the questionable 5% rate, youth unemployment soared. It goes without saying that it's about to get significantly worse.

Key factors that contribute to this rating include
persistent fiscal slippages by the Government
leading to expanded external borrowing, rising
budget deficit to GDP ratio, high-risk debt
distress
owing to the adverse effect of locust
invasion and COVID-19 pandemic and a
worsening balance of trade deficit due to low
demand for the country’s exports.
The borrowing was just crazy. I guess they didn't envisage a sudden disaster such as covid19. Paying back those unsustainable loans will be nigh impossible. This will further depress the growth of the Kenyan economy. Then the country has been having a trade deficit for a number of years now. How the hell did that happen? What happened to city your coat according to your size? grin

Given that Kenya has consistently missed its
revenue target by at least 8 percent since
2014/15 fiscal year,
we expect the country’s
fiscal deficit for the 2019/20 budget cycle to
remain well above the Government’s 5.1
percent target and the East African Community
convergence benchmark of 3 percent,” Agusto
& Company Limited Country Manager
Ikechukwu Iheagwam
said.
This is what we have been telling the little Indians on this thread for years. Your books are cooked. It is why you need to rely on Chinese loans which has choked you now. There is no way you can balance your budget in a long time to come. And again, your trade balance is always negative! Even Togo is better. grin
Well done, Mr Ikechukwu, Agusto & company country manager for Kenya. wink

Before COVID, companies where already declaring bankruptcy and laying off huge number of staffs.

Covid just compounded the issues and more Kenyans are going to come running to WFP to be able to feed.

Being poor differs from country to country,

We got education, health, world roads, sports facilities, free housing, water, electricity, disability grants, old age grants, children grants, free education, world class universities, world class schools, etc in all spheres of the country

Thats why SA ranks high

Even with that label we still ranks high

Even a poor person will have dignity of owning a house with electricity, water, and running sewage system

I am also surprised what pride there is in - their first-ever foray outside Nigeria courtsey of SBI and they cannot construct 5km of road.

Their culture idealises the opposite of good. They've been paying the price of that effed up mentality since 1961 AND STILL DON'T KNOW IT.
