In politics, you are sponsored and your sponsors have an expectation from you. If you play ball, you are fine. If you don't, you run into problems. An example, Senator Victor Oyofo was Senate Chief Whip 2003-2004. Against the wishes of the South-South Senate caucus, he voted against a bill that sought to compel the IOCs to clean up the Niger Delta (note, Victor had worked all his life in ExxonMobil). The South-South Senate caucus thought Victor was not representing their interest and collected signatures to have him removed. Adolphus Wabara read the letter (when Victor had gone to the restroom). Victor was so miffed when he returned that he cursed Wabara that he'd suffer the same fate. Wabara was disgraced a few months after and resigned with his political career dead. Now, I am not saying Victor was sponsored by his company, I am only saying there are entrenched interests in our politics.

Even if Obaseki was to fight Oshiomole, he needed to win his second term first.
