larride: Since u say u don't know, no problem then. But just take a look at this screenshot below. Without attaching sentiments, will u take whatever data obtained from the process described in the screenshot serious? Nigeria has a population of over 100 million (that has not been verified to be true or not) , they want to know the unemployment rate amongst the population so they decided to gather data thru a field survey that lasted just 3 weeks and allegedly had a sample size of 800,000 Do u know what percentage of 100million 800k represents? 0.8% which is even less than 1% A certain Dr Yemi Kale and his team Sat down and calculated unemployment rate based on this 800k sample size and use it to represent the whole population and we are supposed to swallow it hook line and sinker because dem Sabi economics and statistics pass. 3 Likes

BlueRayDick: Fixed. Looking at the screenshot, it talks about what they start about how they began collecting data for the unemployment rate. I believe unemployment rate will be gotten from the labor force. Maybe Ibime or Nihilistjnr can shed more light on that. The screenshot was talking about what happened in 2014, a lot of things will have changed and some things improved upon. Data collection is no joke. Almost all data that world bank, IMF or any other body post about Nigeria are majorly sourced from the NBS which means to an acceptable degree, their data are reliable. |

larride: Oga mi, the 800k is their sample which they will use to represent the population. Whatever Labour force figure they want to come up with is in the 800k. That is how sampling works. What I'm saying is doing analysis and basing decisions on a sample of 800k out of over 100m population shows Ur data will not be accurate. By the way IMF, World Bank will not leave their country and organize census in Ur country for u na. Na wetin u give dem in terms kf Ur population dem go take. 3 Likes |

BlueRayDick: UK unemployment rate is measured via a random sample of 100,000 adults so 800,000 in Nigeria is OK as a sample size. What Naija doesn't have is a sense-check mechanism like in the West they also track the no of unemployment benefit claimants. TBH, you cannot argue with any figure produced in Naija because what really defines unemployment? Whilst the average Nigerian girl baking cake and chinchin in her house after NYSC may describe herself as unemployed, one can argue she is self-employed. I am guessing if the statisticians call her as part of the 800k sample and she says she is making chinchin, they will mark her down as employed. There is no profit figure you must hit to class yourself either way. However what I know is that very few Nigerians are gainfully employed. 5 Likes |

BlueRayDick: @ bolded, the pooling sample of 800k was in 2014, it’s definitely not going to be the same sample size they will use for 2019. I don’t think it’s right to claim they are still using the 2014 sample to derive their stat for 2019. IMF and World Bank do partner with relevant agencies to conduct their research especially for planning purposes. That’s why they have their representatives in each member state. |

Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Champions Of Europe 2021 by BlueRayDick: 12:44am On May 22, 2020 |
Ibime: Thank u for this. I find it hard believing whatever figure they churn out because we don't even know the population of the country. The last census was done 14 years ago and it was fraught with controversies that shows the data is inaccurate. We don't have unemployment benefits, so at what point does the government know someone used to work but he's now unemployed? That was why I said those guys just padded figures and dish it out and claim that is the situation on ground when it's far from it. You hardly see 15 people gaining employment out of a class of 100 within the first 1 year of graduation and NYSC. Yet they are talking about a Lower unemployment rate. 1 Like |

BlueRayDick: All unemployment figures are estimates but in the West they will call out büllshit if there is too much variance from welfare claims. I don't think anything can be read into Naija unemployment figures as they are just copy-copy of Oyinbo metrics and there is every incentive to understate unemployment in order to give the market confidence. As you say the overinflated denominator ie population figures already skew those calculations. I'm sure some mumu Oyinbo investors will still look at Naija unemployment figures before investing in Naija as that metric is a key indicator in developed economies. So it would be in Naija interest to keep that number low, and a whole industry would have been built around keeping employment figures low whilst still passing muster with IMF audits. For example, many of those millions of unemployed graduates may be marked as employed if they even make N1000 from a side hustle. What gives a level of confidence in Western employment figures is the welfare payments. Oyinbo man will not hustle for $10 on eBay and consider himself self-employed, when his Govt will probably give him $80 per week unemployment benefits. Whereas in Naija, that $10 eBay hustle will count as employment. 6 Likes |

