Also be ready to receive letters upon letters. Every time I want to open my post box, I always pray first cos don’t know which letter I will find. What they can easily tell you over the phone, they’d rather send a letter. You also have to be careful when downloading and streaming movies online. Torrents are not allowed. You could decide to download the latest Batman movie from your favorite black market website and think it’s okay. The next week, you’ll receive a letter from Waldorf Frommer, with a bill of €1,500 that you downloaded a movie illegally and they detected it. Yes, they trace your IP address and address the letter to whoever’s name the WiFi is registered to. Many people have gotten in trouble because of this. If you don’t pay, they’ll hand you over to a debt collection agency and take you to court. It is not a joke. You can deny watching the movie but they’ve heard it all before. 62 Likes 7 Shares |

The water is very clean and safe. You can drink tap water and be healthy. The food is also safe and properly regulated. All the people I know who left Germany and went to USA, got so fat within 3 months. I don’t know what Americans put in their food. Meat is very cheap and so is chicken. You can get African food in Afro shops. You can also buy your skincare products there including your favorite bleaching cream. African shops are usually full with people, especially Nigerian and Ghanaian shops. Always loud and arguing. It gives you a feeling of being in Nigeria. Just be careful with sharing your secrets with them. Some people have been deported because of what they told someone, who told someone, who told someone, who told the police. 65 Likes 2 Shares |

Ugoerico: This one too. They can have sex with you and when you want to relax and chill, they throw you out. They’re very direct and blunt. They don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. They expect you to be too. 44 Likes 2 Shares |

As a tenant you have so many rights. Even if you don’t pay rent, they cannot easily throw you out. They’ll have to go to court and you’ll remain there as long as the case is pending. That is why Landlords are very careful with documents before they rent their house to you. You must show your “Schufa”, your bank statements, employment letter or means of income, your salary slips for the last 3 months, sometimes a paper from your previous landlords that you always paid your rent in time and have no housing debts. Court cases are also not beneficial like in the USA. In USA they like to sue. Someone can sue you for Burger and fries and be compensated with millions of dollars. In Germany that’s not the case. Even if you win the case, the compensation is usually very small. Can even be as low as €200. I know a Transgender boy that the doctor damaged his body during surgery. All he got was €1,500 in compensation. He has to live with the damage for life. But don’t be discouraged. Still sue. If you feel discriminated against, sue them. You also don’t curse people anyhow. Verbal insult is a crime. Someone can sue you for calling them “idiot”. They can call the police on you for insulting them. Oh and fighting is not allowed. If you dare raise your hand on anyone, you’re in trouble. It goes into your police record and can affect your chances in the future. Keep your hands to yourself! 44 Likes 1 Share |

Let’s talk about mental health. Loneliness and depression is a real thing when living abroad. Nigerians back home always think “if you can survive in Nigeria, you can survive anywhere”. I’m telling you that is not always the case. I see people say they are not bothered about racism. When you experience it, you will know how bad it is. This is not a case of Yoruba and Igbo vs Hausa. This one is a slow poison that kills you slowly until you have no strength left. You know what it feels like to know that people hate you and don’t want you around? You feel so unwanted and alone. At least in Nigeria you can turn to family and friends. Here you are alone. Nobody to share feelings with. They make you feel like you’re nobody, no matter how hard you work. It messes up your mental health. I’ve seen a lot Nigerian students who are very depressed. Money is there, food is there, but they’re so sad. For every stage in life, there’s a level of suffering that follows it. When you’re hungry, your problem is food. When you have food, your problem could be loneliness. And they affect you equally. You’ll realize that you’re not as strong as you thought you were. You lose self confidence. This is why it helps to be around black people who are doing well. It gives you motivation and builds you confidence. So please, learn about racism before you come here. When you experience it, challenge them. Don’t back down. Don’t smile to make them happy. They don’t care about you. When they say “you’re not like other Africans I’ve met, you’re so nice”, it is not a compliment. That is racism. Don’t let their backhanded compliments fool you. That’s how they control you, by keeping you “nice”. 122 Likes 13 Shares |

I want to ask u 2 questions bro, first, did your debt problem you just described enter Inkasso? 2ndly, when i get Mahnungsbrief from my O2 contract do they also reflect it to Schufa? Cos i do get it often for often paying for 2months(1 month in arrears) instead of monthly. My understanding be say na only when it enters Inkasso that you will be banned from contracts for some years, so i make sure i don't violate the last Mahnung. I must confess i lack financial disciplin, leading me to having always to pay arrears of especially my O2 and atimes Strom. Same happens to my rent cos I fall under the 15th day Lohn and my rent is due latest 5th, so I went and spoke with my Vermieter about that, but who knows what goes into my Schufa in that regards. Any way I think this your Post will make me more conscious. Danielhouston: 1 Like |

Ugoerico: I'm not experienced in this but from what I know. It won't go into Schufa immediately, firstly you receive warnings and when you fail to pay after the warnings, it will be reflected on your Schufa. 6 Likes |

Danielhouston ...I'm moving in in to Berlin for studies!. I got funds but I'm a little confused. I have a partner and would love to travel with him. I know some have advised i go first while he comes later. What you think? Also, is it possible for him to work even as a dependent while I study. I read alot about Berlin and I know life's expensive... hmmm. I haven't even thought about accommodation. In between we both can't speak German.. hardnut right? |

