Israel Wanted to Bomb Algeria - MiG-25 Foxbats and a Well Prepared Air Defence Network Prevented It

During the 1980s the power of the Israeli Defence Force was at its height. The Arab Nationalist Bloc had been shattered by the defection of Egypt to the Western Bloc, and Egypt’s cutting of defence ties with the Soviet Union and ceasing of investment in high end military capabilities eliminated it as a major military competitor. Libya and Iraq, the other two major Arab military powers which had fought in the Yom Kippur War alongside Egypt, were increasingly preoccupied with wars against neighbouring states - Chad and Iran respectively - which again strengthened the Israeli position. Having proven itself a capable military power, and benefitting from powerful lobbies in the U.S itself, Israel had become a leading client for high end American weapons systems - and was the third country in the world only after Iran and the U.S. itself to receive fourth generation fighter jets. Egypt’s provision of many of the latest Soviet weapons systems to the United States for testing meanwhile allowed the Western Bloc to study potential rivals these combat platforms could face, and thus seriously undermined the air defence capabilities of states such as Syria and Iraq which relied on these systems.

The F-15 Eagle, a high end heavyweight air superiority fighter, was Israel’s first fourth generation combat jet, and after spearheading an attack on Syrian air defences in 1982 and winning and overwhelming victory the high endurance fighters would be tasked with neutralising targets much further away from Israel itself. Israel’s longstanding political adversary the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) had relocated its facilities to Northwest Africa, and was attempting to organise anti Israeli activities from there where it would supposedly be immune to possible attacks. The PLO had sought to hold a major congress in 1988, in which it would declare the future of the ‘Palestinian state’ it sought to form, but was warned that such a meeting would come under Israeli attack. As one anonymous Tunisian military source noted that “Initially, the PLO wanted to hold this congress in Baghdad," but due to Iraq's war with Iran, North Africa was considered safer. "However, the Palestinians received a warning that Israel would attack, no matter where the congress took place. Therefore, they picked Algiers. This was considered a safer place.” With Algeria selected to house the congress and accepting to do so, the Israeli Air Force would have to tackle one of the most capable, best armed and best trained Arab militaries - and to do so further from it’s own airfields than it had ever been forced to operate before.

The PLO Congress was held at the Club des Pins Hotel around 20km west of Algiers , and the Algerian Military went to considerable lengths to protect the site from the expected Israeli strike. A no-fly zone within circle of 20 kilometers was established around Club des Pins which was enforced by 2K12 KuB mobile air defence systems - a predecessor to the modern BuK-M2 and BuK-M3 systems. Four combat jets were constantly patrolling the site - at low altitude two MiG-21 fighters and at high altitude two MiG-25 Foxbat interceptors. Additional MiG-25s were kept constantly on alert at their airbases. The MiG-25 was the most capable Soviet combat jet offered for export at the time, and was the fastest combat aircraft in the world. The aircraft were heavier than the F-15s, could fly higher and carried longer ranged missiles. Their R-40 missiles had over five times the payload as the F-15’s AIM-7 Sparrow which made them extremely difficult to evade, although the F-15s did benefit from superior manoeuvrability and climb rates and a more powerful sensor suite. Algeria was the first export client in the world for the MiG-25, and the aircraft was the only one capable of seriously challenging the F-15’s control of the skies. Previous Syrian attempts to engage F-15s with much lighter MiG-23 and MiG-21 jets, which lacked comparable sensors or flight performances and did not deploy any similarly long ranged missiles, had ended in an overwhelming defeat.

On November 10th 1988 a formation of F-15s was detected by Algeria’s air defence network approaching its airspace at medium altitude. More MiG-25s were scrambled to reinforce those already on patrol, but were not vectored to intercept the Israeli jets which were still far too far away. The Algerian interceptors were instead ordered to climb, and take a position in front of incoming fighters - where they would be able to take advantage of their higher altitude ceilings to launch missile attacks. More and more Algerian radar stations were activated and began tracking the approaching Israeli formation. The Israeli F-15s, likely detecting both the presence of a considerable number of Foxbats and multiple radar installations targeting them, followed a radial course and turned back. F-15s taking part in a strike mission against such faraway targets were forced to operate at the limits of their endurance - meaning carrying bulky external fuel tanks which limited manoeuvrability and deploying a minimal payload of air to air missiles. The Eagles were thus in poor shape to take on a heavily armed contingent of much faster and more heavily armed Algerian interceptors. Israel’s limited experience against the Algerian Army in the Yom Kippur War, where they had proven considerable more capable on the ground than their Egyptian or Syrian counterparts, had left a lasting impression which could have contributed to its Air Force’s adoption of a far more cautious stance.

