Ausrichie: And why is the service horrible...because the power sector has been straved of money for a long time. Corruption makes the matter worse. Add the fact that in the 1980's and 90's, many stantes expanded power supply to many parts of the country without a thought about how it should be paid for. Plus, many Nigerians don't pay their bills. I should add many government agencies and private agencies do not pay their bills either. That was true under the days of NEPA, then PHCN and now privatisation. See, I am typing this from my working place. In 2003...I would have to go to an internet cafe, pay N200 for two hours to type this stuff I am typing. And the reason why I can type this is that GSM companies were allowed to set their prices, and we had to pay their prices (and it was a lot of money, I tell ya.)....and all the benefits we have from GSM...home interent, ability to make all sorts of phone calls...including international calls (when I was very young...if you wanted to call abroad, you had to go to the nearest NITEL exchange and wait in a queue)...are as a result of people paying the bills to the GSM companies...high or not. If you want service to improve, pay your power bills. I paid estimated bills for a while myself, and yes, it pained my wallet atimes. I still pay power bills. But because most Nigerians don't pay, the pressure falls on those of us who do pay. And most who don;t pay claim poor service. Where do they expect the DISCOS to get the money to make things better?? From the Great Magic Tree in the Sahara? If you were a businessman and people did not pay for your goods and services because 'they think you are cheating them' when you need to make a profit to pay workers and expand your business...how do you expect your business to thrive? How do you expect DISCOS to make improvements when you are not paying them to do so on the excuse of 'bad service'? Why didn't you talk when government asked people to say if they were opposed to privatisation? 4 Likes |

Ethanegos: 1.They did invest their money, which is why some areas have improvement. But the truth is, the money is going to come out of our pockets. That's why it is called privatisiation...the businessmen who bought the DISCOS and the GENCOS invested in them BECAUSE they wanted to make back their money and more. That's how capitalism works....and if you were a business owner, you would know that. 2.And anyway, the laws governing their setup hobbled them from the start. They were not allowed to set the prices for power...government stills ets them, and at a cost of 30% of the actual cost. That means banks and other lending agencies won't lend to them because they can;t expect their money back (meanwhile, with GSM, where you cannot use a phone without paying, and where cheat codes are blocked as soon as possible, banks comfortably lend to them GSM companies). Add the fact that many Nigerians won't pay (and even when meters are installed...they get bypassed in many instances)...and you see why the power sector is hobbled for cash. You are expecting the power sector to treat you like a rich man spending money on a mistress. Well, life does not work that way. 2 Likes |

I had my apartment disconnected (on request) since last year September (because of extra crazy billing), while waiting for approval to pay for prepaid meter. No approval as at the time of typing this. It requires a great deal of understanding not to be hostile toward these PHCN foot soldiers. I was so irritated by ikeja electric billing madness that I have never for once regretted getting disconnected since last year. Nevertheless, consumers should know where to direct their anger. Beating up those guys while discharging thier lawful duty is irresponsible; violence isn't justice. If you don't like their service, opt out. Electricity is not oxygen. 5 Likes |

The op that posted this no do well at all. Those people made a very big mistake by posting this on the internet. It is a good thing that those PHCN leaches were dealt with but posting it on the internet is a big mistske. Las las, that lady and the others will be fished out, prosecuted and jailed. If not, PHCN people will lose a lot of face. I can bet with my eyes. |

kamez:It's indeed foolishness and stu pidity of the highest order because IKDC or EKDC will just come back and remove the G&P and the next several months up to even a year, that area will not have light, because of d st upidity of a woman and few guys. These same people will then have to beg, write letters and be forced to pay for the treatment cost of the beat-up officials in addition to other made up damages. In addition Ikdc will also insist that at least half of the arrears of all electricity users in that area be paid before reconnection. This will run into several thousands per each compound. What is a N5000 bill compared to a year without power,if even for 4hrs a day, then at least 10times that 5k to also be paid by these same people that beat the officials? So long the government, being irresponsible didn't give a directive that disconnection of customers be suspended till this Covid is over,as other sane countries are doing, the electricity companies have a right to go after their money. Re: Lady Beats Up Staff Disconnecting Electricity Amid Lockdown by Nobody: 12:58pm On May 20, 2020 |
Jaqenhghar: By your reasoning, no one should pay any businessman anywhere in the world for anything.... The thing is, if we refuse to pay DISCOS their bills, then they won't be able to make improvements, and pay their staff and their suppliers, which means a lot of ordinary Nigerians also suffer as well. They also won't be able to expand their businesses, which means no new jobs, which means a lot of Nigerians suffer. They also won't be able to indirectly pay financial instituions, which means losses, which means no jobs too And since they can't pay for improved power, jobs are not created, meaning more Nigerians suffer. You see the problem. I would very much like Nigeria to be a socialst people's republic, but the problem is, at the end of the day, people have to be paid, and if they are not paid, what's the use of political fantasies. Yes, our leaders stole.....but in the meantime, people still need to be paid for their work. 3 Likes |

Re: Lady Beats Up Staff Disconnecting Electricity Amid Lockdown by Nobody: 1:04pm On May 20, 2020 |
codedguy1: NEPA and PHCN were government run. DISCOS and GENCOS are largely private companines, with transmission still government run (under the Transmission company of Nigeria). 1 Like |

kikero: By your reasoning businessmen are allowed to take people's money without giving them services because they want to expand. How long will people keep paying them before they get their shít together? This is not socialism. Its common sense. You go to MacDonald to buy a burger. They collect your money and refuse to give you the burger then ask you to pay again to get your burger ..and keep paying saying they will use the money to prepare your burger. ..... and you shouldnt protest. Does that make sense to you? |
Re: Lady Beats Up Staff Disconnecting Electricity Amid Lockdown by Nobody: 1:18pm On May 20, 2020 |
Jaqenhghar: Well, considering that many Nigerians and their government agencies etc don't pay their bills, how do you expect the power companies to make improvements to power.(And consider that this problem has been there right from the days of NEPA). Plus the laws governing DISCOS and GEncos put the price setting in the hands of government. At least Mc Donalds has the power to set its own prices, and does not suffer the problem of up to 50% of its clientelle not paying. So why won't they give you what you asked for?? Meanwhile in Nigeria, payment compliance for some DISCOS is less than 50% in some areas. Prepaid meters get bypassed where installed...so they aren't really a solution. You are expecting DISCOS and GENCOS to supply power for free. That's not how it works. You won't expect to work for only half your salary, would you? Under those circumstances you won't give your best. 3 Likes |