Very fascinating read. And I liked how you handled that guy who tried to turn this into a UK Vs Germany thread. You articulated all you have experienced leaving in Europe in a clear and concise manner. All he wanted to do was criticize without offering a first hand experience to back up his point of view. I like you, you sound like someone I'd be friends with. You mentioned you had a bad credit score rating that reflected bad on your schufa which affected your ease of renting a flat and other services that require a contract. How did you get around this then? As you stated most landlords and service providers can choose not to transact with you due to your low credit score. 22 Likes 3 Shares |

Danielhouston & all other contributors resident in Germany ....if we have more people like you the world will be truelly a blessed one. Thank you all. Am a doctor trained both in Nigeria and a little bit in US too. Currently considering coming to Uni.of gottingen or Bonn or Frankfurt for more studies. However am kind of torn between life after studies in the 3 cities. Had also thought of going to the Netherlands. I did appreciate any suggestions in terms of a better city especially in terms of job as a black African doctor Who wants to lecture or practice medicine, and easy of getting permanent stay afterwards. Thanks for this thread 8 Likes |

janettee: Why are you always sounding like a pessimist? Racism exist in Germany, so what? No country is free from racism and discrimination, just that some are good at hiding it. So spare us with "there is racism" "you will be discriminated" " the people are unfriendly " bullshit. Focus on the good side - positive. And if that is hard for you, then don't comment at all. Because it doesn't make sense to me how you always preach and overemphasize about racism in Germany when we already have the full picture. 1 Like |

Thanks to op,you've done a very great job. I'm studying education related courses currently in Nigeria,I just want to know how easy its going to be after finishing my MSC to secure a job as a teacher/lecturer over there in Berlin. since someone has to practice what they learn. |

Acuna91: Yes there are student jobs available but you’ll require some German language for some jobs. Also depends on the city. Students here usually do menial jobs like washing dishes, working in factory, all these jobs that don’t require you to speak to people. If your German is good, you have a better chance of getting a better job. Yes, it can sustain you. 7 Likes 1 Share |

themaestro08: Lmao, who is this one now?. Overemphsize?, how?, where?. If you are referring to my comment about Bavaria, I wasn't the only one on that thread who said Bavarians are racists, that was my experience there and no I won't sugar coat it so you and others will feel good. You didn't see where I said living in Germany is good abi, you just want to focus on those comments that don't sit well with you. I won't be the one to focus only on the good side, you, a stranger don't get to tell me which side to focus on!. If I want to solely focus on racism I will and you will do nothing about it, get that into your skull. Part of the reason why I like this thread is that op is highlighting both the good and the bad, if it's bothering you, you can choose to ignore!. 28 Likes 1 Share |

Ugoerico: Yes my debt got into Schufa and it’s affecting my chances till today. I cannot rent a flat of my own. My only chance is to rent a room in a shared apartment. Maybe I’ll find a landlord who doesn’t ask for Schufa or settle my debt and my score gets better. Yes, for every Mahnung you receive, your credit score is affected. Even if your bank account is overdrawn, it affects your credit score. It is all registered in your Schufa, but it is not considered a debt. Once you pay it, your score goes up again. What affects your Schufa and doesn’t go away immediately even after you pay is when the company you’re owing, ends your contract or sells your debt off to a debt collection agency. For example: you owe 02 money and they eventually get tired of you and cancel you contract, the next thing is to sue you or sell off your debt to a collector. Your Schufa becomes registered at 500 points, which means you’re a critical risk to any future contracts. Even after you pay it, the information will remain in your Schufa for up to 3-6 years. But your score will go up once you pay. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Margy: No, you cannot travel with him. You’re a student on student visa. You can only invite him over after you arrive and you’d have to prove that you have enough money and accommodation space to take care of him. Hence why he cannot work. You inviting him means you’ll take care of him. Also, Berlin is one of the cheapest cities in Germany. You’d be surprised how cheap it is for a major capital city. The Germans decided to keep it that way. That’s why they always say Berlin is poor but sexy. Only thing that’s getting expensive is housing but now there’s ban on rent increase to prevent it from getting expensive. 12 Likes |

TheManhattan: I live in a shared apartment and the contract is in someone else’s name. Service providers cannot give me contracts. I can only buy with cash. For example, if I wanted to buy the latest iPhone which cost €700 and my Schufa was good, I could get a contract and pay €30 per month until I complete the money. But with a bad score, I can only pay the entire €700. No contracts. 15 Likes 1 Share |

francdec4: You can definitely study in Germany but you’ll require a certain level of German to study medicine. It is also very competitive to get a place. Gottingen has the best medical University of the 3 you mentioned. It’s also a small and very boring city. Almost like a ghost town. In terms of job, you can be assured that German patients will not trust you with their life. You can also open your own praxis here if you can afford it. You can get a job after you study but don’t expect to soar in your career. Alternatively, you can study here and go find a job in another country. Permanent stay comes after a few years of living and working here. You’ll first get a work stay, then you can get a permanent stay after about 5 or 6 years if you meet the requirements. Your years as a student is also counted. 21 Likes 2 Shares |
