Pele Reveals Who He Thinks Is The World's Most Complete Player In Football

Pele Reveals Who He Thinks Is The World's Most Complete Player In Football
DANIEL MARLAND in FOOTBALL
Last updated 6:47 PM, Thursday April 23 2020 GMT+1

Pele has named Lionel Messi as the world's most complete player right now and would have loved to play with him.

The former Santos and Brazil superstar named Messi as well as Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar as the three players he thinks are the elite.

But he confesses that his favourite of the trio is Argentina legend Messi.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport per SportStar, the 79-year-old said:

"I think of Leo Messi.
"He is a skilled player, gives assists, passes, scores, dribbles well.

"If we were in the team together, the opponents should worry about two players, not just one!

"Today, Messi is the most complete player."

But the former New York Cosmos man lamented the number of world class players in the modern era in his eyes.

"Once, you found two or three in every country with a great football culture.

"Eusebio, (Antonio) Simoes, (Johan) Cruyff, (Franz) Beckenbauer, (Diego) Maradona, Garrincha, Didi. How many did I say? There were so many."

"Today we have two or three in all. Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, I would say Neymar, who in Brazil has not yet managed to become a great figure."

It could be considered harsh from the three time World Cup winner as young stars such as Kylian Mbappe have burst onto the world stage recently.

"What is missing? Not much. Maybe his heading game, the impulse and the jump. That's what makes us different again because I had a lot of momentum. I was going very high and I scored a lot of headed goals."
Pele has always been a fan of fellow countryman Neymar but the PSG star has had parts of his career marred by controversy over the last few years.

Pele is hoping the 28-year-old can put it all behind him and lead Brazil to World Cup glory in Qatar two years from now.

"I hope that at the next World Cup he is in good physical condition." Pele said.

"People criticise him, I even did it a few times, but we forget that he is a product of ours, of Santos.

"We always want the best for him. I talk about him often with his father.

"Technically, he is an excellent player."

But it won't come as a shock that he would have loved to play with Messi.

Those two in the same team would strike fear into every defence to ever play.

Philippe Coutinho has been handed a lifeline by Barcelona manager Quique Setien in a final bid to salvage his Nou Camp career, according to reports.

The Brazilian playmaker has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League after failing to impress in Spain.

But Setien plans to play Coutinho in the No 8 role in midfield, according to Spanish outlet Marca.

The pair have not worked together as Coutinho was sent out on loan to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich last summer before Setien arrived.

The 27-year-old has regularly been deployed on the left side of a front three where he became known for scoring goals from cutting onto his right foot and curling the ball home.

Setien has also praised Coutinho, who joined Barcelona from Liverpool for £145million in 2018.

'He's a great player and I really like him,' he told RAC 1.

Liverpool's Merseyside rivals Everton are latest club to be linked with a move for Coutinho with Chelsea and Leicester also interested.

Bayern revealed on Friday that Coutinho had a minor operation on his right ankle and will begin his rehabilitation in two weeks.

If at all,

The only 2 players from the list which these 5 could displace are Busquets and Modric.

That's if they could.

So it's not a perfect list, but it's a pretty good one.

No one expected Chelsea to win (apart from Chelsea faithfuls) same way no one expected Barca to bottle a three goal lead vs AS Roma.

The whole world wrote Chelsea off because of the season they were having, but the unimaginable happened..

A few people expected Chelsea to win yes.

But what was so extra ordinary with a Chelsea side 2nd or so in the epl league with players collecting heavy salaries playing 11 versus 11 against barca and doing an upset?

What was so extra ordinary about that, that you had to bring up the subject from the blues and gloat about it on a corona boggling Sunday Morning?

Just so u know, Chelsea finished the season in 6th position.. Andre Villa Boas was sacked midway through the season and a rookie coach (Roberto Di Matteo) was appointed. While Chelsea were struggling that season, they barely managed to scale through the quarters after losing 3-1 to Napoli in the first leg.

In contrast to Chelsea, that Barca side were flying high with Pep and Messi and looked almost unbeatable especially at the Nou camp.

PS: I posted it here yesterday, yestersay made it exactly eight years since Torres handed the knock out punch to Uefalona after Ovrebo had done us dirty before...

Barca got beaten by Getafe, Osasuna and Villareal that season.
Also lost the league title to Real Madrid.
A title we had won 3 times in a row.

Losing to Chelsea wasn't a big deal other than most of you seeing it as a revenge for the Iniesta dagger 3 years earlier in 2009.

As for the Overebo issue, that one has been discussed here extensively over the last 2 months.
I won't waste my time on that.
