Should Pastors Who Commit Adultery Be Permanently Banned From Ministry? John Piper Answers
By Michael Gryboski, Christian Post Reporter| Thursday, April 30, 2020

Notable Bible teacher and DesiringGod.org founder John Piper believes that pastors who committed adultery should be allowed to return to ministry, provided they have engaged in a lengthy period away from church leadership.

In an episode of the “Ask Pastor John” podcast, a listener said her church was considering hiring a pastor who had left his previous congregation because he committed adultery.

“He was caught, repented, and asked for forgiveness. I certainly believe Christ forgives adultery. But from reading the passages on church leaders in the Pastoral Epistles, I don’t see how it could be God’s will for him to continue pastoring. What are your thoughts? Is repentance enough to make this man a leader in another church? And, more generally, what sins — if any — disqualify a pastor for life?” the listener asked.

Piper responded by noting that standards can vary for what can disqualify a pastor for life “because I don’t think the Bible gives a clear instruction about how a disqualified pastor can become qualified again.”

“I don’t think this is the kind of issue where the church as a whole will ever have agreement,” Piper said in the podcast that aired on April 24. “I think every local church should pray and think and study their way through the Scriptures into a position from which the elders can work in unity with regard to these kinds of things.”

Piper said he considered sins like adultery that are committed “after one’s conversion and well into one’s Christian life” to be “more serious indications of unfitness for ministry than our sins prior to the new birth and the new creation in Christ.”

“Adultery after conversion is sinning against the glory of the light of Christ,” he continued. “Before conversion, we were all in spiritual darkness; we were acting according to our nature.”

“The issue is that the offense has been compounded by its deeply multilayered betrayal of God, wife, Christian newness, the Holy Spirit, the people of God, the Gospel, the reputation of the Gospel in the Christian ministry.”

Piper went on to express concern that many churches do not take this seriously enough and warned against being too quick to return someone to ministry who has sinned in such a way.

“He should get another kind of job and go about his life, humbly receiving the discipline and the regular ministries of the church, whether in his former church or in another church,” he concluded.

“If he returns to ministry, it should be after a long time of humble, contented acceptance of a new way of life outside the official ministry of the church.”

A 2016 survey of 1,000 Protestant senior pastors conducted by the Nashville-based LifeWay Research found that around three-quarters of respondents did not believe being caught in adultery justified a permanent ban on ministry.

LifeWay found that 24 percent of pastors supported a permanent ban, while 31 percent supported a temporary ban of at least three months to a year, and 25 percent were unsure.

"The Scripture says pastors must be above reproach," said Ed Stetzer, then executive director of LifeWay Research, in a statement at the time.

“So it's not surprising that some want to see fallen pastors banned from ministry. Still, pastors are also people who talk about forgiveness regularly and, by and large, they want to see those who fall have a chance at restoration.”

How do u Ban who you didn't call?

Immorality of any sort is evil but Banning is not the answer..

Such a Pastor who has fallen should step down for Season.. he should use the Period to make Amends with JESUS CHRIST.. He should Humble himself before GOD and Repent Totally.

After that and in due Season , The Church could reinstate him .

The Will of GOD is that all men should be Saved!

The title "Pastor" is the problem!

In the first century all the Christians see one another as brothers, the only spiritual head is Christ! Matthew 23:8-12

So when Peter denied Jesus (something Jesus himself count as a serious sin) this same Peter continued to lead the Apostles. Even when he fumbled by letting himself to be carried away by the spirit of nepotism, Apostle Paul corrected him.
In all of this, Peter remains one of the 12 Apostles!

So how do we get a balance view?

Sin is what we were born with, this means none of us is perfect except our Lord and Master (Jesus Christ).

Jesus said we should be prepared to assist one another to keep the faith alive in us. Therefore certain measures should be taken to help the brother that has been overwhelmed by the spirit of the world.
But if he resists the help of God's holy spirit, then he must be disfellowshiped no matter his part in the congregation of God!

Nobody has right to permanently ban anybody even scripture didn't support that, the best is to come together to help the person in such situation.

Always deviating from the main point!

If you have problem with the word "Pastor", then change it to ELDER & DEACON

So because they see one another as brothers does it mean there's no LEADER AMONG THEM?

You have problem with the TITLE "PASTOR" but you don't have problem with the TITLE "Governing Body"

What does it mean to Govern?

DIDN'T your GOVERNING BODY see themselves as the SPIRITUAL HEAD of the Watchtower Society?

Didn't this go against your claim that "The ONLY SPIRITUAL HEAD is Christ!

