Hi good day my fellow Nairalander please I will really need your experience about this issue. Please help me read to the end as it is a little bit long. My junior brother is 14 years old and to be sincere I haven’t seen anybody as dull as him. I don’t know if it is natural but I just can’t understand why someone at that age could still be struggling with very simple arithmetic. My brother can’t write 1 – 150 correctly at 14. He seems too dull; note he attends one of the best private school around our area, though I know you might say maybe education is not his way but even if you want to drop out from school you should know some basic things like money, time, multiplication and so on but my brother doesn’t know anything I must say, even to write his name correctly is a problem. It is making everyone unhappy lot of money is being spent on lesson teachers and other things for him still no improvement. I am a student of one of the top federal University in Nigeria same as my other siblings even at both secondary and undergraduate level we were always above average so I can’t say his problem is genetic. I really wants to know what is the problem with him nairalanders. After I finished secondary school I once taught some pupils in primary school though there were dull ones too there but with time I could see improvement unlike my brother i always try to teach him from time to time but it kind of frustrating as he doesn’t even seems like he will ever grab anything and he doesn’t behave like he wants to learn anything. He makes it seems as if he is not interested book or arithmetic at all …we all tried talking to him endless time to always read any time he his less busy but he never does except he is being forced. He rarely talks, he loves to keep to himself always, he doesn’t have interest in anything unlike we the others that are die hard football fans, most times my mom will tell him to even go out to play and mingle he will not still want to go, he prefer to stay at home seating all day without reading or doing anything, even if it is to draw or play football he wont. This matter is not making everyone happy at home we don’t even know the solution to his problem again, as in imagine having a child that is 14 years old that doesn’t know the difference between 17 and 71 it is just so bad….. We don’t know if his case is mental or spiritual. please nairalanders I know there are child experts in the house or anybody who have experienced something like this before what do you think is the problem and possible solutions to the problem your contributions are welcome. Please help me push this pleaseeeeee 85 Likes 8 Shares |

I have no idea what this is, but the part where you said he doesn't know the difference between 17 and 71 got me thinking about dyslexia or dyscalculia. From your narrative, the greater part of his problem points towards arithmetics, so it's more likely to be dyscalculia. It's also possible to have more than one learning disability, so chances are he's suffering from both. People with learning disabilities are not necessarily dull (or unintelligent), it's just that the parts of their brains that are responsible for the performance of generally easy tasks which are difficult to them, are in a state of disorder. I'm a slow learner, but I don't consider myself dull, and that's because I believe every individual needs specific conditions to enable them learn effectively. That boy may be even more intelligent than all of you. He needs to visit a psychologist or learning specialist who understands what it means to have an LD. Stop wasting money on lesson teachers. I got the following from a website and it fits with some of the descriptions you made: Dyscalculia A specific learning disability that affects a person’s ability to understand numbers and learn math facts. Individuals with this type of LD may also have poor comprehension of math symbols, may struggle with memorizing and organizing numbers, have difficulty telling time, or have trouble with counting. https://ldaamerica.org/types-of-learning-disabilities/ 642 Likes 31 Shares |

He has an undiagnosed learning disability. It's funny that your family claims to be concerned, yet, you guys have not taken any concrete step to help him, like going to a hospital. 280 Likes 5 Shares |

ThothHermes:I don't think so. Behaviorally he MAY be on the spectrum but that alone does not account for his stunted academic growth. 19 Likes 5 Shares |

Humanoid01:This is extremely unlikely. Or perhaps you mean Dyscalculia but even that alone does completely fit what the op described. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Very very clear your brother is in the autistic spectrum and may also have a learning disability, maybe dyslexia It's not the poor boy's fault that his brain is wired to see 17 and think it's 71,not his fault that reading appears so overwhelming..the alphabets musy appear scrambled to him & his brain can't cope. Think about it,do you think he would choose not to know the difference between 17&71 by choice? If someone gives you a book and places it upside down, would you be able to read it? The poor boy must have been struggling for so long, his self esteem must be in tatters. You and your family should see a paediatrician or a child psychiatrist or psychologist for a diagnosis then hopefully point you to a specialist that manages kids with learning disabilities You all must be frustrated and i empathise but think of how much your brother is suffering. 426 Likes 14 Shares |

Gundel001:Do you know if your brother has dyslexia or other learning disabilities? Has he been tested for any such? Since you are so smart, why don't you educate yourself on these and test your brother, and help get him the help he needs instead? It is making everyone unhappy lot of money is being spent on lesson teachers and other things for him still no improvement.? Really? Have you considered how the boy feels about not grasping even some of the simplest of things? Put yourself in his shoes, and stop thinking it is all about you and everyone else. Help your brother in every way you can. 142 Likes 4 Shares |

Gundel001: Your brother is likely suffering from dyslexia since he has problems differentiating between numerics like 17 & 71 as u claim.Autism isn't the problem as some people claim here, infact, autism should make smarter. I d advise u see a specialist 14 Likes 1 Share |

In other words, your brother cannot form zero with the shape of the bottom of a bottle... If Yoruba tells "kole fi idigo ko 0" just know that you are finished.. 5 Likes 4 Shares |

It is not spiritual, your younger is dealing with learning disabilities and from your write up I have picked up dyslexia, dyscalculia which falls under neurobiological disorder. There is need to take him to go see a Neuropsychologist for a diagnosis and treatment plan which would include an IEP (Individualized Education Program) where he needs to be enrolled in a special school. I encourage you to go online to research on these learning disabilities and you will gain insight and better empathize with your brother as the way he has been handled has really dented his self-esteem. 56 Likes 2 Shares |

I deeply empathise with your brother for being from a cruel family like yours. For God's sake that child has learning disabilities which should be obvious to any slowpoke not to talk of so-called university graduates. How do you expect him to play with his mates when you've all destroyed his self-esteem and made him feel insecure. You all better rush him to a psychologist and child therapist asap, you've dallied too long already. 112 Likes 4 Shares |

Instead of your family to be wasting money on lesson teachers, has anyone ever considered taking him to a child psychologist? Have you guys even considered how he feels, being looked down on as the dullard in the family? A family of graduates and undergraduates, yet no one has thought of taking him to see a professional. Anyway, you mentioned he doesn't know the difference between 17 and 71, it's most likely dyslexia. Then again like others have said, it can also be dyscalculia or he's in the autism spectrum. The only true way to know is for him to see a professional. 28 Likes |

Sadly he needs to be taken to a teaching hospital for proper diagnosis. He is not dull he just has a challenge which looks like autism or dyslexia, with the right help he will learn to cope and thrive. Read on these two then educate your family to stop abusing or flogging him, be needs help to cope not mockery and pain 23 Likes |

As others have already stated, I think he might have a learning disability. Take him to a good hospital to be tested and also you guys need to be patient with him. 1 Like 3 Shares |

Mindlog: Mental retrdation definitely means an IQ below 70. Learning disabilities can be ish like dylexia, dyscalculia, etc., which do not necessarily mean low intelligence. 4 Likes |

Squillaci: Not talking about definitions, just letting you know that you can't use "mental ret@rdation" in mental health circles as it is now deemed inappropriate and offensive. It has been replaced with intellectual disability, at least that is my field. 56 Likes 2 Shares |
