In January, I was having an admission interview via Skype. Internet fuvked up. Interviewer had to ask me to send my mobile number and called me directly
Predstan:

A friend was trying to do DET online as a replacement to the TOEFL test as requested by the school. Even with 3 attempts, internet bleeped him up. Its either he couldn't submit and upload after completion or that while taking the test, the speed runs as low as 500kb per sec. If anyone tries that with graduate school, Na OYO ooo. Lol.
Even with my 190mb per sec internet, zoom still buffers.

Sir, many factors may account for this relatively low confirmed cases and death toll.

First off, how quick were they to respond to this outbreak? In answer to this question, South Africa responded quickly. How aggressive is their testing and other containment measures? South Africa responded with even a mobile testing kit, in less than 3 weeks or so they already had 67 testing centres (sincerely speaking Nigeria was having less than 11 testing centres then-Africa most populous nation). In terms of lockdown, South Africa was extremely strict in this regard.

And what’s the impact of all these? Is that you don’t allow people who have contracted the virus to keep spreading it. That’s being proactive

Time will come Nigeria Government might just be overwhelmed with the control of a horrible major outbreak that might be looming ahead...

President Trump has been bragging lately that America has the largest testing capacity than any other country in the world, a critical analyst asks at what time did you achieve this? South Korea achieve theirs at the beginning of the outbreak-that’s being proactive

There’s no magic anywhere, if you respond late you’re giving people the chance to spread the virus...

100% correct boss.

I know the USA is not doing good but still, they have the highest number of tests in the world. I was at the testing centre a week ago and i can tell you, its a drive through centre. Anyone can go in and do the test. Currently, America has close to 7 million tested samples with close to 1.5million cases.

If any country tests as much as the USA, they will have as many cases as the USA. Radical testing will unveil more cases of the virus.
Taking the Uk as an example, The Uk hits 100k daily testing on the first of May, what happened to the cases, an increased number of confirmed patients, and an increased number of death tolls. I implore you to go check out France.

Now going back to Africa, Senegal, Ghana and South Africa including Rwanda were able to carry out radical testing that is relative to their population, yet the confirmed cases haven't so increased compared to the rates it has in the European countries.

I will implore you to base your analysis on the number of tests and repeated tests carried out in these countries, you will realize what I'm trying to say. Europe as a continent with only 700million people have the highest number of deaths officially recorded than any other continent.

Trump is a case but we can't underrate the efforts they have put against this virus because of one Clown.

Insightful! A different perspective, I love your analysis.

CoVid 19 is a brand new strain virus... we are still learning

In all, is the travel rate to Africa as high as the rate to Europe or America? There are still many factors that may account for the discrepancies...

There’s a reason why New York is worst hit in US...

That's another thing. But again, the recovery rate in Africa is around 35% and that of America as a continent is around 23%.

Shout out to all the GAs/RAs/TAs in the house. If you know you were a GA and didn’t do any work, please answer present here.

In my own case, they just had excess money to share without any work to do.

The only assignment we had in the first year was to create a LinkedIn page for a fund we were managing. Six of us was assigned to that fund. Na so so meeting the supervisor sabi call, nothing to achieve thereafter. Total hours of work is less than 6.

Second year, did nothing. Total hours was less than 5 for the entire academic year. I’ll send my supervisor a thank you mail after our contract ends later this month.

Hmmmm
I would really love to know how to apply for GA
Would you be kind enough to share some tips
Thanks.

New york I will say it down to public transport. Cities that have good public transportation with a good number of passengers using it, usually will get hit the most. Good information for the wrong thread.

I see we have many analysts here, all eager to flex their knowledge - which I, as a Public health professional, find baseless and shallow, save a few.

Previous vaccine boosts our immunity against COVID19? shocked

What evidence do you have? This is as crazy as it sounds!

Please, leave science for scientists. Leave healthcare for healthcare professionals.

And again, this is a thread for intending students. Let them discuss everything that pertains to their educational ambitions, not your wild assumptions or sickening pessimism.

I know you want them to face the reality. They will, in their own way.

Carry your analysis and start a blog or podcast. Invite people from here if you want.

Ciao!

Mortality rate in US is like 5% while Nigeria has 3% (with many mysterious deaths that are not counted as CoVid 19 cases)

That's for the reported cases. Scientists believe more than 90% of cases are not detected
The actual mortality rate is much lower especially for under 70 age groups.

See this antibody test conducted in Spain for instance (Antibody tests show that many do beat the virus and develop immunity without even knowing): For under 40s, mortality rate is at worst 0.022%.

You only had to read the info on the link yourself bro.