This is what I call Joint operation..
Real time intelligence NAF proved it's worth in collaboration with Niger..
That clip of ISWAP attacking Niger camp..Well this is the End result they paid For it.. God bless MNJTF
In continuation of ongoing offensive operations to inflict more casualties on Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and other coalition members including Air Task Force of Operation LAFIYA DOLE and Nigerien Air Force neutralised about 48 ISWAP fighters and destroyed their camps in a joint air and artillery bombardments executed by the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE in conjunction with Nigerien Air Force and Artillery Regiment of Sector 3 of the MNJTF at Dumba and Location Charlie on the fringes of the Lake Chad in the early hours of yesterday, 5 May 2020.

The joint interdiction missions, which have set the ISWAP elements in disarray, were conducted on the heels of impeccable intelligence reports from multiple sources, including Allied partners, confirming that large numbers of terrorists had assembled in the vicinity of Dumba and had commenced an advance in their vehicles to attack nearby troops’ locations. Consequently, the Air Task Force attack aircraft supported by Nigerien Surveillance platform were scrambled to take out the mobile ISWAP elements at their harbour location, in 2 waves of bomb and rocket strikes leading to the neutralization of several of the terrorists.

Similarly, some ISWAP elements that had attacked a Nigerien Army Base near Diffa in Niger Republic were tracked by Nigerien and then NAF Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft as well as night capable Allied surveillance assets, as they crossed the border in 8 gun trucks to their harbour position at a location code named; Location Charlie within the Islands of the Lake Chad. This location was subsequently interdicted through a joint fire by the artillery of MNJTF Sector 3 (Nigeria) and NAF attack aircraft which resulted in the killing of several terrorists as well as the destruction of their vehicles and equipment as depicted in Battle Damage Assessment clip.

The MNJTF will be unrelenting in the efforts to track and hunt down terrorists groups within the Lake Chad Basin. There will be no hiding place for them. With the support of our strategic partners, the MNJTF will continue to apply both kinetic and non-kinetic means against the terrorists until they are completely degraded.

The MNJTF appreciates the invaluable contributions of our Allied partners and continues to urge the local population to be supportive of the Task Force, to enable the achievement of operational objectives.

BOKO HARAM: NIGERIA’S FEMALE COMBAT PILOTS GO TO WAR
by globalsentinelnews

Flight Lieutenant Kafayat Sanni and her peers of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), are living their dreams as Nigeria’s first female fighter pilots; even as she readies to go and kick asses of some Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP) terrorists in the North East.

The essence of this epochal assignment should not be lost on us; because this mission is a policy milestone that took years of sacrifice, especially on the part of their predecessors, whose unfulfilled professional goals were galvanised to break the hitherto ironclad gender barrier against female officers in the Nigerian military. She and her pioneering colleagues will forever be remembered with nostalgia that once upon a time in the nation’s history, Nigerian military female Pilots delivered payloads of hellfire missiles against the insurgents who have degraded women as a sex object to be kidnapped and held in captivity. But with these female pilots joining the battlefield, is it not time to turn the tables on the insurgents.

It is often said that whatever a man can do, a woman can even do better. Nevertheless, this axiom remained elusive in the combat history of the Nigerian Armed Forces until President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 authorised for the training of female officers on combat missions through admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). Expectedly, this helped to produce a set of 20 female cadets nicknamed ‘Jonathan Queens’ who were admitted into Nigeria’s premier military training institution.

Unfortunately, this huge career leap for female officers and personnel was almost ruined in 2017 when President Muhammadu Buhari in a policy reversal reportedly gave a nod to end the admission of female cadets into the combatant course of the NDA. Buhari and Nigerian military authorities, allegedly came under pressure from some vested interests in the Northern part of Nigeria who were opposed to the idea of female combatants, and ratified the in the National Defence Policy 2017 (Revised); Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service Officers 2017. Consequently, the recommendation 19 of that revised policy was to phase out the training of female combatants in the NDA.

Even though some military sources cited the unacceptable danger and casualties of the female combatants, especially the ground forces, may incur at the hands of the insurgents in the Northeast as the reason for halting the programme, it was however, a major career blow.

