patwilly: I love the answers distinguished mates made in response of your question but I have another slight angle or view to your comments. France and Turkey are just emerging modern day super powers trying to flex their muscles, we can say France was once a dominant force in part of Northern Africa but they can’t try building there bases there now. They can only flex there muscles in some poor Western Africa economies, Ghana is a small country but a better economy without the presence of Western or European military there ? I once heard Ghana and the United States, had a proposal which was controversial due to some concerns (raised primarily by Ghana's National Democratic Congress party) that the agreement would offer undue privileges to the United States, including a particularly controversial section allowing the construction of a United States military base in Ghana. Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo, has denied the agreement includes permission to build a military base in Ghana. The British on the other hand does not have the financial/military capabilities to waste money around building military bases around just any how. And even France are not there to help this countries to fight terrorism 100% but for there own strategic self interest. My conclusion is that France can only flex it’s muscles in this poor African countries like Chad, Mali, Niger etc. 3 Likes |

patwilly:Most of French West Africa are largely weak hence France is still ever present in their almost every aspects; from monetary (CFA) to security. Britain has become insular to their colonies for a long time. That we are of course surrounded by French West Africa is down to us getting divvied up by France-Britain with the latter getting the most strategic WA countries(Nigeria/Ghana). While we are no match militarily for France, I do not think any country would make a mistake to ever challenge Nigeria. Our population alone is a problem no external Government would be willing to destabilise. Nigeria should nevertheless have just the right 'stature' to be able to fend off internal/external threats and not overt arms race of SU34 or submarines to counter a colonial overlord. Our biggest threat remains our massive population which without an economy that can sustain it can become the Biggest threat than French West Africa. 9 Likes

patwilly: France didn't give total independence to the Francophone guys because they fielded bad negotiators during independence negotiations unlike those that negotiated for the Anglophone guys. While the Anglophone guys signed a total declaration of independence, the Francophone guys signed the pactè colónièle agreement under which they conceded their resources to France in exchange for security. You now understand why they have no central banks but XAF & XOF collection points, affiliated to French treasury house. What you call military bases are infrastructure for implementation of that agreement, Anglophones have no such agreement. That doesn't mean Britain didn't have a stranglehold on commonwealth nations in the past, Australia, New Zealand, Gibraltar etc, subsequent intl treaties withered British influence in those regions. Britain has a French type of agreement in Hongkong before 1997. 9 Likes 1 Share |