Did they say that TB Vaccine is effective against covid? Did they say that they have evidence that IT PROTECTS against covid?

What evidence did they give? Assumptions!

If it were to be effective, why are people still going down with it in places where routine immunization is followed religiously?

Vaccines boost the immune system against specific pathogens. May I also remind you that covid is novel?

Why are you doing this bros?

Please can we just go back to the subject of this thread? Thanks.

"In controlled studies, it has been shown that BCG can indeed protect against viral respiratory infections. BCG stimulates innate immunity, and this can be used to build a defense against viral respiratory infections"

This is from the article. And if you google 'bcg covid 19' you will see more studies. Some hospitals even gave it to their health workers as a precaution.
I am not saying that I am sure it works but you called it crazy without bothering to read more about it.

Yea Power outages hmmm sad

Nigeria tho

sonofakin:
Well, Canada is immigration friendly so it understandable that they are making such modifications. I'm not expecting any real change from Trump tbh. However, I know a lot of schools are already offering online classes. I'm sure even funded students would have to pay for such online classes since their funding wouldn't have been activated yet.
I don't think one should consider it anyway, deferal should be the option. Imagine power outages that happen for days and one not being able to power phones and computers and then finding it difficult to meet deadlines, quality and cost of internet is another thing to consider. Overall, one can't even get the whole graduate school experience, especially research students that have laboratory works too

Hi guys! I hope I’m in the right thread for this question below:

*Please, it’s urgent*

Can I use someone who’s not related to me as a sponsor? If yes, how can I prove it? What documents do I need to provide?

Someone told me to use the person as my maternal uncle. Can I do that? If yes, what documents do I need?

What other options do I have

Please, I need help to get my I-20.

Thanks in anticipation

Hello everyone.

I am interested in applying for PhD program at the University of Florida, Gainsville. I wrote my department graduate co-ordinator as regards securing graduate assistantship.

She replied: "The program will allow you to conduct research and assist in the classroom without compensation."

Although, It is clearly written on the department website that:

"If awarded an assistantship, a graduate student will receive a 1/3-time appointment of $16,000/year (M.S.) or $20,000/year (Ph.D.). The assistantship will cover in-state and out-of-state tuition. However, students must pay non-matriculation fees".

Please, I still don't understand the above statements. I need your contributions and opinions.

Thanks.

It is not yet peer-reviewed but they are investigations on BCG vaccine taken in childhood and if it had helped or is helping in lowering susceptibility to covid because both(TB & Covid) are actually respiratory illnesses and they are seeing a very low transmission rate in Africa...It is actually being investigated but it is not a fact

Hello house, been going through some this thread for sometime and I must confess, it has been very educative.
Let me go straight to the point, I am a final year student studying electrical engineering and I intend going for my masters immediately after my undergrad as I am interested in research in area of wireless networks and security which I am also undergoing my final year project on. My GPA has been good over the years and I hope to graduate with a first class by the grace of God. I have started researching on schools but I will like to get insights on some schools that would be recommended by the senior ones in the house also like to know people that have had similar interests.

I agree with your line of reasoning.

This is really scary but I still think there is hope. I still maintain that there is no country in the world that can beat the U.S. in terms of post-studies job opportunities. Trump will come and go, so I would think long term prospects in my decision making. The role international students play in reasearch, development and innovation in the U.S. are well-documented. So, my guess is that DT may not completely ban OPT, CPT and H1B completely but he may radically restrict it. I think the US would have taken a page from UK's book by now.

Indians and Chinese students currently bear the brunt because they are overreprented, but if DT makes good his promise of implementing a point system like Canada, Indians may come up on top, but I can't say the same for China due to the current anti-Chinese rhetorics.

I think PhD students may be safe because the last time I checked, they are not taking any jobs away from Americans. CS/ECE majors are also heavily in demand by the tech giants and start-ups alike and U.S. citizens/PR alone can't fill those jobs. Manufacturing companies operating in rural areas too frequently need international students since young Americans are too picky to live there so other Engineering graduate students may still be needed.

While I can't predict how challenging or easy it would be for those currently in Nigeria to make it to the US, if I were to come at this point, I would ensure that I'm coming for programs with high job placement rates for international students, and have other solid back up plans. Before COVID, employment for international students was competitive, and post-COVID, it might even be more duanting.

You've made great points especially regarding the strength the US has in research and the corporate world. However, there are other countries that offer similar post-studies job opportunities but considering the long route to the citizenship via postgraduate studies in the US, rhetoric by Donald Trump and general anti-immigration atmosphere, the United States is becoming increasingly unattractive.