Fortunately, there were other routes through which this all important mission for gender equality in the military could be achieved as there were various types of commissions in the Armed Forces namely: Regular Combatant Commission, Short Service Combatant Commission, Direct Regular Commission, Direct Short Service and Executive Commission. It was these veritable loopholes that have enabled the NAF to encourage the training and eventual winging of female pilot combatants that have passed with flying colours.

Therefore, as Sanni and other combat female Pilots have embarked on this national assignment against the terrorists in the North East and any other part of the country as the need arises, they have indeed pioneered a patriotic professional revolution for gender parity in the Armed Forces of Nigeria for generations to come. This is all thanks to the former President Jonathan as well as the gender sensitivity of the incumbent Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

Since assumption of office, the Air Chief Abubakar, has made it a point of legacy mission to upgrade the professionalism and career of female officers in the Nigerian Air Force including churning out of well trained, able and capable combat pilots. To this end, his mission is being accomplished as well as commendably remarkable.

In line with this policy trend, Abubakar had on Tuesday, May 5, 2020, winged another female combat pilot as part of his mission to improve the operational capacity of the Air Force, adding that the 12 pilots winged had their flying training both in Nigeria and abroad having completed the nine months comprehensive flying training programme.

“I am happy that we have among the 12 winged was the second ever female helicopter pilot”, he added, before disclosing that another 26 student pilots are currently undergoing or scheduled to begin basic flying training abroad, out of which two are female officers.

“Upon completion of their training, one would become the second ever female fixed-wing fighter pilot in the NAF, while the other would graduate as the first ever female Qualified Flight Instructor (QFI) in the 56 years history of the Service. We have equally increased capacity for in-country flying training. At the moment, there are also 39 student pilots undergoing various stages of training in NAF flying schools”, he stress.

It will be apt to recall that the NAF on October 15, 2019, made history by decorating Flying Officer Kafayat Sanni, as the first female combat helicopter pilot as well as Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile, and others also known as the “NAF Female Pilots of War’. They are among the six outstanding female fighter pilots who are at the moment, proving their worth in the destruction of a strongholds of the Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in the North East part of the country.

According to reports by PRNigeria and Global Sentinel, some of them are actively involved in degrading the enclaves of terrorists and bandits, especially in North-Eastern Nigeria. While flying Officer Genevieve Nwaogwugwu, Flight Lieutenant Chika Ani, and Flying Officer Olubunmi Ijelu are Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) pilots, Flying Officer Sanni and Flying Officer Arotile are fighter pilots currently serving to restore peace in the region ravaged by insurgency. Flight Lieutenant Blessing Liman is a respected Pilot in the Presidential Air Wing.

Commending this feat, the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information (DOPRI), Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, saluted all the women for what he described as their unique resilience, industry, productivity and commitment to humanity.

According to Daramola, the well trained and adequately equipped Women-of-War are proving their combat bravery and professional gallantry in complementing the efforts of troops in counter-insurgency campaigns and other crisis zones in the country.

He also revealed that the newly winged female helicopter pilot, Flying Officer Chinelo Nwokoye, “is expected to join other female pilots who are currently deployed in different theatres of operation in the country to contribute her quota in the defence of her fatherland”.

Accordingly, with female fighter pilots swelling their ranks with skills, finesse and new perspectives, it would be safe to say that the Nigerian women in General and NAF female officers in particular, have come of age.

This was also acknowledged by the Chief of Training and Operations (CTOP), Air Vice Marshal James Gwani, who noted that the winging of the 12 pilots including the female combat officers, was another milestone achievement by the current NAF administration.

This, he said, would further boost the aircrew disposition of the Service and contribute to fulfilling the constitutional roles of the NAF especially in the series of ongoing air operations across the country. There is no doubt about this because as the saying goes: “the female can even do better”.

CDS COMMENDS NIGERIAN NAVY ON THE PRODUCTION OF SECOND LOCALLY PRODUCED MARITIME CHART

1. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin has commended the Nigerian Navy (NN) for the production of the second locally produced chart of some parts of Nigerian waters by the Nigerian Navy Hydrographic Office (NNHO)

2. In a congratulatory message to the Chief of Naval Staff, officers and ratings of the NNHO, General AG Olonisakin (NAM) expressed profound delight in the fact that the recent products of the NNHO, harbour and operational charts, are certified and recognized by international institutions. He averred that this achievement is coming at a time when the need to utilize indigenous resources has been underscored by recent global events.

