Predstan:Don’t mind all those nay sayers. So, someone that got a full ride should not take it because one confused man is president. Guys can always go to Canada post graduation. Americans wey no like school and work especially for STEM fields. The US economy is the one that would suffer if the opt/h1b chain is broken. Some guys come here and become residents through marriage, so for them, all bets should be off because of one draft dodger and speculative policies. In case you guys don’t know, this year’s OPT applications are being treated faster than last year’s. 11 Likes |

No! It has never been easier. F1 will likely be the common type of visa the embassy will issue when it resume. I don't see people getting b1/b2 easily unless it is strictly for business purpose and other exceptional case. But when will the embassy open? No one knows! uche06: 1 Like |

I wouldn't call them naysayers. We all don't see things the same way. There are people who chose not to process US admission chiefly because of Trump, and I don't blame them. His policies, views, and administrative direction shakes people differently. And studying abroad is not always about migration. I think OPT will remain intact, but getting a job and being filed for by a potential employer will depend on WHO you are to such organization, the cost of filing for you, and the policies in place. If the unemployment keeps roaring and the pandemic isn't abated before the end of year 2020, you should have a plan B as H1B approval will be very small (Can you provide a link to see where you get the bolded from?). Whatever happens, US may someday become a country that pick up/chase out international students back to their home country (especially with the rate of young Nigerians staying back in the US and engaging in cyber crimes against American people and businesses). But this too will depend on the policies in place and how smart you are. But we have always have exceptions, you know? I'll advice anyone reading this to stand out academically and professionally. That's where the exceptions are. Northeastern: 4 Likes |

I think the US embassy will open in June (I strongly sense this happening). So, if you are going for fall, July and August (with use of extension letter, which I believe will be easily issued to students this time) may be available for interview. Also, I do not see crowd at the embassy when it open. With other visa category put off, 2 months will be adequate to interview all potential F1 students in Nigeria. So, do not sit on the fence and conclude yet that there can't be interview this fall. Prepare yourself... you know not when the matter of the house will return. Prepare 19 Likes 1 Share |

Subsequent to my former post, you can just secure your I-20 ahead (obtain a soft copy for now), start filling your DS-160 bit by bit, prepare your interview transcript--all done under a huge blanket of HOPE. But don't pay the visa fee and SEVIS yet. If your passport has expired, renew it now. Don't put off those prerequisites to the interview, except for payment of sevis and visa fee (GTB won't take visa fee from anyone now self). I have a few students in my DM asking if they should defer. DO NOT defer yet! I advice that you wait till August 10 (based on my calculation) before you defer. By then you'd have known that Fall 2020 is no-no. If you have a GA and your school is among those universities putting all courses online, you may be required to start your program from Nigeria online. I even have information that some GA works will will be conducted from remote locations. University of North Carolina at Charlotte, for example, is trying to conduct some of its Master's programs 100% online. It may be possible to retain your GA role. Will they pay you? To which account? These are some of the questions I have been asked... Well, from experience, nobody knows. But consider the possibility of taking your courses online in case your school go with that. Will you do online course? I know it is not lively and interactive as face-to-face in a four-walled classroom. Well, all the best! 12 Likes |

fairheart: For those with GA/RA/TA positions, bear in mind that you could start your studies remotely, but you will not be able to perform any paid duties because you cant get paid without having social security number, for tax purposes.. And u cant get that SS number if you are not in the US. Just wanted to put this here. 12 Likes |

GTbank is “taking” Visa fee. I know quite a few people that have paid, and I’m paying for mine today too. What I wouldn’t advise anyone to pay is the Sevis fee. fairheart: 1 Like |

urstruly1: You’ve raised some valid points but let me offer another perspective. You can actually perform the role of a TA/GA (depending on what the role is) remotely. I did it. Professors still need graders and office-hours are still conducted online. RA role is tricky if you’re not in the U.S. so I can’t vouch for that. You can get paid without a SSN. Schools can give you something in the form of a Temporary Control Number (TCN) pending the time you receive your SSN. At this point, I would take what my school says as sacrosanct before making a final decision. 3 Likes |

