George Floyd's Murder: What Northern Nigerians Must Learn From It

"My stomach hurts, my neck hurts, everything hurts, everything hurts, some water or something. Please please! I can't breath officer! They're gonna kill me!" George Floyd cried while the police officer pinned his neck down with his knee for 10minutes before finally going lifeless.

The incident which occurred in Minnesota, Minneapolis was filmed by bystanders with their phones. They pleaded with the police officer to let go off George Floyd but to no avail. A voice was heard on the background pleading with the Chinese backup officer, Tou Thao not to allow his colleague kill Floyd but he just stood there telling them to back off and stop recording.

The cold murder of George Floyd in broad day light was justified by his killer(s) on the grounds that he resisted arrest for forgery but footages later released revealed the contrary. The F.B.I has opened an investigation as directed by the U.S president Donald J. Trump.
The four police men involved have been dismissed by the police force and Derek Chauvin, the officer who killed Floyd was later taken into custody and charged with 3rd-degree man slaughter.

The incident has further triggered mass condemnation and protests in Minneapolis which led to looting and destruction of properties. This is the latest killing out of the long list of lynchings of unarmed African Americans by the police. in a similar case, an unarmed black teenager, called Ahmaud Arbery was killed in March while Breonna Taylor a black woman was killed in her home in Louisville, Kentucky.

In contrast to the riotous events following the systemic and injudicious killings of unarmed black citizens across the United States, I'd like to relate it to events in Northern Nigeria especially Kaduna State. In my life time I've witnessed the several riots in Kaduna state starting from the year 2000 where people very close to me lost their lives (family members, friends and neighbours). Some of these events happened right before my eyes (in my own community) and I even narrowly escaped being kill twice.

Last night, I saw a maraud crowds of people of DIFFERENT RACES (nigroids, Caucasoids, Hispanics etc) on the news protesting the hideous murder of George Floyd and others by the same police force who were supposed to protect them. These people protested peacefully which later erupted into violence against racism, arm in arm without attacking each other.

The peaceful protests by disgruntled African American citizens who where joined by other citizens of other races to seek justice for George Floyd taught us all Nigerians a lesson.
- The black community didn't attack or kill any white person as a reprisal attack for what a white police man did to an unarmed black man.

- Some of the white residents didn't seat back and watch the blacks protest despite the seeming "White Privilege" they enjoy, many of them voiced out their frustration and also came out to support the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

- They all came out in one accord to fight a "Common Enemy" without turning against each other, unlike what happens here whenever we have issues. This is as a result of religious and ethnic intolerance.

- They didn't block border towns and highways and start killing innocent white citizens

- Trigger happy law enforcement authorities have killed our citizens in cold blood. Rinji, a young man was recently allegedly killed by some military men in Jos, Plateau state. Have we aired our view about it?
Kajuru killings hasn't stopped. Are you still quiet because you are not Adara? Okay let's not get emotional.

- There is power in unity � the resultant effects of our actions and inactions will either bless or mar generations yet unborn.

WE AS NIGERIANS especially NORTHERN NIGERIANS WE *MUST CAREFULLY LOOK AT THE MINNESOTA EVENT AND LEARN LESSONS FROM IT.

While our melanin coated brothers and sisters are being killed and systematically discriminated on in the diaspora, we back home in Africa must refrain and resist from killing each other. There is nothing unity can't achieve..

Humanity first before race, religion, ethnicity or whatever we individually have affinity for.

God created us all didn't he?
The God I serve is not a killer!

U have spoken well, but what Nigerians and Africans understand better is violent. They derive joy in it. Take a look at boko boys and their brutality. The killer fulani herdsmen aren't left out plus the latest bandits. Yet no single protest. We are weak in this country. We smile while we suffer. So pathetic!

I agree with you that people shouldn't be attacked based on sharing the skin colour/tribe/religious faith with a few wrongdoers but DON'T MAKE IT A NORTHERN MATTER!

1- We all recall not far back before dilector went into exile how they were searching for northerners in eastern states streets because of an altercation caused by northerner attacking someone! Wht have you got to say to that?

Abeg make una desist from giving advice to people who are not from ur ethnic group.