Predictions is the result of dreams or visions.
It's those who takes such utterances serious that should watch themselves.
Anybody can have a nightmare and say he wants to prophesy, that's the more reason why faithful servants of God don't get carried away with religious titles like Pastors, Reverend etc! smiley

The question is "who will ban a man called by God" ?

What OP is proposing is a christian Sharia that may appeal initially to the instinct of many but is damaging in the long run and contrary to God's design.

Pastor only becomes an empty title when faked.
How can a committee of men sit to ban a man called by God to an assignment from that assignment? Has God empowered any human committee to call and un-call his ministers?

Some suggestions only appeal to our ignorant part and aren't worth all these attention. Christianity doesnt need sharia.

God bless you for this statement!

In the first century there is a way to remove unwanted agents from their midst, Jesus laid down the precedence.
Anyone who erred from the order binding them as one family, first step is to speak to an erring one in private, second is to invite two more members of the spiritual family, third is to gather all the members of the congregation to correct the erring one {Matthew 18:15-17} if the erring one still insist he knows better than the congregation as a whole then he must be shunned by all members of the Christian family both home and abroad! 2John 10-11
So he/she is now on his own, he/she can start practicing his/her own form of Christianity by gathering people of his/her kind, nevertheless the congregation of God will not have anything in common regarding sacred service with such a disfellowshiped individual or members of his group!

That's why the first century Christians separate themselves from Apostates without fighting or killing anyone! smiley

Well said my Brother.

But there are things we should note

1. The Fact that we are born with sin does not mean we will continue to sin
2. Peter was Fortunate to have JESUS CHRIST who foresaw what was to come and also gave him the remedy. His fall made Him an Encouragement to others. So to fall is one thing but to Repent After falling is the Main thing.
Luke 22
31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

Sin connotes error or blunder, so God is not provoked to rage when imperfect humans err! Psalms 103:11-14

It's only when imperfect humans ignores or despises correction that God is really provoked!

Jesus referred to all of us as sinners (prone to error) but most people feel they're not, that's why God's grace will not cover such persons. It's only for those who admit their spiritual condition and are willing to make amendments! John 9:41

(1)Did your GB claim to be the spiritual head or not?

(2)You have problem with the Title Pastor, why don't you have problem with the Title Governing Body?

Hypocrite!

(1) NO is the answer to this question, the group name Governing Body simply means the small group overseeing the activities of God's people globally during this end time. Just as the 12 men called Apostles were overseeing the activities of Christians in the first century! Act 2:42
After narrating what will befall the first century Christian group and how their preaching and teaching work will be obstructed by the ruler of the world, Jesus promised that during his return to examine how his followers are faring on earth {Luke 18:8} he will appoint a faithful and discreet slave group that will be overseeing his followers globally! Matthew 24:45
So the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses emerged as that foretold group, that's why they're able to organise people from different races under the heavens, disarm them and made them one big and happy family of peace loving preachers and teachers globally. No other group has been able to do something of that nature! Matthew 19:26

(2) The title "Pastor" has become part of the worldly religious titles people attached to their names to make others give them undue attention {Matthew 23:8} but Governing Body IS NOT A TITLE recognized by outsiders unless some antagonists who wants to criticize Jehovah's people. Unlike churchgoers and other groups that always attach the titles to their names, members of our Governing Body are recognize only within Jehovah's Witnesses. Just as the first century Apostles were recognized only amongst the Christians!

Then this support my claim that you're the very ARGUMENTATIVE PERSON, so why are you passing your delusions to other?

So it was Religion Section of Nairaland that Christ commanded you to go....delusional JWs!

The spirit in True Christians doesn't lie or make false accusations like you commonly exhibit here even that everybody you debate with on Nairaland can quickly pick from you.

You don't know the meaning of Temple in a spiritual sense and to worship in SPIRIT and TRUTH my friend, but let me help you!

The Temple before Jesus came to the earth was situated in Jerusalem, so whoever wants to worship God acceptably must get there {John 4:20-22} but when Jesus began his ministry a Christian becomes God's Temple {1Corinthians 6:19} so people must feel the effect of pure worship in us.
If you're of God's spirit you will love us for upholding pure worship, {Matthew 5:16} but if God's spirit is not operating in you, this is what you'll be looking forward to do. John 17:14
Arguing arguing and arguing against pure worship, you'll finds yourself opposing just one single form of worship when you can't stand up for any, so it will be as if you approve all forms of worship except one! Matthew 10:22; Act 24:5-6 smiley
