More food for thought from the always excellent Peccavi. Some take-aways on the so-called Super Camp strategy: The Super Camp concept appears to have improved the survivability of Nigerian bases by concentrating forces in better defended locations. There is clearly a difficult balance between leaving troops in poorly defended positions to be overrun or protecting troops in larger camps but conceding ground to the enemy. Losing troops unnecessarily is clearly unsustainable, but the British Army’s experience of Platoon Houses in Helmand Province, Afghanistan has shown that well trained, well led troops with good fire support and logistics can defend small, far flung bases. In Nigeria’s case the Super Camp concept can only be a short term stop gap (if the Government ever truly wishes to eliminate Boko Haram); until the hinterlands are reoccupied with better planned, defended and resourced bases and/or deploying, highly mobile, flexible and heavily armed troops to dominate the ground. ...the enemy’s ability to move major forces from the Lake Chad area into central southern and eastern Borno speaks to their greater freedom of movement, which is most likely a consequence of the withdrawal of friendly forces into Super Camps. Whilst these camps afford greater protection to friendly forces, it abandons the civilian population to the enemy and allows them the freedom to move, manoeuvre, attack and sustain themselves over a wide swath of land. ARMED FORCES OF NIGERIA NEUTRALIZES ARMED BANDITS THROUGH ITS AIR COMPONENT OF OPERATION GAMA AIKI AT MAGUGA IN NIGER STATE 1. The Armed Forces of Nigeria through its Air Component of Operation GAMA AIKI neutralized several armed bandits at Maguga in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State. The operation, which was conducted in support of Operation THUNDER STRIKE, was executed on 19 April 2020 sequel to reports that some armed bandits, clad in black attire, had been sighted along with a large herd of rustled cattles in the area. 2. Accordingly, the Air Component scrambled its aircraft to attack the location. Upon sighting the approaching attack aircraft, the armed bandits scampered to conceal themselves under nearby shrubs but were engaged with cannon fire which led to the neutralization of several of them. 3. Military authorities said yesterday that with the grand offensive mounted by the Armed Forces of Nigeria against Boko Haram and the Islamic State for West African Province (ISWAP), the body language of terror leader, Abubakar Shekau, is that of surrender. They also confirmed the killing of key Boko Haram commanders during airstrikes on Durbarda, Borno State. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) also said it had produced 18,000 hand sanitisers and ventilator machine, “Dicovent” in support of government’s effort to contain COVID-19 pandemic. It called on federal and state governments to patronise the products produced by Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to enable mass production. Speaking at a briefing in Abuja attended by the leadership of DICON, led by Major General Victor Ezugwu, the Coordinator of the Directorate of Defence Media Operations (DDMO), Major General John Enenche, said while there was no official contact with the terror leader, his body language showed that he was ready to surrender. He added that Boko Haram has been degraded by the ongoing pounding of its forces and structures. “If you talk about body language, the body language is there. If he makes any move in that regard, you will know but from the onslaught from troops, they can’t hide anymore”, he said https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2020/04/21/boko-haram-leader-shekau-ready-to-surrender-says-military/ |

But wait, in the Nigerian army, why does a warrant officer wear a golden eagle and a major wear a silver eagle. Isn't it supposed to be the other way round. |

AskiaHarem: That's a delusional proposition with zero substance. First of all to date there has not been any continous non stop attacks on any NATO territory. Even the very cowardly hit and run tactics have been largely unsuccessful. Before they even get to implement an attack they are taken out. You have a few lone Rangers highly deranged carryout attacks with vehicles, knives and guns but again they are very few. Islamists terrorists have tried in Morocco and Tunisia and failed. Egypt is battling a serious insurgency in the Sinai for many years. Without the intervention of NATO the entire sub Sahara region would have been completely over run. Operation Serval was able to halt a far larger force of partnered terrorists Islamic organisation in Maghreb. Essentially within 2 weeks albeit with the help of Chadian soldiers. Barely a dozen French combatants lost. Boko Haram has been on Nigerian territory and controlling territory for a decade. There is absolutely no basis for comparison. 10 Likes |

Iblawi1: I know many who can make that who aren't even soldiers just from practicing on the range. It really depends on what equipment you have. With the right optics and assault rifle you should hit a melon sized target very easily. However, with steel sights and chaotic disorganised responses, in panic driven battle environment add to that a basic AK47 near impossible. Most basic AK'S effective range is about 300 metres plus. 5 Likes |

