Gauteng (literally GOLD) - account for roughly 100B (about 35%) of your economy - and has Joburg, Pretoria. Meanwhile I have seen estimate that Nairobi accounts for as high as 50% of Kenya GDP - roughly 30% in my view. That is roughly 30-45B. So the gap btw Nairobi and Joburg is small.Joburg accounts for 1/3 of Gauteng GDP - or 15% of you national GDP (now 270B) - so we can assume as of today Nairobi has overtaken Joburg GDP
wise...again on a nominal basis (so you don't start long argument about GDP ppp)-- because 15% of 270=45B.

All these are increasingly evident if you look at the pictures of Nairobi and Joburg...the GAP IS NARROWING VERY FAST.

IMF Board most likely to approve Kenya's $750m facility tomorrow. That together with $1 billion from WB should beef up reserves. Reserves have been dependent on foreign debt flows the last few years. Not a good way to build them. In this case, debt immediately goes up by KES 180b
Kenya is trapped.

SA economy and Joburg. Make a clear distinction. Yes Kenya is about 15yrs away from South Africa - but maybe 10yrs if you continue to scre.w up. Btw Nairobi and Joburg - 5-10yrs.

Keep GDP PPP for Azania affairs. Let use nominal GDP. South Africa economy has reduced by 25% since your last heard. The reason - the RAND has dropped dead like a fish out of water.

As of now - this month - Azania GDP is roughly 275B dollars.

Now tell us Gauteng GDP - and then Joburg GDP using that new figure.

Actually use 29-30% of rand depreciation since January this year. What hell is going on in AZANIA. 30% rand depreciation is ZImbwabwe! kind of blow out.

Sorry, fu.c.k that - 32 % - undoubtedly the world worst blow out of a currency. The entire Gauteng SIZE Nominal GDP has evaporated into thin air in just a month. We got nothing to discuss. Your normal GDP has lost 150B - so we are talking 200B dollars nominal GDP smiley. grin grin grin grin

jl115:

Firstly I use GDP ppp as it is more relevant than GDP Nominal as I've explained previously.

Joburg gdp ppp: $120 billion
Nairobi gdp ppp: $45 billion

Gauteng gdp ppp: $280 billion
Kenya gdp ppp:$194 billion

P. S South Africas gdp nominal is $360 billion not $270 billiom

Obaboon, you wish Kenya could provide some misery company in this era! Let's talk Tea - because I own some. 1st Q - production up by whooping 50% (2019 Q1 - 106M - this year 158M ) - so we are talking extra 50M kilos of tea thanks to rain and sun. The price has dropped marginally to Sh223 compared with Sh231 in the previous quarter...that is like 1 cent USD.

I keep telling you kenya is not Nigeria - an OIL-DEPENDANT BACKWATER.

Still I refuse to go down to your frustrated level of name calling. It shows how much you have been frustrated here. grin

Now, let's talk oil and gas, because I have some investment in those. wink

Last year we exported about $40 bn worth of oil and gas. Right now we are about to finish the world's biggest refinery in Lagos. We just completed the world's biggest fertilizer plant.
We are currently losing some money in oil and gas but prices are rising again. grin
That's to show you Nigeria is not a backwater country like Kenya dependent on tea and coffee which fetched you less than $1bn last year and surely will fetch you less this year. I hope you are not jealous. wink

Sorry, but Obaboon kind of rhyme with a Zoogerian- and is very catchy. Obadeeremi sounds like wild vegetables in Kenya. You start insulting people calling them liars - when you cannot hold your ground.

I prefer clean conversation - so lets go with Oba.

Now Oba - Yes Dangote refinery is big news. That will save you at least 10-18B dollars of forex. Lets hope Dangote doesn't play his games - where he takes the market - and jack up the prize. There is no doubt Dangote's wealth will grow - if he can manage to pay up the debts. I think he is now leveraged to the gills. One engineering mistake from the Indians and Chinese - could bring him down.

Now when it comes to Tea & Economy - there is something in economics they call it MULTIPLIER. The manufacturing company has multiplier of 10. Oil industry like Nigeria maybe multiplier of 1 or zero. You don't need that many staff to ship out 100B dollars worth of oil.

Now our tea - provide income to 500,000 small scale tea holders - that is supported by about 100 tea factories - with so many trucks to get them to Mombasa - where is world biggest tea auction - and then they are exported (20% of all exports). We are still doing bulk sales - so hopefully we can move to higher-value chains...and really start selling branded tea all over the world.

What you need are such industries...that is why Indonesia and Malaysia are making more money from Palm Oil than your OIL.

Nigeria is backwater because you've allowed the economy to collapse save for Oil. Oil bring dollars but has very little multiplier...that explain why 140M Nigerians are very poor.

Oba,
Nothing major has changed in Kenya. If we managed last year to pay 6B dollars worth of debt - we surely can continue to pay. Our tea industry doing better than last year.

The only industry suffering is hotel and industry - about 1.5% of the economy - maybe 1.5B dollars.

currency lose value

Exports are cheaper to foreign customers
Imports more expensive.
In the short-term, a devaluation tends to cause inflation, higher growth and increased demand for exports. increased aggregate demand (AD). A devaluation could cause higher economic growth

Improvement in the current account. With exports more competitive and imports more expensive, we should see higher exports and lower imports,

Exports become attractive

Anyway Rand has been recovering very well.whencurrency lose value by 20% that does not mean the gdp has already fallen by 20%

I guess Zimbwabwe missed your memo. Nominal GDP drops with currency. And drops very heavily. And soon the economy center cannot hold and the shit hit the fan.

What is happening - there is serious capital flight out of South Africa..I hope you don't have that much external debt - because you're going to pay heavily.

As for exports and manufacturing - I think Eskom has done the damage there.

I told you why GDP Nominal is outdated and it is for the exact reason you are stating above, short term currency fluctuations don't have a massive impact on the spending, as local prices still stay the same, the Rand is one of the most undervalued currencies in the world and according to the bigmac index should be trading R5.50 to the dollar.

It is due to market exchange fluctuations and cost of living that economist developed GDP ppp as it better represents a countries economic output.

It's very possible that the Rand can appreciate by 30% within days as we've seen in 2017.

Azania is the official name of South Africa (English Name). Malema has promised to rename your country.

Even some in ANC want the name change.

Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa says the name change suggestions will be discussed during the ANC's policy conference in the coming weeks.

The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) is one of the organisations moving that the name be changed to Azania.

It's now outdated because the rand is taking water and sinking.

You see nominal GDP only make sense for North Korea kind of hermitic countries that are not connected internationally. But South Africa at it's level of development and global economy inter-connection - the nominal gdp and ppp - will trail each other. What is going to happen is inflation - will even things - and your GDP PPP will drop similarly.

The problem with GDP PPP - is not the defacto standards or even acceptable- so those PPPs are calculated like once every 15yrs - by some professors - because it's still a concept at infancy - so it lacks the dynamics needed to be taken seriously.

THE USD Is like the health barometer of the global economy. It picks signals faster than Rand or you can cook an excuse - which is why it's trusted.
