Ex-lagos Dep Gov, Other Returnees From UK Stranded At Lagos Airport, Threaten To by Indahosa: 8:23pm On May 08, 2020 |
The 253 Nigerians who were flown into Nigeria from the United Kingdom through the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, were neglected for hours by the Federal Government on Friday. For over six hours, they were left under the sun at the tarmac, waiting for the aircraft that was expected be dispatched by the foreign affairs ministry to convene them to Abuja, where they would be quarantined for 14 days. The stranded returnees included the aged, children, toddlers and few others on wheelchairs. They lamented their neglect by the Foreign Affairs Ministry which they said did not send any official to the airport to receive them. Although the British Airways aircraft that brought them landed at the Lagos airport around 2.45pm, they were left unattended to for six hours. Around 4.30pm, airport authorities took pity on them by serving them bottled water under the sun. Though the plight of the returnees had been attributed to untidy arrangements made by the ministry of foreign affairs, eminent people among the returnees including a one time former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Abiodun Ogunleye, made spirited attempts to contact the minister on phone, but to no avail. The returnees who out of agitation as at 5pm protested their neglect even as they threatened to leave the airport by force while some said they might reject the move to take them to Abuja. According to Ogunleye: “We were not treated badly in UK. Why should we be subjected to ridicule in Nigeria? They just dropped us here at the airport and they said we cannot move. No government official to talk to us. “We have very eminent people here; who are we to talk to now? They said the minister was to make arrangement for us. This arrangement is not tidy. We deserve to be well treated in our country” A journalist, who was among the returnees, said Nigerians returned home only to be exposed to ridicule in their country, saying: “The aircraft that brought us has even loaded to go back to the United Kingdom. We arrived around 1.45pm. It is now 5pm. No official came to us to receive us and give us further directive. @duduade don't be bitter about it. Some left the country for medical purposes, some business, some to visit family. It's not a matter of being a coward. Anyone with the resources could choose to travel out of the country, it's their choice. Some people aren't fortunate enough but, that doesn't mean you should get angry at those who can. And them being ignored is a big eyesore. They weren't treated badly in a foreign country so why should they be treated badly here?? Their planning was not meticulously done and was a big inconvenience for people. 5 Likes |

It's unfortunate, they were no longer used to slow motions work ethics.. They were used to fast paced environment where people knows their duties and responsibilities..and could be asked to account for it ...Now, they have to re-adjust again... 1 Like |

They are all mad. Why did they not remain in UK. You all left Nigeria a bad country to holiday or do business or consult doctors in UK the heaven on it. Why don't you betrayers remain there during this'd pandemic. You all say Nigeria medical facilities are trash but now, you are begging to be attended to by the trash. That was how you saboteurs imported COVID-19 into our beloved country. Your forefathers must be mad. 1 Like |

Each other paid at least 250,000 naira to be repatriated back to Nigeria and this the welcome they get. Trust the Nigerian who loves to defecate and urinate on its citizens at every given opportunity. |

Re: Ex-lagos Dep Gov, Other Returnees From UK Stranded At Lagos Airport, Threaten To by Nobody: 9:17am On May 09, 2020 |
APCNig: Some are students, UK universities are shut till September and the hostels evacuated the students as well so no place to stay hence the need to return. Some may be illegal migrants who have used this opportunity to return back under a fake passport of course because life as an illegal migrants is terrible in the UK, no recourse to public funds, no health care, no job, the UK has made every public service provider an immigration officer so no papers equals no job/house/healthcare and the risk of deportation and being banned for life from the UK. Some probably are dual citizens who are scared of the death rate of black and other ethnic minorities. Black patients are 2-4x most likely to die of COVID-19 than white patients in the UK. There is also the myth that the virus dies in hot weather. Some are probably business men/women who went there for business/holiday etc and are on visitor visas that does not grant them long stay in the UK. 2 Likes |

Had the 250 of them decided to be unruly and disperse in all direction, we might have had a problem on our hands. Clearly somebody didn't make a proper arrangement, or someone messed it up along the line. The buck stops on the minister's table. |

TheAfricaQueen: Thank you for this response. Alot of Nigerians are so bitter that even the rich men who never held any government appointment or got their wealth from government are been crucified for been rich. We rich men feel the say way with the poor in this country. Just that we the rich have privilege to use better facilities or holidaying abroad. We also feel the same way an average Nigerian feel because we pass through all these too but in a different way. So do not crucify us with politicians for been wealthy. |
