I planted it in February but none germinated nzedon2: |
Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by codeQue: 8:21am On May 24, 2020 |
nzedon2: Nursed them in January none grew. However the seeds expiry date was late 2020. So i guessed the seeds are stale. I complained to the distributor, who now has new seeds, he wants to replace my January purchase with new stocks so i can try again. Due to the lock-down i'm yet to receive the seeds. If you are buying them though, check the expiry, if it isn't 2022 upwards, they would be old stock so don't get them. |

@dubem50 why can't you air dry the seed instead of sun drying it. |

Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by codeQue: 6:54am On May 25, 2020 |
nzedon2: Did you get the old seeds or the new seeds? Whichever way, plant them first, they could grow. Seeds seems scarce at the moment. You can try east west seeds, piquante red F1 or Efia (OPV) Super habanero F1 Avenier F1 These are the ones i have planted before. |
Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by Adeoye007(m): 5:28pm On May 25, 2020 |
@ codeque please which company is producing super habanero f1 and what about yield compare to the other one you mentioned |
Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by codeQue: 5:56pm On May 25, 2020 |
Adeoye007: Super Habanero F1 is produced by Nirit, distributed by Dizengoff. Just like every hybrids they have very good yields. In order of yields, ill rate them as Super Habanero F1 by Nirit Avenier F1 by Technisem Piquante Red F1 by East West seeds |

Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by Dubem50: 9:44pm On May 25, 2020 |
Adeoye007:Because it's faster and more efficient, u might be trying to air dry and if not properly cured d very first day, u might wake up the next morning to notice 80% of ur seeds have sprouted ( happened to me with the local variety of cucumber seeds I was try to preserve). And if it's seeds u hope to store for latter use, hmmm. Sorry for you. Dats y I first sun dry den if am gonna store over a long period, I continue with aidrying the next day. |

Chinatown1759:. fertilize well with manure. Not necessarily too much but apply every week or two. Also spray insecticides like imidacloprid, Abamectin, emmamectin benzoate etc. If they proof too stubborn, spray under the leaves. Overhead irrigation (eg sprinklers) or rain also help in reducing their number. Clear surrounding bush.... 1 Like 1 Share |

Dubem50:. Thanks bro. I have always used my bare hand to extract pepper seeds. I don't even feel the burn on my hands. Except I somehow touch other parts of my body. |

sprinkler irrigation is the worst thing for a vegetable farm except maybe ugwu,we tried raingun and hurriedly packed it away, the fastest way to ring dinner bell for foliar disease on cucumbers, pepper, etc is constant wetness of leafs, the best form of irrigation for crops like that is drip or hand watering targeted at the stem, also that seed extraction technique,do you know that 60-70% of pepper disease also infect the fruits and subsequently the seeds,if you extract seeds from a hybrid crop,an old farm that has a 100% chance of been left to diseases that seedling is already doomed before starting, almost all common pepper diseases and viral infections are all found in the seeds from antracnose, bacterial leaf spot to viral mosaic disease(leaf curling),so the best defense against disease starts from the seeds and extracting seeds without proper checks is simply not a good idea, the small advantage in reducing cost will be wiped off by high application of fungicides and subsequent loss to high disease pressure, pls be guided. 1 Like |

Can someone help me identify this challenge in my pepper farm am new in this business
|
Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by okoroemeka(m): 9:53pm On May 28, 2020 |
Donbran101:first I can identify 2 very common pepper diseases already by looking at the pictures, the black coloration on the stem, stalk and leaf margin is classic anthracnose,it also causes fruit to have soft watery spots and spoils easily, the other disease is bacterial leaf spot also easily identified by the yellow spots on the leafs,I have been hit so hard with diseases in vegetables farming that the first mandate in starting any new farm is disease prevention,I don't know the type of seed or variety planted, but all I know is that the farm is doomed, the infection percentage has passed the tipping point and no amount of ordinary fungicides will turn it around, only a special mixture of fungicides and a certain insecticide can salvage the farm, the best defense against problems like this is first good quality seeds, weekly or biweekly application of special fungicides, aviod entering or touching crops in the morning or when wet. 1 Like 1 Share |
Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by FarmTech(m): 10:04pm On May 28, 2020 |
okoroemeka:. Thanks for the info. But I have a different view wrt sprinklers. From my experience, if u irrigate in the morning or afternoon, u won't have to worry about foliar diseases. The plants have to be well spaced too. Even without sprinklers, early morning dews sometimes settle on leaves. When seeds are extracted that way, further treatment will solve all disease problem. One such treatment is the hot water seed treatment for peppers. It requires precise temperature control and timing, so I don't know if many farmers can do it. Another option (I'm not so sure), is soaking the seed in a fungicide solution for some hours. But for me, I just like to hand-extract the seeds and sun dry. But even with this method, further treatment is still recommended. That reminds me. U once complained about rain gun causing erosion in ur farm. I think I know what caused it. If u still have the raingun, unscrew the mouth and look inside. There is a plastic that is normally inside the outlet pipe and it is responsible for breaking up the water into rainlike droplets. Note, I'm not talking about that arm the slaps the water. if the plastic is not there, u will always have erosion problem. 3 Likes 1 Share |

okoroemeka:. Pls can u list some of the special fungicides u use? . I have been hit by the bacteria leaf spot at seedling stage. But with the coming of dry season, it cleared off. If not, it would have been very bad. But I did applied fungicides - mancozeb, hexaconazole, burgundy' mixture and saaf. |
