Nigeria has so far tested 8,003 persons for COVID-19, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

This is still far below a number of African countries including Kenya, which has a population of 53 million, almost four times less than that of Nigeria.

It is also below that of Ghana, a country of 39 million people, which is at least six times less than Nigeria’s population.

In its latest COVID-19 situation report released on Monday the NCDC stated the number of tests as of the end of Sunday, with 367 persons tested in those previous 24 hour.

The data shows the country’s testing capacity is still far below the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recommendation of mass-testing.

When compared to other African countries, it also suggests Nigeria is lagging behind on the continent.

According to the Worldometres, the global statistics platform, Ghana, for instance, has tested a total of 68,591 persons for coronavirus, 60,000 more than that of Nigeria.

At 13,872, Kenya has tested more than 6,000 persons above Nigeria. At 121,510, South Africa has the continent’s highest testing capacity.

With a population of 59 million, this means the country has tested one in 486 citizens, compared to Nigeria’s ratio of 1:25,000.

Last week, the NCDC said it will commence mass testing for COVID-19 between May and September.

That's nice, we are really fighting this disease, now let compare this to that of other country you can all see that our government is really trying but one more thing that our leaders don't take cognisance of in this nation is that they don't invest much in health sector, rather they prefer to travel abroad to take care of themselves. You are not too young to be a landlord, with that little money of yours yiu can achieve your dream goal in just four month simply visit CAREER>>>, and set up your dream with them. I pray by the end of Ramadan all these issue of coronavirus will have finish in the whole world. But I will like if this home restriction can continue for our leaders so that they will stop flyinging abroad for treatment, now very soon we microbiologist will storm the social media for professionalization of our course, because I ao much believe that if they invest in health sector especially microbiology field we will gain back our giantness and restore our name.

Stop celebrating mediocrity.

Better than none indeed. It is one thing to be a pessimist and another thing to be a dumb optimist.

Nigeria is the giant of Africa in terms of resources and other factors. If other African countries like Kenya and Ghana are doing better than us, it calls for serious sober reflection and re-strategizing.

The slow testing capacity is a fuel and timebomb to the spreading of COVID-19 in Nigeria. How do you identify and quarantine carriers of the disease in good time with this capacity.

We need to hold our government accountable for the way our resources is being managed.

Chaiiii Nigeria is a disgrace, African giant my Ass, as far as am concerned this government is a big scam, who knows what's going on behind the scene, they're likelyhood that our govt irresponsibility on low testing is due to corruption, greed and selfishness to siphon available funds provided for the relief of covid 19........

The key to winning this war is mass testing, contact tracing while everyone stay indoors

I don't know if Nigeria want to eat those test kit donated to them...
How can economically weaker and smaller African countries have more testing capacity than Nigeria? Why on earth do we joke with serious matter like this?

Just look at their plan May to September when other countries are massively testing so as to reopen their economy.

Problem with not testing fast and big enough is that you lose the chance to quickly locate and isolate cases before they escalate.

I read Ghana's report and the reason why they have been able to remove their lockdown is because they have tested more enough to know exactly where the disease is. With this, they have isolated those affected and opened their economy again.

Nigeria risks going the British way with their slow testing. Slow testing is as dangerous as no testing because the virus spreads with no idea of how to locate and isolate
