A lot of people don’t really know much about ADHD and even when they know, they don’t ever take it seriously. ADHD (attention deficit/ hyperactive disorder) is also divided into two part, the attention deficit and the hyperactive part, mine is the attention deficit part, most people just call the attention deficit part ADD (attention deficit disorder).

I have always felt I wasn’t as smart as the average child, I used to fail a lot in primary school. My mum did everything, got a lesson teacher and still, I was failing, there was this time where my lesson teach brought the script they were supposed to set in my school back then, and he taught me all the answers and I still failed that semester. I fail all other subjects except cultural and creative art, the lady had a way of making the lesson fun, and we always had project where we would make clay houses and animals. That was fun, unlike math where the teacher would write a bunch of big numbers and do something, then BOOM, answer! Or music class, where the man would make us draw some sofa notation and force us to buy flutes.

I left primary school, went to junior secondary school and like primary school, I was an outcast. First, I wasn’t really the social type, I mean as children we learn to tell the truth, right? But then I got to secondary school, and I found out that telling the truth hurts peoples feelings. It took me sometime to understand how to tell people what they want to hear to keep being friends with them.

I had to teach myself how to read for my exams, I had to make reading for my exams interesting to help me understand what I was reading. My peers would just read and it’s in their head, but with me it was different. It is not that I’m was not sharp, it goes like this, I would pick up my book and when I remember the magic the teacher performed, I loose interest completely, but on the other hand, if the class was interesting and teacher made it captivating, I would only need to skim through my book and I would pass with a distinction.

By the time I got to science class, I had already taught myself maths and basic science, I loved science but all my teachers back then made it seem like science was just about numbers, big words and calculations. I can remember the time I learned the first 20 elements with a song, and I think it’s safe to say that I’m never forgetting the first 20 elements.

I was in senior school, I would be in the middle of a boring class and thoughts would fill my head, before I knew it, the class would ended, I would find out that I didn’t write anything or hear anything. These episodes became more frequent and I didn’t know if I never noticed them, and soon I would start to notice that during conversations, I would go into on of my thinking sessions and I would be jolted back to reality with the sound of my name, or I would say something only

Sorry, I think they stop me from making it too long (probably thought it was spam).

Only to find out that the other person was talking and I interrupted.

When my girlfriend told me I might have ADHD, I was in my first year, she said I behaved like someone she knew that had ADHD, at the time, I know what ADHD stood for, but other than that i didn’t know anything else about it. When she said it, I brushed it off as just nothing, we came across a video on YouTube, this Asian guy that has ADHD said did a funny video on how to know you have ADHD (your phone listens to you, trying saying ADHD before typing it on google, I bet when you type “a” you’ll see ADHD), it was very similar to what I experienced but it was over exaggerated and I took it as a joke. This lady had to look up the symptoms and show me, she pointed out how I show each one of those symptoms.

I finally agreed, I’ve been trying to get a proper diagnosis and hopefully get medication, it can be managed.

I told my mum, she didn’t take it seriously. She always complains that I’m absent minded, she said I’m not responsible, I’m the dumbest person she has ever seen and all that. I can never forget what she told my school’s guidance and counselor lady. I wanted to be a science student cause I still love science, I loved watching science documentaries, so science was what I wanted. So there I was filling out the questionnaire on things you like to see what class you’ll be in and my mum told the lady that if I fail first term, they should remove me and she know I’m too dull for science class.

I passed waec with 5 b’s and 4 c’s not because I wanted to prove her wrong, but because I didn’t want to stay an extra year at home.

I don’t want to make this long, if you have any questions, I’ll answer them.

I have a part time job, I manage a website for this small company coming up in plateau state. It affects my job somewhat, I have an idea to post something that seemed very good at first, then suddenly it becomes boring no matter how unique I make it, I always seem to think it will bore people. Haven’t posted in a while though.

Well I’m in 300 level and with the way Nigerian universities are, I struggle with my school work. My jobs is kinda better cause I manage a website that deals with music, I love music.