NihiIist: He never said so ! Yeap going to the question: why Warrant Officer/Sergeant First Class wear a golden eagle crest, yes the Gold carries a much significance value and more precious than silver. Now warrant officers or Sargent first class wear “The insignia is golden eagle surrounded by the matching golden crown made of olive leaves” Warrant Officers are assistants of our next rank, which is… Master Warrant Officer/Master Sergeant. Officers of this rank are responsible for military equipment. The insignia of the Master Warrant Officer/Master Sergeant is the Nigerian Coat Of Arms, where the horses are silver and the rest is golden. This concludes the non-commissioned ranks. Now the main reason for honoring this NCO’s with this golden eagle crest/insignia is that it’s one of the most important post and level to attain in the NCO’s ranks/Corp and trust me, this guys are battle tested and well experienced. Even CO’s officers treat the with a kind of level of respect because they are usually old in age, military service and experience. Now to the rank of the major: After the Captain comes the Major, “which is the lowest field officer rank in the Nigerian Army”. Majors have a silver eagle on each shoulder. Now let me go on to higher or more senior CO’s. Colonel. These officers are at the top of the field officer hierarchy and at the bottom of the commissioned officer hierarchy. They are responsible for the regiments. Colonels have two silver stars and a silver eagle (all vertically aligned) on each shoulder. Colonel. These officers are at the top of the field officer hierarchy and at the bottom of the commissioned officer hierarchy. They are responsible for the regiments. Colonels have two silver stars and a silver eagle (all vertically aligned) on each shoulder. Then comes the Brigadier general. These officers are responsible for commanding brigades. Brigadiers have three silver stars that form a triangle with a silver eagle on top. This arrangement goes on both shoulders (obviously). The third highest rank in the Nigerian Army is the Lieutenant General. These officers have the vertically aligned emblem of the crossed sword and baton, a star and an eagle, all in gold and on both shoulders. stars that form a triangle with a silver eagle on top. This arrangement goes on both shoulders (obviously). The next mid-level commissioned officer rank is the Major General. Major Generals have a golden emblem of the crossed sword and baton below a golden eagle on each shoulder. The third highest rank in the Nigerian Army is the Lieutenant General. These officers have the vertically aligned emblem of the crossed sword and baton, a star and an eagle, all in gold and on both shoulders. Now why does a Brigadier General have or uses three silver stars that form a triangle with a silver eagle on top and warrant officer wear a golden eagle surrounded by a matching golden crown made of olive leaves. It’s not about the seniority or hierarchy but level attained in such commission. Please do you get the contrast ! 3 Likes |

bidexiii: This is a forum, it should be about exchange of ideas, thoughts, opinion, knowledge, understanding and strategy, etc, etc. Castigating somebody and or using gutter language is not beneficial to the discourse. Once again l remind you, you are if we can use the term a senior statesman here. Your language should be civil and again you should have an open mind even to those that disagree with you. Discuss, appraise, balance and conclude on substance and rationality. You are denigrating the forum with this kind of distasteful language and creating rancour. Please be civil. Being parochial and unwavering in your opinion is not a sign of intelligence. It's often said that knowledge is the ability to learn new things and wisdom the ability to apply it. Below are a number of screen shots that highlights the value placed on virtual battle games and the transfer of that technology to the training of today's modern soldier. That shows you lack knowledge of the interfacing of gaming technology with military training. It seems you are stuck in the past. 4 Likes 2 Shares

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGCj6Alurzc I don't understand why they had to install the secondary weapon on the BRT, it is to have something to use for soft targets? Wouldn't it prevent the main gun from rotating effectively 180 degrees? |

Many it seems are still using DOS as a computer operating system when we are on Windows 10. The skill set of playing virtual war games is now an expectation for recruit coming into the modern armies of the world. It you look at the RWS incorporated into multiple types of combatants vehicles tracked or wheeled the console and layouts are similar to the battlefield computer software games. When it comes to battlefield management communication there are some skills better learned in the virtual environments. Then they can be applied to the practical experience of the real life battlefield. In the modern warfare bravado, zeal and fearlessness do not overcome knowledge, understanding and intelligence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlKmXVXy0k4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NND7Hk5fYdI 2 Likes

Fynline: Baffled beyond reasoning completely bewildered. That's an earlier version of the Ukraine BTR4 it has a RWS not the best. But it also has FLIR and can give you a 100% target acquisition accuracy at even 1.5km and can engage target beyond that with its 30mm. I can not explain it. |
