Reduce Eyestrain By Utilising These 4 Settings On Your Smartphone by Nobody: 11:02pm On May 06, 2020 |
In the eye clinic, one of the most common complaint I get from patients is: "my eyes feel strained and uncomfortable after looking at my smartphone screen for a while". Eyestrain from prolonged fixation on a screen could be a result of one of several conditions and is usually worsened by sensitivity to light. Feeling uncomfortable or sensitive to light is called photophobia. Most of the modern smartphones available today have settings that could reduce or stop the discomfort that the light from their screens may induce on our eyes. Most of these settings can simply be turned on or off from the smartphone notification bar. Here they are. 1. Reading Mode Reading mode reduces the blue light emitted from the screen of a smartphone making for an experience that is easier on the eyes. It was designed for tasks such as reading pdf or long web pages. Blue light reduces the secretion of melatonin - a hormone that helps regulate sleep and wake cycles. So apart from reducing eyes strain, the reading mode also enables you to easily fall asleep after prolonged use of your smartphone at night. 2. Dark Mode Dark mode simply turns the screen of your smartphone dark and makes the text white. It decreases the amount of white and blue light your eyes are exposed to and increases comfort. At night or in the dark it enables your smartphone screen to match with the background illumination of your environment, enabling your eyes to easily ajust between looking at the phone screen and looking at anything within the environment. Because dark mode also reduces emission of blue light from your smartphone, your sleep would not be affected after using your smartphone at night. Please note that your phone display will still retain it's colour. Only text and backgrounds are affected. 1 Like

3. Greyscale Enabling greyscale simply means to turn the display of your smartphone device to black and white! This has been shown to reduce the problem of eyestrain in several ways. First, it has been found to reduce or even break smartphone addiction. How? You may ask. In nature, bright colours stimulate our interest. Our phone displays are colourful, vibrant and attractive and they keep us fixated. When we eliminate these colours by turning on the greyscale, our interest on using the smartphone diminishes. Less screen time means reduced eyestrain. Secondly, setting your screen to greyscale can keep the eyes from wearing out quickly. It also reduces blue light emission and saves battery life. 4. Automatic Brightness Popularly known as Auto brightness, this setting makes your phone screen brightness to automatically adjust to the illumination of your environment. Under the sun, the phone's screen brightness would automatically adjust to a setting that would enable you see the screen without straining your eyes. In the dark, it adjusts to a dimmer setting that would prevent the screen brightness from causing any major discomfort to your eyes. This is achieved by the use of sensors that detect luminance and adjusts the phone's brightness accordingly. As stated earlier on this article, eyestrain or discomfort could be a symptom of several eye conditions. These smartphone settings will usually alleviate the discomfort or eyestrain associated with prolonged use of a smartphone but should not be a substitute for a comprehensive eye examination. 1 Like