3. It could be recalled that the NN recorded a significant operational milestone with the production of the second indigenous navigational chart of some parts of Nigerian waters by the Nigerian Navy Hydrographic Office (NNHO). The new chart covers parts of Badagry Creek, from Ogunkobo, through Navy Town and Mile 2 to Tin-Can Island in Lagos waters. Work on the chart started in 2019. With the completion of the chart, the NNHO has now commenced work on its electronic version which will be forwarded to the International Centre for Electronic Navigational Charts for validation and release.

4. In the last one year, the NNHO has produced a number of nautical products which are currently used by Nigerian Navy ships and establishments. These include harbour chart of Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT and Nigerian Naval Dockyard Limited water fronts, port guide of Lagos harbour and operations charts of the entire Eastern Naval Command. Others are maneuvering sheets for tactical navigation and a number of training charts among others.

5. The International Hydrographic Community, particularly the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO), has acknowledged the strides made by the NN in chart production. Consequently, the UKHO has accepted gradual hand over of the survey data covering Nigerian waters which are held in their archive and also to adopt NNHO’s charts rather than producing new ones. This is a confirmation that NNHO’s nautical products meet international (IHO) standards. The NNHO wishes to maintain this standard to facilitate safety of navigation within Nigerian waters and seamless takeover of the charting functions of Nigerian waters from UKHO.

6. In line with the coordination role of the NN in Hydrography, the NNHO is also currently developing a harmonized Standard Operating Procedures to guide all hydrographic survey activities conducted in Nigerian waters by private survey companies and sister government agencies. This would ensure that data received from any of these survey companies/government agencies are accurate enough to be included in a chart.

Incidentally, do you know who created Hezbollah? It was the same Israel you are talking about.

Masari: For many in Katsina, banditry is the major challenge — NOT COVID-19

Aminu Masari, governor of Katsina, says many people in the state do no see coronavirus as a problem but banditry.

Speaking on Thursday when he received Leo Irabor, chief of defence training and operations, and other senior officers from the defence headquarters, Abuja, Masari said banditry in the state has become overwhelming.

Katsina currently has 95 confirmed cases of the disease.

Masari said suspected bandits have killed more than 50 people in two weeks, while the residents continue to live in fear.

“We sincerely appreciate the efforts of the security agencies in the fight against banditry, but we must also state that the situation has become so overwhelming. We are running out of words to convince our people that we are on top of the situation,” the governor said.

“They are, by the days, loosing confidence in us as their leaders, saddled with the responsibility of securing their lives and properties.

“I am so saddened with the situation we are in now, because to most of our people in the troubled areas, COVID-19 is not even an issue.

“It may have taken over the world and the news about it, but not here. Attacks by armed bandits have have become a daily affair. In about 2 weeks, we have lost more than 50 people. At our own end and within the resources available, we have provided support to the security agencies.

“We even brokered peace through an Amnesty and reconciliatory drive. Some of the bandits repented and joined us in the fight, they were however overpowered by the unrepentant ones who are more sophisticated.

“I am using this opportunity to inform the defense headquarters that our people have started mooting the idea of taking up arms against the bandits no matter the consequences. We are doing our best to stop them and assure them that our security agencies are on top of the situation.”

Your NAF statement is not a statement of fact but of projection. To say cost effective then you have to have a parameter by comparison to make that conclusion. But you have none, what is your inference based on❓

Then the other observation amounts to convoluted overstatement of primary purpose. Particularly with the addition of advanced combat flight training.

This is an overpriced turboprop it's not a combat jet advanced flight trainer. Indeed every aircraft can be used for flight training it's just a question of how you choose to use it..

How long does it take to get a civilian flight licence for a turboprop with the USA FAA. If you have the time and money and depending on your CFI and your own ability two weeks more or less.

This is a forum it's not an academic think tank. Nonetheless, there has to be more than just supposition based on perception.

There should be a substantive definitive base line data that we can underpin our preferences and deductions upon. We should question not accept, we should appraise and balance not just believe.

Otherwise we run the risk of becoming noise making deceitful politicians. And loose the substantive informative core of what the forum should be.

Although not yourself but many take offence at opinions different than thier own. Then get all sanctimonious and acrimonious with infantile vitriolic rhetoric. But why