I don’t read novels anymore because it take me ages to finish it, I could be read, hear the voice in my head, but then, all of a sudden I’m lost and I don’t know how I got to that page I’m currently on. I would have to go back five or four pages to see where I remember I stopped, this also happens with my school work. That’s how I struggle.

I play basketball and I’m very good, but sometimes I catch myself lost in the middle of the game, this happens if my team mates don’t pass to me or if my teammates aren’t playing with energy or zeal to win, I’ll just drift off in my own thoughts and be useless in that particular game.

I don’t notice little deals, like if my girlfriend changes her hair or her nails, she has to change something pronounced like her clothes or skin tone before I notice (not say she changed her skin tone)

Please don’t panic, first is be sure. They have this online site for self diagnosis, you fill out a questionnaire and they’ll tell you what you might have, or if you really have ADHD, mine came out positive for ADHD every time I did it. If you want to be very sure though, visit a professional

They have ADHD medications that help you focus for some hours, that means you’d have to keep taking them all your life, but I don’t think I can afford them yet.

All my life I thought everyone was just had these things I was experiencing.

The Nigerian education system doesn’t help matters at all.

It becomes worst if you think too negative and drown yourself in anxiety, all you’re going to be thinking about is how life isn’t fair, just try to think happy thoughts, think of one or two funny moments, laugh to yourself. But don’t ever block out the ones you love.

I got try to catching myself and bringing myself back, but I still often miss out on discussions and lectures. Train yourself to catch yourself drifting away in thought, then come back and listen.

I don’t think it’s ADHD, try doing the questionnaire online, just search ADHD test, you should know if you have actually have ADHD or something similar. There still hope man

That's cool. Honestly i can relate to always having second thoughts about things, most especially downplaying them beacuse I'm a pessimist, as much as I'd hate to admit that. It's funny you thought people would get bored with your post. It almost looked like you projected your own fear towards them, you did say you get bored easily didn't you?

I'd like to ask though, are you a procrastinator? If so, is it chronic?

I procrastinate a lot, I have a very good memory, when I’m lost in my thoughts I tend to forget what I planned to do, by the time the memory of my obligations come to mind, it’s too late or I’m not in that vicinity. And so I say I’ll do it the next day, but the circles continues for a while before I force remember it at the appropriate time. Even as I write this, there are things getting my attention away from my phone for some seconds, I’m a optimist by the way.

The main reason I feel my work isn’t good enough is, when I what post something, another even better topic pops up in my mind, compared to the one is was about to post or the ones I have already posted, the idea seems far better, and I wonder why I didn’t post the one in my head instead

Man, i "zone out" like crazy. Maintaining absolute concentration isn't something i can do intentionally. Especially when the task is something that requires conscious attention, and aslo requires me to think continuously. It's almost like my mind needs to take a break from time to time, so i just zone out to some other interesting thought

Although if i may say, i tend to be able to concentrate fully at long stretches if it's a passive activity. Let's say something like, if i were reading a very interesting article online, or playing PES.

I can relate to the procrastination part too, that's usually how it is. Thought i was to only one who tended to forget things at the vital time. I often forget to properly articulate my views during an argument. Only to remember what i should've said when I'm not in that vicinity anymore. Honestly I've just had to accept that aspect of me grin

So, I'd like to ask. Learning a computer based skill such as yours is no easy feat, especially for one who struggles to concentrate. How did you do it man? Honestly I tried to dabble into programming, ended up quiting beacuse i just lost steam. Could hardly concentrate anymore

I have love for programming that’s why, I learnt a little python and C++ and tried to make a bot called my friend, but then I got bored because I couldn’t think of much things for the bot to say, I would have learnt fully but time doesn’t permit me, I’m a biochemistry and we don’t really have anything to with code, I’ve stopped learning. I would love the opportunity though

Your first sentence was the perfect answer. It's a shame that boredom still crept in. For me it's almost inevitable at some point, i can feel it creeping in most times. And once it fully settles, there's really not much i could do than a "break". Well, i hope you can get back to what you love someday smiley

Thanks man, I feel better now, even though my family won’t understand, at least some people do.

My girlfriend is really trying, we’ve been dating for a year plus now and I think she’s used to it now.