Please ooo, advisers and gurus in the house, kindly advise me on this. I no sabi anything oo. Na beg I dey beg. Let me quicky apprise you on the following. I have been admitted to the following schools for fall 2020: (1) Rowan University ( MS Data Analytics, awaiting GA)- (2)Mercyhurst University (Ms. Data Science)-awaiting GA (3) Bowling Green State University (MS Data Science)- awaiting GA (4) NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY (MS Information Systems) Here is my thinking: (1) Due to this extraordinary time, I want to defer the admissions (2) Due to the paucity of funds, I want to make Northwest Missouri state Uni my final bus stop. since it is cheaper even without funding. But they do award GA second semester and they have on-campus jobs. Please note I have the following pending (a) Grand valley state University (MS Applied Computer Science, Ms. Health informatics (just a trial)). I got a reject for MS Data Science and Analytics (b) Cleveland State University (Ms. Computer information systems, Ms. Software Engineering) (c) Southeast Missouri State University (MNS Mathematics). I NEED YOUR CANDID ADVICE PLSSS. Is there anyone in this schools I have been admitted including Grand Valley State University. |

What of those of us that have SSN but no longer functional US bank account? The story will then be no US bank account for direct deposit. At the end of the day everyone is bleeped. To hell with everything. urstruly1: |

fairheart:Anecdotal information. All the folks that I know with application dates of March 12 or earlier and a start date of June 1st have received their cards in the mail. I know guys with the same timeline that waited till July to get their cards last year . Also, most folks were of the view that the delay of last year was the worst in recent years. 2 Likes |

Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by urstruly1: 5:40pm On May 22, 2020 |
DreManuel: Well, my point is, you cant get paid if you don't have a SSN, whether remotely or not. And I doubt an instructor will get you to officially start working, if you are not physically present on campus yet. You do not have the authorization to do so and that could land him and the Uni in trouble. Yep, good advice and everyone should just adopt a wait and see approach. Hopefully in a month or two, the situation clears up. Even us current students, we don't know what the Fall 2020 semester will be - online or face-to-face. Those enrolled for Summer semester are all being taught online. For Fall, everyone is being advised to wait and see what happens in the next few months. Though some schools already have outrightly taken the decision to go online Fall 2020 and communicated same to their students. There are too many universities in the US and they''ll have different approaches to how they manage the situation. Good luck guys. 3 Likes |

vc1177: If my memory doesn't fail me, the DS-160 form is completed like any other form. I would try to complete the application in one sitting if I can. If I'd do it bit by bit then I'd also ensure that I have my Confirmation Number saved or written somewhere in case the system locks me out due to inactivity. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Read to understand objectively! That is the first step towards understanding others. There's no where I said young Nigerians are not resourceful in the U.S. I said they may be told to return home after studies, and that will largely be because of policies and other factors. You should go back to that post and read again! pompeiimagnus: |

That is not how it works. The DSFORM can be filled within a week, two. It can be in the NIV database for upto 1 year. By bit by bit, I was talking to students who may not have all the information at the moment, but need to start anyway. And since there's uncertainty around embassy resumption, there is no need to fill it all at once when you can take your time. DreManuel: |
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by DreManuel(m): 7:42pm On May 22, 2020 |
vc1177: I have only completed the DS-160 for F-1 twice but only paid the SEVIS fee once, so I will speak for myself. I paid the SEVIS fee before the DS-160. In my opinion, there is no point in filling the DS-160 before paying the SEVIS fee since you can't be interviewed for a Visa without your receipt. DS-160 can be completed under 1 hour. I think it is possible to complete the DS-160 before paying the SEVIS fee as long as you have your SEVIS # on your I-20 because it is required in the form. 1 Like |
