We don’t realy have the necessary facility for all this bro is this not our country Nigeria
You can’t compare Nigeria with USA
My brother don’t you watch investigation discovery. Do you think Nigeria can have all this on ground we are not advance to that level bro
kindredspirit:

Finger prints have nothing to do with DNA.

Nigeria has finger prints database (s) aross several platforms including, but not limited to, BVN, SIM Reg, NIMC etc.

The Police also has a forensics department and do work with private labs to crack cases, especially high profile ones.

With the right motivation and pressure, the Nigerian Police and security agencies, do draw from these resources to apprehend criminals speedily. You would be surprised at how efficient they can be if they are REALLY interested in a case. Unfortunate that they mostly need to get marching orders ( and inducement ) before going all out to achieve results.

I am surprised that this question is coming up. You dont know BVN and even your SIM registration is harnessed into different data basis available to authorities on request. There is a lot of interest in this case so I am not surprised. May the wickedness of the wicked never go unpunished...

I have reasons to doubt because every police clearance report I got from Police criminal registry was a charade. Also, you remember that one of the reasons the U.S banned us was over this same issue. lots of data are collected but they aren't harmonized and sometimes they are not maintained at all. It is no secret that when you apply for passport renewal, you'd find that the high commission would require you to recapture rather than just pulling up your prints. It is also worthy to note that fingerprint search is far more complex than searching a name and is nothing like what is portrayed in movies.

I really do hope the police caught the culprits but considering all these and knowing Nigerian police and their antecedents, I take their claim with a pinch of salt.

This is the most reasonable explanation I have seen so far. Other people just assume they can just scan through the prints from BVN, Sim reg, NIMC etc without a primary key or a complex system like Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System(IAEFS).The data from BVN and it's likes isnt harmonized.

Why do Nigeria police like saying things that will cast doubts. There are no fingerprint database in Nigeria and they are too illiterate to understand how to trace criminals using fingerprints.

They would just say they have apprehended a suspect instead of this fingerprint bullshit they are saying.

shows that they must have arrested the wrong person.

Nigeria Police are just a joke.

It is easy to assume they can just scan through the millions of prints from BVN, Sim reg, NIMC etc However, the truth is that without a primary key or a complex system like Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System(IAEFS) you can't. Also, the data from BVN and it's likes isnt harmonized, so it is very unlikely they examined it against a database like BVN. Fingerprint search is not as simple as movies like to portray it (just like hacking isn't as easy as movies make it seem).

Someone said they probably had a suspect and compared the prints to his. I think that is the most probable thing that happened

My only prayer is, they should not arrest out of pressure that is being mounted on them. I pray it should not be an innocent person.
I pray the perpetrators should be arrested.

Fingerprint cross referencing dey easy nah..
National id card requires fingerprint during registration
Linking of bank account with BVN requires fingerprint when registering.
To own a mobile line sef u go do fingerprinting..

It is easy to cross check with all this database..
Dem no suppose loud am, all this evil people now go dey ghost their act coz majority no know sey naija get fingerprint database..

But no problem sha, if you think u sabi do bad thing and go scot free, continue, a day dey come wey nobody go come free ur scot when dem gbab u...

about the bolded, for real? I'd be surprised because last I knew we were yet to harmonize our data, hence why we always need to recapture for voter's registration, driver's license, passport renewal etc

Besides, it is easy to assume they can just search through the millions of prints from BVN, Sim reg, NIMC etc However, the truth is that without a primary key or a complex system like Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System(IAEFS) you can't. If there's a finger print on the fire extinguisher which matches with whatever suspect they have... It will almost be conclusive.
They don't need to run through any data system.

Fingerprint well could be used provided the suspect in on your database, I don't think so.. we'll all be surprised that the killer is someone known to the victim.. police may have worked on that

Firstly all databases has a primary key except you mean something else.
Even if we are to assume this data has not been harmonised. I promise you they can search against each of the databases individually. There is nothing "complex" about IAFIS. the only limitation is the processing power to run against a large dataset. The INEC verification at a polling boot uses a handheld machine to search against <500people

Each of this system can run AFIS the only difference is the data set you are running against. e.g INEC used it to eliminate duplicate registration. but this was run only LGA-wide.

Have you seen NIMC infrastructure? or CBN infrastructure?