BlueRayDick: @ bolded, I think this is a wrong choice of word. You cannot claim they didn’t use enough sample test and at the same time claim the figures they release are padded. You can say you think they didn’t have sufficient sample to pool from but categorically saying they are padding figures they release is a bit of an overstretch since you yourself don’t even have any data we can compare it with. If you check our unemployment rate, you will notice they are rising on an annual basis. If you say they are padding the figures, are they padding it to increase the figures yearly? |

larride: Baba I didn't study English or Communication abeg accept the words the way they come. But what I was saying is quite clear. Ibime has buttressed the point by telling us that despite the UK unemployment figures being estimate, the figures are given credibility by Govt tracking number of people claiming under their unemployment insurance. The same cannot be said for Nigeria. People graduate from school and can't make it into paid employment a year and more after NYSC. The government doesn't even have an estimated average of school leaves that join the Labour market yearly and those that eventually get employed within that year. For example Access bank had sacked a lot of contract staff secretly before it trended and CBN asked them to shelve any plan of downsizing. Now while access bank has quickly come out to deny any plans of sacking due to the economic effects of COVID-19 pandemic, they are silent about those already sacked(who are actually much). The government obviously doesn't know those ones are out of jobs now because they don't have any unemployment benefit insurance they will claim on that will make insurance companies, regulators and the Govt in general aware that some people are already out of job. I'm saying this because I've seen unemployment up close and personal. I believe u are in Lagos, when the COVID-19 is over go to ICS limited located at Obanikoro bus stop along ikorodu road on any weekday of Ur choice. Go and see so many graduates besieging their compound waiting to write tests and wait for months to be employed and outsourced to banks as contract staff. The same thing at Workforce in Gbagada. U will be surprised at the amount of Nigerians that are unemployed as opposed to these figures being claimed to represent our unemployment figures. I used to think most of these unemployed people are those that made lower grades...blah...blah....until the day I sat for KPMG test; I was in a hall filled with first class and 2.1 graduates only, yet we were this much.... I don’t even want to talk about some old course mates that got frustrated and resorted to cyber crime. Baba like I said, those figures do not even represent / show a semblance of the reality on ground. The way u are confidently defending these figures ehn, I believe skimpledawg was engaged with an NGO that required them gather data on the field. I’m sure he will tell u a lot of things that was done to those data 12 Likes 3 Shares |

Great discourse devoid of unnecessary bants and name callings. Larride was right when he said Farmers and herdsmen clash did not start in 2015. My NGO applied and got a grant to partner with NIWANO PEACE FOUNDATION to charter peace and conflict resolution in some states in Nigeria. From our office research while applying, we found out these clashes dated way back as 2014 if I remember very well but was not properly documented and under reported. About Data and its authenticity in Nigeria, I only worked in one section (SACA) and cannot vouch for the others. But just to be clear, my then boss was known in the state so as the M/E Officer, I worked directly with the state's M/E Officer and together we sent data reports to Abuja and also go there to defend it. So, I was exposed to alot of data gathered from hundreds of other NGOs in the state. Data isn't a variable to work with in Nigeria to be sincere. It is distorted from time to time. cc; blueraydick 3 Likes |

Skimpledawg: Thank you for this. You made my point. While I was in 100l there's a particular data we talked about and we say it is less than 1% in Nigeria. Throughout my time in the uni we kept on saying that "less than 1%" statement. Nobody knows if it's 0.1% or 0.99%. I've graduated and worked for a while now and the general consensus is still the figure is less than 1% with nobody telling us the exact figure. This was why when Larride said the 2014 may not be valid anymore I had to ask him for the 2019 figure if he has access to it. It's true the Herdsmen vs Farmers clash predates Buhari's ascension to power, but u will agree with me there has been a sharp increase in it ever since became president. I had a friend while serving in the north who happens to be from plateau state. Very articulate young man. He examined how Fulani's when permitted to make raffia huts to settle a bit in Ur comminty will suddenly become intolerant and start communal clashes. This was pre-Buhari Era. But with Buhari's presidency these guys have now become a menace with the presidency always believing the Fulani must have been wronged before they could unleash mayhem on their host community At least some uncomplimentary statements credited to Femi Adesina captures this 4 Likes |