#PressRelease OPERATION HADARIN DAJI AIR COMPONENT NEUTRALIZES SCORES OF ARMED BANDITS IN MULTIPLE AIR STRIKES CONDUCTED IN KATSINA AND ZAMFARA STATES 1. In continuation of the offensive to rid the North West of the Country of armed bandits and other criminal elements, the Air Component of Operation HADARIN DAJI has neutralized close to 200 armed bandits in multiple air strikes conducted at Ibrahim Mai’Bai’s Camp in Jibia Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State and Kurmin Kura in Zurmi LGA of Zamfara State on 22 and 23 May 2020. The air strikes were executed after series of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions led to the confirmation that the 2 locations were being used as hideouts for some notorious armed bandit leaders whilst also serving as collection points for rustled cattle. 2. Accordingly, Air Component, employing Nigerian Air Force ground attack aircraft and helicopter gunships, engaged the 2 locations in multiple passes, destroying the makeshift structures in the camps as well as killing the bandit leaders and their fighters. Human Intelligence (HUMINT) sources later confirmed that close to 200 armed bandits were killed in the air strikes at the target locations. 3. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), commends the Air Component of Operation HADARIN DAJI for their professionalism and directs them to remain resolute towards eradicating all armed bandits thus achieving directives of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of restoring normalcy in the North West and North Central Zones of the Country. The CAS has also directed that additional assets be deployed to cover Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa and Kogi States to frustrate any attempt of the bandits to relocate to adjoining States. 35 years In Mind…….A Hero Of Our Time.. we’re yet to have such a talented officer. At the time he was arrested on Dec 17th, 1985 and charged for conspiracy to commit treason, Wing Commander Ben Ekele was 36 years old and an Igala from Kogi State, he was a Fighter Pilot and Commander of the Air Defence Group based at the NAF Base Makurdi, a dogged flight pilot Air Force officer in the Nigeria Air Force, best fighter pilot in Nigeria, Africa & third in the world during his time. He began his flying career in 1969 after completion of basic flying training. In 1971 he was deployed to the operational conversion squadron first on the Czech made L-29 Delphin, then the MiG 15, and then on to the MiG 17. He went to the Soviet Union in 1974 for conversion to the MiG 21 (training and fighter versions). From 1976 to 1977 he was sent to the Royal AirForce in Britain where he qualified on the Jet Provost Marks 4 & 5 and also flew the Gnat fighter and Hawker Siddeley Hawk, in addition to attending a weapons employment course. Missile training took place at armament camps in Sardinia, Italy and the west coast of Wales (Abeforth). From September 1977 until December 1980, Ben Ekele set up Nigeria’s first Mig 21 operational conversion unit as the Officer Commanding. Ekele trained practically the entire first generation of locally trained Nigerian MiG 21 pilots. From December 1980 until December 1981 he attended the Joint Services Staff College in Wellington India. When he came back from India he was simultaneously appointed the Staff Officer, Operations Strike Group and the Officer Commanding the Operational Conversion Unit and the Air Defence Unit all based in Makurdi. Then Squadron Leader Ekele was the ground commentator during the fly past of AirForce jets at the 1982 Independence parade in Abuja, while then Major Iyorshe organized the ground parade. After the Buhari coup of Dec 1983, Ekele was promoted and became the Commander of the combined Strike Group (comprising MiG 21s for interception/air defence and the SEPECAT Jaguar for Ground Attack/Strike) and NAF Station Commandant. On November 11, 1984 the Strike Group was split into Strike and Air Defence groups respectively, relieving Ekele of simultaneous control of both groups of aircraft. A new Station Commandant was appointed in the reorganization. Wing Commander Ekele took part in several AirCraft Acquisition Evaluation trips on behalf of Nigeria. In 1978 he was on the team that assessed the French Mirage F-1. In 1980 he was on the team that evaluated the Sia Machetti 260, the Agusta 109 helicopter and the MB339 jet trainer. In September 1984 he went to the USSR to familiarize himself with the new MiG 21B air-superiority fighter which Nigeria had acquired. During that visit he also took part in negotiations with the Russians to purchase more modern bombs for the MiGs. Apparently the Russians had been supplying Nigeria with WW2 stock bombs with large profile – which increased fuel consumption merely for flying during operations. In Nov 1984 he was in the US evaluating the F-20 Tiger Shark. In 1985 he was sent to India to evaluate the HP 34 Hindustan Aeronautic Trainer (Indian version of the Agusta). During the Nigeria-Chad border conflict of 1983 Ekele led a strike aircraft group that straffed islands in the Kinasara area of the Chad basin, in support of the 21st Armoured Brigade to repel the Chadian invasion. He also commanded the AirForce detachment during Operation SeaDog in Calabar – a joint exercise designed to test responses to situations in the Bakassi area. Interestingly Lt. Col. Bitiyong was an observer during that exercise. He was arrested in Benue state Airforce base in Dec 17, 1985 for being part of the plan to overthrow IBB’s Gov’t and was executed alongside 12 other officers in March 5, 1986 by Firing Squad. May his soul continue to rest in peace... 7 Likes 3 Shares

rka2: We showed interest in MIG-29, that's what Toju200 told me, MIG-29 we didn't see. We have not even since the complete 12 units of MI-35m we signed contract for? When will those come in? I don't see Nigeria buying a Russian ship, we have never bought a naval system from Russia. When we are ready, the race will be between a Chinese or European ship. 5 Likes |

Kabe2: That was when the then defence minister, Dan Ali, visited Russia and he said the Mig family was something they were looking at as well as other systems. It is good to shop around, then you get an idea of what best suits your budget. I am confident that something will come out of it as has been happening recently. If it was before, I would have dismissed it, but we can see tangible results already emerging. I brought up the Russian ships because someone posted about Nigeria being interested in Russian corvettes. I know there was a trip not long ago concerning someone visiting a shipyard in Russia and I wondered why at the time. I will see if I can find it. 1 Like |

rka2: I just did some research on the KARAKURT class corvettes. They are so small, essentially missile boats in navies like the US navy. If you're looking at rebuilding your missile ship capability, then the Karakurt would be the best place to start. So, I change my mind, perhaps Nigeria would be really interested in them as they won't really be expensive. They can also carry out coastal surveillance. Your link is dated though, last year. Please post the stuff you have, referring to the bolded statement. 4 Likes |
