Can you share information on the GCMS.? Opemipo21: |
Re: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by Opemipo21: 11:05pm On May 25, 2020 |
hayqinsbFX: The GCMS note literally would tell you all the work that has been done on your application step by step. It will also inform you of any notes or recommendations that the Visa officer have made on your application. In my own situation, I was able to detect that it was after the email I sent that they started working on the application and that hey are actively working on the application. In my case it took 20 days to get the note after I requested for them. 1 Like |

I got a response from cic that my spouse application will be put on hold due to measures put in place to stop the spread of Covid 19. I guess my application is not considered for processing because It’s really not long enough that I submitted my application |
Re: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by Opemipo21: 1:30pm On May 26, 2020 |
Mrtoke: Sorry to hear that. When did you submit your application? |
Re: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by Mrtoke: 6:35pm On May 26, 2020 |
Opemipo21:I applied on 2nd of April |
Re: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by Opemipo21: 6:38pm On May 26, 2020 |
lennyk: You can apply if your wife is a student. All in all, am guessing applications submitted on/after April 9 are not being processed but I might be wrong. 1 Like |

Yes she is currently a student. Thank you for your response. I believe they are still attending to applications but they are currently not issuing visas till June 6th. (As announced) Opemipo21: |

Please refer to the link below as it list the conditions for what is considered an essential travel. If you meet one of the conditions, you can raise a CSE to get your application processed during this period and actually get a response without having any problems at the port of entry. https://www.cicnews.com/2020/05/how-cbsa-determines-essential-travel-revealed-in-internal-memo-0514463.html?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter-20200528#gs.6x3jzr |

Opemipo21:Cool , thanks for sharing. You clearly fall in the essential category because you have a kid and your job is essential. I work in IT but I don’t have a kid , I guessed that’s why they make a decision that they’ll place my application on hold but it’s arguable because my job is categorized as essential |

Good morning house, please I have a question, I got married in Nov 2019 and I have a visitor visa till May 2021. He has a PR and we submitted a PR application in April. We just heard about the open work permit and we were wondering if it is possible to submit an open work permit pending the approval of the PR. I intend to join him fully in October. |

Mysine: Since you have a visitor visa, go to Canada and apply for a work permit when you get there. You will get it much faster that way. 1 Like |

Since you have a visitor visa, go to Canada and apply for a work permit when you get there. You will get it much faster that way. @Culkid @Mysine Submitting a work permit application inside Canada as a visitor does not make the process faster. As a visitor, you still have to use the form “ application for work permit made outside Canada “ the application would be sent to lagos for processing & if approved, you would be required to exit Canada to activate the work permit at the border. Basically, it’s the same process as applying from Nigeria |
Re: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by iwinosajack: 11:13pm On Jun 01, 2020 |
Mysine: @Mysine It’s better you wait for the approval of your pr application. Ircc rarely approves TRV applications (visitor’s visas, work permits) for spouses of Canadians or PR holders. I guess you got your visitor visa before you got married to a pr holder |
Re: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by Mysine: 8:08am On Jun 02, 2020 |
iwinosajack: Oh ok. Yes, I had my visitor visa before we got married. Thank you so much. |

iwinosajack: Ok, thank you so much. A quick question please: if I get my PR whilst in Canada as a visitor, will I be required to still go out and activate it at the border? Will I also require a US Visa to do that ? 1 Like |

Hello, I would like to ask if the embassy at Lagos is still allowing applicants to come for biometrics at this time. I want to submit my hubby’s application online but I don’t know if they are allowing people to come for biometrics due to covid. Your response would be appreciated Thank you |
Re: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by iwinosajack: 6:37pm On Jun 02, 2020 |
Mysine: If your passport & copr are sent to you in Canada, you would be required to book appointment at ircc office for landing. Alternatively, you can do flagpoling at the border if you cant wait for an appointment. Just go to any Canada/USA border, tell US immigration that you want to flagpole, they would put a flagpole stamp on ur passport & send you back to Canada, you don’t need a US visa for this. If you applied from Nigeria, your ppr would most likely come via Ghana visa office. In that case, you would have to be in Nigeria. |

Neephemy: Check VFS website for info. I doubt they would open their doors to the public if the lockdown is still in effect in Lagos 1 Like 1 Share |

Mysine: Hello, you don’t require a US Visa. When you get to the US border, just inform them you are flagpoling. They won’t allow you into the US, they would just let you do a U-turn back into Canada. |

Opemipo21:Same with mine, just wondering why medical isn’t updated for the past four weeks they’ve been reviewing my file because I had an upfront medical. Did you have your medical updated yet? |
Re: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by Opemipo21: 7:02pm On Jun 23, 2020 |
Mrtoke: When did that change for you? My medical has been updated as passed since February 19, 2020. |
Re: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by Mrtoke: 9:05pm On Jun 23, 2020 |
Opemipo21:My file review of eligibility started on 28th of May but my medical is still showing you do not need medical. We will send you a message if this changes. I’m just curious that’s why I’m reaching out to know what’s up. Edit: we submitted upfront medical alongside our application |
