Nigeria has a population of over 100 million (that has not been verified to be true or not) , they want to know the unemployment rate amongst the population so they decided to gather data thru a field survey that lasted just 3 weeks and allegedly had a sample size of 800,000


Do u know what percentage of 100million 800k represents? 0.8% which is even less than 1%

A certain Dr Yemi Kale and his team Sat down and calculated unemployment rate based on this 800k sample size and use it to represent the whole population and we are supposed to swallow it hook line and sinker because dem Sabi economics and statistics pass.

Looking at the screenshot, it talks about what they start about how they began collecting data for the unemployment rate. I believe unemployment rate will be gotten from the labor force. Maybe Ibime or Nihilistjnr can shed more light on that.


The screenshot was talking about what happened in 2014, a lot of things will have changed and some things improved upon. Data collection is no joke. Almost all data that world bank, IMF or any other body post about Nigeria are majorly sourced from the NBS which means to an acceptable degree, their data are reliable.

TBH, you cannot argue with any figure produced in Naija because what really defines unemployment? Whilst the average Nigerian girl baking cake and chinchin in her house after NYSC may describe herself as unemployed, one can argue she is self-employed. I am guessing if the statisticians call her as part of the 800k sample and she says she is making chinchin, they will mark her down as employed. There is no profit figure you must hit to class yourself either way. However what I know is that very few Nigerians are gainfully employed.

@ bolded, the pooling sample of 800k was in 2014, it’s definitely not going to be the same sample size they will use for 2019. I don’t think it’s right to claim they are still using the 2014 sample to derive their stat for 2019.

IMF and World Bank do partner with relevant agencies to conduct their research especially for planning purposes. That’s why they have their representatives in each member state.

You really need to understand how your country works. The FG is limited in the scope of his powers. The FG cannot force laws on State government. The federal government under Jonathan already signed the FOI bill into law, let those CSO go drag their respective state govenors who has refused to signed the FOI into law in their respective states.

The FG under Buhari signed the whistleblower policy. He sent a special court bill for corruption to the National Assembly which was declined. Instiutionized corruption can only be rooted out with the help of the National Assembly, without that, nothing will happen.

You cannot claim they didn’t use enough sample test and at the same time claim the figures they release are padded. You can say you think they didn’t have sufficient sample to pool from but categorically saying they are padding figures they release is a bit of an overstretch since you yourself don’t even have any data we can compare it with.

If you check our unemployment rate, you will notice they are rising on an annual basis. If you say they are padding the figures, are they padding it to increase the figures yearly?

I have somebody like that in my office. She's a senior colleague that has sympathy for apc and is always optimistic about this current administration. She drops figures like that too, but when I'm in my good mood I start debunking those cooked up figures.

When I remind her of the non-stopping increase in her children's fees since the advent of this administration, how much she fuels her car now, how the car park at marina has increased parking fees from ₦500 to as much as ₦750 daily, how the company's investment income is no longer anything to write home about......etc all in response to how things has deteriorated economic wise. She mostly will just say I should go with my wàhálà and end it all by saying at least there is no stealing/wanton looting going on like we had under Jonathan.

I just shake my head and move on. They keep talking about the GDP growing blah blah blah....Yet u see more and more business men and traders defaulting on loans due to unfavorable economic conditions, FX issues and what have u.

My NGO applied and got a grant to partner with NIWANO PEACE FOUNDATION to charter peace and conflict resolution in some states in Nigeria. From our office research while applying, we found out these clashes dated way back as 2014 if I remember very well but was not properly documented and under reported.

About Data and its authenticity in Nigeria, I only worked in one section (SACA) and cannot vouch for the others. But just to be clear, my then boss was known in the state so as the M/E Officer, I worked directly with the state's M/E Officer and together we sent data reports to Abuja and also go there to defend it. So, I was exposed to alot of data gathered from hundreds of other NGOs in the state.

Data isn't a variable to work with in Nigeria to be sincere. It is distorted from time to time.

Census in Naija is hijacked by local government chairmen and members of house representing the constituency.

My sisters worked as census officials here in Lagos in 2006. We had enough gist of how they were entertained by the LGA chairman and how they were encouraged to bother and stress themselves. Their supervisor already committed to the distortion of data and oh carried them along sharing a paltry part of his largesse with them.

Na Naija we dey
