Rangers’ Aribo needs time to adjust to African football – Super Eagles legend Taribo West

Despite top-notch performances from the 23-year-old for the West Africans, the ex-international feels the midfielder has not done enough.

Former Nigeria international Taribo West believes Rangers star Joe Aribo needs time to adjust to the playing style of African football.

The 23-year-old made an impressive start to his Super Eagles career when he scored on his debut against Ukraine in September 2019.

He followed that up with another impressive performance a month later in another friendly against Brazil, helping Gernot Rohr’s men clinch a 1-1 draw against the five-time world champions.

Aribo has now made four appearances for the three-time African champions and has been praised for his immediate impact with the national team by fans and former internationals.

West, however, feels the midfielder has not done enough and believes Getafe’s midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo, who is currently on loan from Stoke City to reignite his career, will perform better than him.

"I've watched Joe Aribo play for Nigeria, but in my view, it's clear he is yet to come to terms with it,” Taribo was quoted as saying by the Scottish Sun.

"There's no other way of putting this - I think Joe is not a bad player, but he needs time to adjust to African football.

"It's not the same as playing in Europe. In Africa, there's no time on the ball and for me, Oghenekaro Etebo is a far better option, He's quick, physical and reads the game.

"He should get Joe Aribo's spot when he comes back. African football is just too physical for Joe."

Besides his scintillating displays for the Super Eagles, Aribo has been delivering fine performances for Rangers under Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

The midfielder, who joined the Ibrox Stadium outfit last summer, was a key member of the Gers in the recently-concluded campaign, scoring eight goals and providing eight assists in 45 appearances.

Taribo retired from international duty in 2005, thus, ending his 11-year career with the Super Eagles and enjoyed success during his time.

He was part of Nigeria’s gold-medal winning team at the 1996 Olympics and also helped the Super Eagles finish as runners-up in the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations.

The centre-back, who had 42 caps for the three-time African champions, played in the 1998 World Cup in France as well as the 2002 edition.

Taribo, now a pastor, also starred for InterMilan, AC Milan, Auxerre and Plymouth Argyle among others before he quit professional football in 2008.

These things have to do with feelings, a lot of people here have denounced their biological fathers/mothers and stuck with foster parents and adopted another state or people. If i was brought up as dutch, heard little or nothing about Nigeria or probably loathe all i have heard and just went about how to survive and after some measure of success, someone just called from the blues and i said i should come and represent the country. It could be very hard to honour it, even if its going to help my career...We need to respect the deep feelings involved..some might have struggled with the rejection over the years and have just gotten over it

I don't prefer Etebo.

He hugs on to the ball for a longer period of time, loosing possession in dangerous places where a simple pass would suffice instead of an unnecessary show of strength. I might pick Azeez ahead of Etebo even.

Some things are a business decision, feelings are cute, but business decisions are cuter.

People use all their life's savings to travel out of this country, to nations they know little of, in search of a better life. They leave behind the families they know, and proceed to a land unknown and most of the time, uncertain futures, in search of greener pastures that they may not even find eventually. You think they don't have feelings? undecided

Business decision. Their feelings are not a priority.

Depending on the trajectory your life/career is taking, some decisions have nothing to do with your feelings and that is what some of these boys know nothing of- the business of football.

Boys make decisions based on feelings, men make decisions based on realities.

Quite recently people were questioning the validity of MRI in determining age All because Ndidi is involved.

IMO if the man is from a underprivileged background that will most likely equate to being malnourished and therefore stunted growth which means his bones will not have fused.

He may still pass the MRI.

I can see you are still running around with your MRI ideology. To start with, stunted growth will come from early fusion of the plates, not late fusion. It is fusing of bones that stops growth. Not the other way around.

The MRI scan has a high degree of accuracy. Meaning it is very hard for old players to pass the test. So our pool of players who passed the test at a young age, have a high chance of being truly young.

The only issue is that some young players can fail the test. That does not mean we are not satisfied with it.

I see some people defending the Finisher Billing.

My point is simple, what happens to decency? What happens to, I am flattered with the idea of Nigeria wanting me but I have nursed the ambition to represent Denmark since I was a child. I want to represent Denmark because of my childhood passion.

What kind of crap is that I don't feel Nigerian? I bet you, if England calls him, he will jump at it. I guess even though he was raised in Denmark, he will feel English.

What crap is, I have Danish Mum and siblings, only Nigerian father? He has the right not to feel Nigerian but the decency should come first.

What happens to I have a passion for Denmark, even though I have a Nigerian origin? I heard Nigerians are wonderful people and it is a nice place. It would be nice to represent them but I made up my mind a long time ago to play for Denmark. I intend to continue to fight for my shirt in the Danish National Team until it comes true.

No one will feel bad or end up in Finland.

It seems these guys feel thrashing Nigeria, somehow proves their loyalty to their home countries.

Trashing African countries is a fad, it makes them feel cool. Diaspora Nigerians love to trash the country, maybe, to get approval from all their abroad friends, or identify with their abroad people

The only time they are proud to identify as Nigerian, is when they wish to disassociate themselves from the other blacks without 'roots', but for the most part, they are ashamed of their Nigerian roots, and will turn their noses up at the country.

Na the papa I blame, may I never birth any bastard child, that will use my country of birth to catch cruise.

If Taribo is complaining about Aribo, what will he say about Ejaria who left Rangers because he couldn't cope with the physicality of the SPL & insults from Rangers fans. Aribo adds bite to the team offensively, quick movement of the ball from defence to attack. The type that Iwobi always enjoy in one-two quick touches. whilst Etebo doesn't offer that. Etebo is constantly enroaching Ndidi's space in midfield and being a jack of all trade. He's got his strength no doubt but Aribo doesn't need to be physical, he only needs to control or manage effectively his space in central midfield. In the said matches (Benin & Lesotho), he still had his brilliant movements up & down the pitch and almost scored against Benin if not for the brilliance of the goalkeeper.

Imagine a situation where our National U17 team went for an international reputation in Europe.

And they were all offered juicy contracts in high paying football clubs. But the proviso was that the must change allegiance to different European nations.

My estimation is that 50% will change allegation there and then.

LOL

Yet we get angry with players who have zero affinity with Nigeria and are even mixed race with little input from thier Nigerian Fathers in thier lives.

I don't even know what they want to use him for.

Rohr just dey do like babe wey go buy okirika, those ones that will just carry an arm full of clothes, and hope there are some good picks out of the bunch.

It is not because Billing has one special talent, he is just the extra okirika in a bunch, and might very well be dropped if he is found to be defective, or doesn't fit what the coach wants.

Joebie wey dey talk say Rohr went after him, Rohr also went after Bryan Idowu and Bazee, are they part of the team today?
