Exactly! Maybe Tom is meant to be a DM, but for United, we don't have a traditional DM unless Matic plays as he does not have the energy to take advanced positions during play and still fall back. From watching our matches, I already know that when both Fred and Tom plays, one takes the left side of the midfield and the other the right side. Both take turns to cover the center too when needed. That's why I don't see them as a Dm especially when you look at how Carrick and co play DM back then.

Nowadays sef I feel position on the field is scam. I believe people should pay attention to roles more. Your position may say DM but during the match your role is not exactly that. Just look at them saying Pogba played DM

Fred and McTominay = Pure double pivot essentially with Fred covering the left and McTominay covering the right. However in more than half of the games together heat map shows Fred more active in slightly more defensive positions while McTominay more active in slightly more offensive positions.
In many of the games it is just too difficult to tell. In double pivot you usually have 2 CDMs and not the obvious division of labour you might see in a 4-3-3 with DM, CM, AM.

This is why the same whoscored that said McTominay played DM 19 times and CM 3 times also says Fred played DM 21 and CM 6 times, and Pogba played DM 8 times and 2 sub appearances with 0 appearance as CM.
Essentially saying all of them played mainly DM this season and CM very few times.

Right. The role is often shared, with one player leaning more to CM than DM and vice versa.

Sometimes during a match even Pogba assumes the DM position and tries to build from the back, especially when playing with McTom.

Whenever Fred plays, he is almost always the DM and Matic is always DM.

Central midfielder- he can play CM also, and often does that whenever Matic is playing.

Defensive midfielder- he plays this position for country and also whenever Matic is not playing.

Yes, to some extent because most CM usually drop deep

Pep's Barca had Busquet and Xavi, but Xavi dictates the play and most definitly has more passes than Busquet
Same with Rodri and Gundogan, Henderson and Fabinho

Not all DMs have more passes than CMs, some CMs drop deep to pick the ball. If Pogba drops deep to pick the ball and orchestrate play, it doesn't mean Pogba is playing DM. In Liverpool, Fabinho is the DM but you often see Henderson dropping deep to pick the ball but Wijnaldum rarely drops deep to pick the ball and both of them are CMs...

Exactly, even Pep's Barcelona, Xavi CM always had more passes than Busquets the DM. Not all DMs are passers. Kante and Matic under Conte, Matic played deeper than Kante but Kante had more interceptions and general defensive stats, so it depends on the system.
