He does that in a smart way, cutting off the angles and basically forcing the attacker into a bad choice. He is incredible in 1 vs 1 situations. Committing to the tackle is for guys who aren't confident of their ability to force a striker into a bad position. i can smell your hatred for him all through your post. A good defender requires both abilities.i.e shadowing and tackling.lunging into a tackle all the time is stupid,so is shadowing all the time.shadowing is mostly used to delay the opponent in order to buy time for support as well as cutting passing and to a small extent shooting angle.The best defenders to me are those who decide what they do base on risk and reward. Dijk is very good at shadowing,i don't know much about his tackling though.

I watched Rio at Leeds with Ian Harte, Radebe etc and he has always been average and overhyped. Wes Brown also won trophies and John oshea. Ferdinand rode on the brilliance of vidic.
