That is a misconception. Supermarkets and malls are cheaper. . The luxury stores and brands around the malls are expensive. But manufacturer will give a HUGE discount to supermarket chain...and they will transfer it to consumer. And that is how they become popular. Kenya started about 20yrs this push..and now we are about 40% shopping in formal retails..malls, supermarket..and 60% still doing the nonsense you're talking about...and rate of conversion is high. Even people in rural areas - realize how cheaper it is to shop once in supermarket - than buy small and expensive. vaxx: 2 Likes |

rvp20182:You think shopping in malls is just about buying discount Chinese product at a give away price . it is way more than that. there is this psychological concept of buying more than what you bargain for? hardly can scale of preference works for mall shoppers. because the more you see the more you wanted to buy, and coupled with the discount price, you are 100 percent likely to shop more than an individual who rather cut her coat according to her cloth in open market. 1 Like |

Supermarket the world over are cheaper, more convenient, and almost preferred to your open-air market. Let us just say you're still primitive with quite some advancing to do, in a short time. Formal retail is critical for the advancement of the economy. Ask the South African to help you. Seem you prefer their schools and teachers anyway. vaxx: 2 Likes |

vaxx: No I don't think it is the cost...Things in supermarket are relatively almost thesame price if not lesser than those sold in informal stores... except if the reverse is the case in Kenya I think.it is about the income How many Kenyans can afford to rent a space in a mall with their meagre income. |

rvp20182:The research about Nairobi shoppers indicate majority will rather shop openly rather than malls. And the fact is not far fetched, 60 percent of nairobians are slums dwellers who lives from hand to mouth. shopping in luxury stalls is way above bills for them . Your country can only correct that by improving the living standard of her populace. no sound economics will undervalued informal sector except you analphabetic slowpoke. 1 Like |

vaxx: This is also true..you are tempted to buy more even though you know you are not financially stable for it... because people around you are moving around with filled trolley not empty ones.... No one wants to walk into a mall and come out with a bottle of coke...there is a shame such fellow might feel even though you will barely be noticed.. |

samorobo:it is cost . hardly can budget works for mall shoppers. Though malls are relatively less costly thru out the world but they are also into serious business to dry you up. from promotion ( buy 2 take 1 free) to give away prices ( well discounted prices) this method are there for you to keep buying. it is marketing psychology. 2 Likes |

https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/business/article/2000192043/kenya-has-second-most-developed-retail-sector-in-africa This was 5yrs ago. In comparison to other African markets, Kenya’s formal retail penetration rate, which ranges from 30 per cent to 40 per cent, is the second highest in Sub-Saharan Africa and this places the country at roughly half the level of South Africa, where formal retail is estimated to stand at 60 per cent of overall activity, but twice that of Nigeria.” Now we are surely in 40%. Nigeria is the one at 18-20%. South Africa is 70-80% samorobo: 3 Likes |

Do research first. Both Apapa and TinCan were 1.2M last year or around 1.3M . I.8M include the Nigerian eastern ports- like Port Harcourt. Your fake GDP simply doesn't make sense. South Africa are close to 5M TEUS. One Egyptian port does 3.5M - and the next Egyptian port does 1.6M. --- maybe they have Suez Canal - but still Kenya probably handles 1.5-1.6M for all ports - Nigeria 1.8M - and you claim to be 400B dollar economy - powered by what?? obaaderemi: 1 Like |

Kenya black-owned supermarket malls or supermarket chains - have maybe 500 stores now. South Africa probably have 3000 (if you exclude food stores, cloth stores, etc) - at least Shoprite South Africa has about 1,000 supermarket stores in South Africa - Tuskys, Naivas and Quickmatt each have about 60 something - that is nearly 200 stores - that is Tier 1 in Kenya. We still have Shoprite(SA), Botswana dying thing Choppies, and French CarreFour in "tier' one - few stores but large stores. Karen Carrefour yearly gross maybe 50M dollars sales. Nakumatt is down and out - maybe 2 stores now. Now below that are many small chains. And like Naivas, Tuskys and Quickmatta - these are own by black kenyans. French Carrefour have 7 stores and they are grossing nearly 200M dollars in sales annually https://www.nation.co.ke/business/Carrefour-records-Sh18-7bn-sales-in-Kenya/996-5517414-1rok51z/index.html obaaderemi: 1 Like |

rvp20182:Supermarkets are not always cheaper. But they are always more convenient. The south Africa which you always try to compare doesn't support your idea. There are a lot of stuff which are more expensive in SA supermarkets than buying the same things on open space,or street vendors or even at other small shops. So No,supermarkets are not always cheaper, but they are in most cases more expensive. I really need to teach you a lot on this issue. |
