Functions have to do with the inside, while uses deals with the outside.

Example:

Function of the hand: locomotion
Uses of the hand: to slap, to punch, to lift...etc.

I never saw apple let alone eat it until I was 15, so I agree with you. The book targets the society and the class of pupils in question, I see nothing wrong with it.

Most people who argue here haven't provided a better answer for the use of the head that's relatable to a child in primary 1 or 2.

This explains why these days private schools give children home work that only the parents can solve because they want to form high standard.
