Look at your import data first. Otherwise our tea is doing well annually

enya is the WORLD'S LARGEST TEA EXPORTER.

Its share of global tea exports has SURGED from 6% in 1970 to 22% in 2017.

India's tea exports as a % of Kenya's tea exports have PLUNGED from 476% in 1970 to 56% in 2017.

In the last 47 years, Kenya’s tea exports have grown by 1,012%

grin grin 0.5m people being paid below living wages
that is terribly poor

Whiles you can help ingenious citizens set up local manufacturing capacity like it is done in Ghana, SA and Nigeria that reduces reliance on import
This creates a lot of quality jobs and a whole chain of economic subgroups that creates over 4 million jobs in the value chain for citizens.

Import reliance will make Kenyans poor forever
That is how Britain created your economy and it has remained so.

Obaboon,

You're talking trade deficit when you're re-exporting aeroplane parts to spain.

Anyway ignoring usual Nigeria data and talking about Kenya.

First Kenya economy is growing at 6% consistently and with currency stability - we are seeing less and less poverty, jobless.Maybe Trade Deficit is not aware of all this.

And 3rd what is Kenya importing.

1) Fuels - refined oil. We have no option.
2) Machinery and capital goods - these are machines from India and China.
3) Vehicles and related.

We are not importing food that much - we have very small deficit in a few groups. And that we fill locally.

We are the only country in Africa that is doing 50-50 trade with Africa. Most of African backwater like Nigeria are doing 95% trade outside Africa...you cannot even trade with Benin except for illegal rice.

So you see - we don't need to worry about dollars - when we are importing maize or cheap Tanzania maize. That is 50% of our trade. We do it with KSHS...which is like the gold standard for the region.

Now because we mostly importing capital goods - machinery and vehicles - and fuel - we are powering our economy,

Which obabaoon explain why KENYA IS DOING VERY well without any minerals or oil or gold or even RAIN.

Stop lying, you are not importing high end products but trash to fill your bellies with. Continue with your angry name calling and let me continue to hammer your bald head with facts. grin
Kenya is doing badly because of those trade deficits. You are doing 50- 50 trade within Africa on agricultural products while your own farmers and youths are jobless and Tanzanian and Ugandan farmers are smiling to the bank. How much more silly can you be? This is a familiar scenario in Kenya:
A young poultry farmer recently got everyone
talking on Facebook. She was distraught and
desperately sought assistance on where to sell
her eggs.
Having gone through the tedious and
challenging task of raising her layers
successfully, she was stuck at the last stop on
her long journey: sales.
She could not get a market and had been
reduced to hopelessly staring at her daily
production of 2,000 eggs, with no clue as to
where she could sell them profitably.
The eggs kept piling up as was confirmed by
the images she posted on social media.
Having approached supermarkets, hotels and
restaurants, in vain, she was dismayed to find
loads of trays from a neighbouring country
retailing for as low as Ksh200 per tray, a price
she could not match, if she was to make any
profit
.

We only would be worried if we're importing using forex like USD but regional trade - we are fine. We have positive trade balance with most of the African countries. Let Uganda and Tanzania do maize, eggs and etc. And we will do high-value crops. The main reason Nigeria is very poor is that you don't do basics like regional trade. Now if our trade deficit is 10B - and half it is within Africa - we are fine - and you can come get dollars in Nairobi any day.

Of course, we want to export - but haven't even scratched the domestic market in many things - and then the regional market.

You don't climb a tree from the top.

As of now - no importer in Kenya has ever lacked dollars the last 30yrs.

Except im not talking about system losses

Im referring to loss of generation capacity because of maintenance grin

Secondly I'm referring to to the fastest energy demand growth in the whole of Africa.

grin grin

Ghana has not paid for excess capacity since 2018

Kenya's lack of generation capacity and dilapidated power infrastructure is what is making Kenya power run into huge debt.

WHy would Kenya be so dumb to build Pylon on watercourses such that a whole pylon collapsed ?
rvp2018:
Hobbit, these things are already worked out. I think recommended idle or excess capacity everywhere to deal with such issues is around 10% - and system losses maybe another 10% - Not 50%.

As for your politics - here is more politics.
With capacity that’s almost double the country’s peak demand needs, Ghana’s electricity utility has to pay independent producers about $450 million every year for energy that it doesn’t need or use. This adds to the sector’s liabilities, which are the biggest debt threat to a nation that seven months ago completed its 16th bailout program with the International Monetary Fund.

I told you clearly that excess capacity when you're consuming 2,700mw would be something like 300Mw. You'd be happy with 3000MW. But to have 2,000MW excess capacity is beyond crazy. That is why you're spending money enough to finance half Rwanda budget on excess capacity charge - just flushing money down the toilet.

Basically, Kenyans grow what they dont eat grin grin

Just like how Britain discouraged their colonies from investing in their manufacturing capacity so that Britain can supply them with manufactured goods.

Today, if you see any building in Kenya that have huge pillars and colons

It is as a result of the Cement glut of Britain in the 40s to 70s.
obaaderemi:
If you think name calling and childish insults will save you from me, think again. wink

Now, let me quickly teach you what you don't understand about your trade deficits.
Sane Kenyans are complaining about your ridiculous trade deficits but Obviously you are not one of those who are sane.
The trade deficits are the reason why you are mostly jobless in Kenya.
It reflects the fact that you import basic stuff you can make yourself. Your staples for example, maize and vegetable oil are imported. Your farmers are encouraged by IMF to plant tea and other cash crops while your people starve. What's wrong with growing food crops to feed your starving people? Look at what Nigeria did with rice and cassava.
Now your agriculture is suffering due to droughts and locusts. Even prices are falling for tea and demand is down.
Your tourism is suffering due to alshabab attacks. You now rely on remittances from Uganda and other countries as sources of forex and yet you claim not to have a forex problem. grin

I wonder how you are still surviving in Kenya. I guess the answer are the Chinese loans.
You claim to have a robust domestic market but retail and trade are struggling. Stores are closing furiously. Examples are nakumatt and uchumi. Your retail sector is worth anything from $15bn to $25bn. Even Ghana with 30m people does better.
Those deficits are the reason you are jobless. Winter is coming and you need to get your ass away from nairaland and make yourself useful. All hands in Kenya should be on deck now. grin

China is the largest producer - produces about 2.8M mt compared to kenya 0.5M metric tonnes. But China consumes most of their tea. They export only 0.3M tonnes of tea.Kenya consumes 10% and we export 0.45M - and we are world leaders!

In December the China Tea Marketing Association estimated that China will export 330,000 metric tons of the 2.8 million tons of tea it produced in 2018. Chinese tea exports, mainly green, were valued at more than $1.5 billion in 2018, rising 10.41 percent year-on-year, according to the association

Kenyans are losing their jobs on a daily basis in the thousands, joining the already millions that are unemployed and living in slums that abound

The kshs is not stable, it is one of the reasons why the Kenyan government has found itself in a huge debt trap.

of course importing 18 billion dollars of goods from China and reselling them will give you economic growth except for the fact that it will leave
your economy poor and jobless. This is one of the reason why every election year, those hopeless jobless Kenyans kill each other and have to depend on UN intervention
